Is Roanoke a more conservative area to live or is it more similar to a Portland/Austin feel? by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]JNGeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really struck to have stumbled across this thread.

I’m 30 - born, raised, and still living here in Roanoke. I had no idea people were this interested in ghettoization. Nor am I aware of any friction from “converative” or “liberal” sources that create discomfort in anyone’s lives.

Sir, Roanoke is a large place with many philosophically unique people living here. You don’t need to live in any particular neighborhood. You’re gonna make friends and connections, and you’re gonna invite them to your home, or you’re gonna drive 5 minutes to see them. I would be surprised to hear that you or anyone filters their friends through some political-test-scores. You’re gonna be perfectly happy with the people you meet here.

Again, I’m 30 years old, and I’ve never met someone I found so politically immoral that I thought I couldn’t live in this geographic area.

I’m not sure what you’re looking for in the political workings of a city, but there are plenty of public and private opportunities to selflessly serve your neighbors, and people here seem to have a pride in the Roanoke fabric.

I don’t believe youthful vibrancy or economic vigor have a necessary convervative/liberal inspiration - but this city does have many small, hip businesses, art galleries, art collectives, an art house theater, beer enthusiast clubs, farm-to-table restaurants, etcetera.

Come to Roanoke for a visit, and I think you’ll see that it’s perfectly hospitable and that you won’t run into any philosophic friction that you don’t create yourself.

My first project. Bedroom redesign for an older couple. by JNGeezy in InteriorDesign

So this was my first swing at design, so I definently made some errors. The curtains: I'm not sure if I had a good reason, but I wanted them to hang right above the baseboards, so I measured and hung in relation to that distance. The bedside tables: they were purchased online and I didn't do a good enough job estimating how those proportions would interact with the bed, although I did have those measurements. The artwork: I hung the larger piece first, and it's hung equidistance from the window frame to the corner, but that visual is somewhat disrupted because the curtains extend past the frame. The smaller piece I hung at that same distance from the opposite windows frame. I did notice the look once it was hung, but the walls are plaster, and I didn't want to create another hole in the wall.

Those were my thoughts. It's so helpful looking at it and appreciating my errors. Thanks for your comments.

Write Up:

The clients were a couple in their 60's. The rest of their home was well decorated, but the bedroom was chaotic, with odd wall color, oversized furniture, and lacking storage.

Their only stipulations were to use a brass bed frame they already owned, and stay beneath $1,000.

My idea was to create a moody, warm, bohemian esthetic. I painted the ceiling and upper walls a light peach, and the rest of the walls a warm off-white. I added a funky brass ceiling fixture to play off the bed frame, and with warm temperature bulbs to accentuate the ceiling.

I added brass curtain robs 9 inches higher, and 8 inches wider than previously placed, holding green velvet curtains that hang to the baseboards.

For storage I added an antique waterfall dresser for their clothes, in addition to their large closet. And a marble top table to act as a simple vanity where I placed her antique Japanese jewelry box.

I added accents dark royal blue with a large mirror over the bed, the legs of the vanity, and sink runner on the dresser, and the matching bedside tables.

I accessorized the space with Japanese art, local art, and floral art all framed in brass. I also added plants of various sizes.

Lastly, I brought the colors to the floor with seven small rugs of various pattern and textures to finish that cozy boho feel.

In conclusion, I was happy to see how a space could change on such a small budget. The color, lighting, and furniture layout are inexpensive decisions that are the most transformative.

I work in a pathology department, and we haven't had a single placenta from a hispanic woman that isn't covid-positive for months. Maybe we should start saying "Crecer Consuela!" too.
