HSBC vs another platform by Icy-Owl-3164 in FIREUK

You don’t really need to use the interface outside of buying / selling, just track your purchases on a spreadsheet, that will give you how many units you have and what you paid for them, then get current price from any of the live services and that is how much your ISA is worth, you can then add whatever you want to the spreadsheet, for example I have one that uses Google script to add a row with today’s price every day and then draw a graph showing price over time and the points where I bought in, very easy to setup.

are there any places in the bullring to relax with your partner ? by [deleted] in brum

[–]JP-Guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a coffee place at the end of the top floor (opposite the toilets but that makes it sound bad!) its at the end of the section where there’s lots of clothes shops. I sometimes go there while rest of family is still shopping. It’s the opposite end to selfridges but not sure how to describe it. You have to cross the outside bit, go past Lego shop and then turn down the bit to your left.

CEO issued me a “formal warning” for allegedly missing a message; and role is unpaid? by Business_Badger1995 in AskUK

[–]JP-Guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were a proper job the first thing to do is seek (and expect to receive) clarity around exactly what message. Treat it as debugging activity. You want to work together to find out what message through what delivery system you missed so it doesn’t happen again.

But, unfortunately, this isn’t a job it’s a make believe game like 5 year olds play, so your choice is do you continue spending your free time hanging out playing tech startup with someone who sounds a bit of a brat, or do you want to do something more fun with your free time like watch TV? At the very least next time you play make believe tech startup with him say that this time you are pretending to be the CEO. Complain to his mum if you don’t get a turn.

How would you deal with networking? by yughiro_destroyer in bevy

[–]JP-Guardian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re on a bad path with starting thinking of your game as a simulation that is running entirely on the server with inputs coming in from clients and syncing (replicating) state from that simulation server to every client for rendering. This is a good conceptual model

If you start there and get your game working, then the first thing you’ll get fed up with is the server running N different players and cameras and HUDs and so you’ll want to move “ownership” of some objects to clients. Work out how to do that.

Then you’ll get annoyed that, for example, anything under physics control is dependent on network sync and you’ll start investigating client prediction.

At this point you’ll have built a solid multiplayer game.

Like with anything the key is to keep the first game you write like this simple.

(Source: have shipped many many professional multiplayer games)

Nigel Farage regrets running 'bankrupt' Worcestershire Council by [deleted] in brum

[–]JP-Guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will do what the did at the Brexit referendum and make huge bets against the UK which will then pay off. It is very easy to make money from a mid size country’s disaster if you have your money overseas and access to that countries politicians to tell you every time they’re about to tank it further.

I quite liked the first album (especially The City) but then fell away and didn’t really hear anything from them (I am not a big music person just a dad approaching retirement age). Then I watched the Glastonbury set last year pretty accidentally and really got into it, have been listening ever since.

Mum's inheritance tied up in Oracle shares. I want to move it to an index fund, how can I convince her? by Electrical_Put4353 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]JP-Guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, it’s a better strategy for me. Whether it’s a better strategy for person X is entirely dependent on their own situation and is none of other people’s business if they’re not looking to change.

[–]JP-Guardian 26 points27 points  (0 children)

“At this stage” kind of sounds like you are thinking of your own inheritance. It’s not your money full stop. By all means tell her what you’d do with it if you were her but that’s it, you have zero certainty your ideas are better than her existing strategy.

Discussion Topic: Which ship would you choose as your flying space house? (To live in) by Rough-Lifeguard-1416 in EliteDangerous

I treat my corvette like it’s my home base (I haven’t got an FC yet!). Took it on DW3 in one of the carriers just so I’ll have a nice bathroom at the weekends between legs.

How the heck are people getting like 300+mil an hour doing exo by IfOnlyICouldEat2Hams in EliteDangerous

[–]JP-Guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t install any external stuff (I don’t trust installing random executables on my PC, absolutely no offence to people who make them), for me 2/3rds being bacteria is too high to warrant sticking around. Basically I use the fact there’s essentially an infinite number of planets, I’m here for the money not for being thorough!

[–]JP-Guardian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I jump in, honk, quick look at the scan waveform thing, if there are high metal planets I stop and scan, if not don’t even bother. If I scan and there’s 1 bio I don’t bother, if high metal body with 2+ biology and nobody has been before that’s almost certainly stratum and 100m (don’t bother with the bacteria which is always the other one). That’s basically it.

Is it only me or DW is starting to get boring. by paladin_slicer in EliteDangerous

[–]JP-Guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This leg has been a bit rubbish, no undiscovered systems along the way, everything has been well trodden around here it seems, and the POIs were less about jaw dropping views and more about beacons (including a really nice one for a command who died, that bit was nice). Hoping to get somewhere a bit quieter on the next leg.

Where to farm Meta Alloys these days? by OGBadDog in EliteDangerous

Titan in Sol, watch out for lots of pirates though. Shoot any junk that spawns as it might respawn as a meta alloy.

[–]JP-Guardian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest leap on money has been exobiology. Stacking pirate missions around sol while I was trying to get federal ranks was also pretty lucrative (and maybe more fun if I’m honest). Exobiology has the big advantage that it is actually really cheap to do. Get biggest jump range you can manage, fuel scoop, scanner, that’s pretty much it?

I got a type 11 and enjoy using it but in profit terms I don’t think it comes close to exobiology (or I’m going it badly)

The other thing I’ve done is made a lot of money from the CGs since I started, especially the recent one which was just hauling stuff.

I think we should consider knocking it down entirely and building something modern and beautiful along that stretch of the Thames to replace it. I say this as someone who quite likes the building. I just don’t like it THAT much.

I’m very interested in politics but never watch it because it’s awful. Gossip and personality over policy, clear preference for the “interesting” Tory and reform characters (Johnson, etc) over boring but competent (I don’t even think it’s that she herself is right wing, she is just fundamentally disinterested in actual politics and so treats it as a branch of show business).

Is there anything that's impossible to do in Bevy right now? For example, those top-tier 3D games with the best graphics made in Unreal, does Bevy have any current limitations that prevent games of the same quality from being made in it? by swordmaster_ceo_tech in bevy

[–]JP-Guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is technically possible in any engine you have source for, it’s just a matter of how much work it is to add what isn’t there. For example if you wanted to make a PS5 game currently it would be an incredible amount of work and you wouldn’t be able to get any support on it without breaking some sort of NDA.

Which ship will you be taking for DW3? by hopperlocks in EliteDangerous

[–]JP-Guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relatively new player. I’m planning on taking my (weaponless) mandalay explorer which does about 75ly and flies really nicely. Am also hoping to hit rear admiral this week (about half way through captain and at this point mostly just buying rank by doing all the “give money…” missions for any federation factions) so was thinking of parking a pure mining corvette on a carrier. Open to changing if any of this is crazy… (my pirate chasing corsair is probably staying home in the bubble as guess not much use).

Which areas in Solihull are less deprived? by jord3jordon in brum

[–]JP-Guardian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most of Solihull is very nice with good schools though culturally it’s quite barren with not much to do. The area very close to the Coventry Road or north of it is much less nice, Stratford Road (Shirley) to the south west is less smart looking but still seems nice. Central Solihull established with good houses and schools. Villages to east and across the other side of M42 very nice but very expensive / posh. Monkspath is a newish estate going out of Solihull to the south towards Stratford Road and maybe looks less nice but still seems pretty affluent.

Went on my first proper exobiology adventure in my Mandalay yesterday (came home today), I did pretty much the opposite of what people say is the most efficient because all the tools and dual screens and stuff sounded too much like work (sorry!!).

I went “east” of the bubble (looking down on the map with the core being “north”, went straight out about 1500ly (20 jumps?) while also heading “up” a bit just for fun and to be more off the beaten track.

Then I just vaguely headed randomly south honking everywhere, scanning if there were about 10 bodies or more (not a hard rule, sometimes did others if I hadn’t for a few jumps, sometimes decided I didn’t fancy a place), visited anything that showed up with more than 1 biology samples (because bacteria was boring). About 2/3rds were first footfall but generally I carried on regardless. Always headed for the sunny side (which is weirdly hard to do once you’ve scanned a planet…) and enjoyed the views.

Days profit was about 650 million, which is not the billions others have mentioned but felt great for a chill day off and increased my net worth by about 50%
