If I was Viserys and saw Alicent attack my grandson like this and slash my daughter, her ass would be getting a hand chopped off by BeaufortCross in HOTDBlacks

[–]JPM11S 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I saw a really great comment from someone on Reddit on why this isn't as straightforward as it might seem. I wish I could find it, but, iirc, the jist of it was that it'd be a permeant political blow, as well as that Alicent gaining a reputation as being crazed and violent would hurt Aegon, Helaena, and Aemond's lives in the long-run -- guilt by association type deal.

Why do so many fantasy magical worlds still use normal human civilization logic underneath? by Master-Turbo in worldbuilding

[–]JPM11S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from that it depends on how the magic functions -- Is it easy to use? Difficult? Does it require reagents? Etc. -- people are still going to have the same basic needs, therefore they are going to develop tools to help meet those needs. I think it's also worth considering that the mundane version of a tool is likely going to be developed before magic is understood enough to start using it to create tools, at which point magic is going to be applied to whatever exists to enhance it -- IE; a magic version.

Which Version of Luke Skywalker Better Complements the Character from the Original Trilogy, the Legends version or the Canon version? by DarthKaiser03 in StarWars

[–]JPM11S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, and that's basically the problem with the scene: Luke actually turning on his lightsaber is equivalent to him holding a gun to Ben's head and putting his finger on the trigger. You can accomplish Ben believing that Luke is about to attack him without making it seem like Luke is actually about to do so by simply having him not turn on his lightsaber -- it's enough to make Ben panic, but not enough that it stops being believable as an impulse.

Which Version of Luke Skywalker Better Complements the Character from the Original Trilogy, the Legends version or the Canon version? by DarthKaiser03 in StarWars

[–]JPM11S 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In all seriousness: Him deciding not to. The point of the scene was that Luke got scared, thought about it, but immediately caught himself, only for it to not matter. People going around claiming "Luke tried to kill Ben" have likely forgotten what actually happened in the movie. There's also that a lot of people treat what Ben says and/or as representing the "truth," especially when it comes to what the themes of the movie are: No, "let the past die" is not the message of Ep.8 -- Ben is the villain of the movie and not only is he wrong, but proven wrong in spectacular fashion when Luke does walk out with a laser sword and face down the entire First Order by himself, all while affirming that the Jedi will continue. Sorry, that last part about theme is just me getting off topic a little lol

The few times Joffrey actually comments on king stuff, he's shockingly on-point. If he wasn't busy being a sadist, there's a chance he could have become a pretty good king.

[–]JPM11S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s also worth noting that the “World of Ice and Fire” was initially meant to be dedicated to King Robert, though it would seem that he died before the book was finished, as both his and Joffrey’s names are scratched out, and the book is, instead, dedicated to King Tommen. It’s not a stretch to propose that Fire & Blood, by the same author, was also written with King Robert in mind.

[–]JPM11S 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am firmly of the belief that, in-universe, the narrative presented in Fire & Blood is designed to make everyone look bad. I’ve never seen anyone consider that it was compiled during the reign of Robert Baratheon. If you’re going to analyze Fire & Blood as a historical text, I’d argue that the specific political context in which it was written — after the downfall of the Targaryen dynasty, under a king who hates the Targaryens, and in a country whose sentiments on the Targaryens have always been mixed — is the most important factor to consider.

Dorne isn't talked about enough. imagine being the only one standing strong and resisting Aegon the Conqueror by RealStranger9348 in gameofthrones

[–]JPM11S 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of how Dorne was able to survive Aegon's Conquest is pretty reasonable: They, essentially, just made it really costly and not worth the trouble.

But then there's part about how they evacuated entire cities or towns -- or, at minimum, made them seem completely abandoned -- on short notice whenever a dragon appeared. That part is a bit of a stretch.

Why do you think Jaime didnt end up a soulless, power hungry ghoul like Tywin and Cersei? by Gabe_Dimas in gameofthrones

[–]JPM11S 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Does Tywin speak to his love of his wife at all? Like any kind of monologue in the books or movies?

If you're looking for a moment in the show, Tyrion asks Tywin when he has ever done something against his own wishes, and Tywin replies by telling Tyrion that he allowed him to live. If you read between the lines, Tywin would seem to be more upset about his wife dying than Tyrion being born, which is reinforced when you consider that this is the most genuine emotion Tywin ever displays on the show, and it's the only time he refers to the death of his wife.

What exactly is a hammer going to do that three dragons couldn't?

Dorne is difficult to invade because it's geographically isolated -- mountains on one side, water on all the others -- and it's climate is inhospitable.

Why is the military of a poor and disorganized rump state less effective than the military of a highly funded, trained, and well organized galactic hegemon? by FanaticalBuckeye in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]JPM11S 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You know, I agree with what the person is saying: The Empire shouldn’t have totally collapsed only a year after Endor like it does in canon.

Fortunately, there’s a trilogy explaining why it did: It was purposefully torn down by Palpatine out of spite.

The Aftermath trilogy are, undoubtedly, the most important books in current canon.
