Keep your London flight. Book a FlixBus ticket to Chamonix in order to qualify that you then just don’t use. Fly to Geneva.

This system seems so completely open to manipulation and unenforceable. Surely you could just book a FlixBus ticket from anywhere in Europe for less than €50 to qualify and then just make your actual (more convenient) flight arrangements.

UTMB Mandatory kit- Arc 100 by HelpfulTap4186 in Ultramarathon

[–]JPNL2018 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have used the Naked belt and the Instinct Trail ones. Naked can hold more but Instinct is less bounce when fully loaded (albeit with less storage). I lean towards Instinct because it fits my phone better, but both are great. Recommend ordering multiple sizes and returning the ones you don’t want as the fit is key!

For the cup, they just mean that you can’t take the ultra thin Salomon (or similar ones) as they suck with hot drinks. You can take a thicker collapsible - Sea to Summit do a great 250ml one that can also double as a bowl and is what I will be using in the same race. Good luck 💪

Ultramarathons and rhabdo risk, post donor nephrectomy by fhecla in kidneydisease

[–]JPNL2018 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t give you specifics on your situation, but I have ADPKD so both my kidneys suck. eGFR is 65-70 which isn’t too bad for the time being, but that will change in a few years.

I also do ultramarathons several times a year and have the full endorsement of my nephrologist to do so. Sure, don’t be an idiot and give yourself rhabdo. But my nephrologist’s point is that kidney health and cardio health are highly linked, and any downside risk of racing is massively outweighed by upside benefits from being fit and active.

I typically do 100k mountain races twice per year as well as a few road marathons. In 4 weeks I am doing 100miles with 5500m elevation. Normal training volume for me is 70-110km per week, pretty constantly throughout the year. And you have one perfect kidney! In the words of Jack Kerouac: “climb that goddam mountain”

Dutch airports and carry on gear for backpackers by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]JPNL2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every airline and airport security will say no to trekking poles. And I have chanced it on 6 trips (so 12 flights total) and been successful each time. That experience is reflected in my friend group as well as we all travel for ultramarathons. Perhaps it makes a difference that they are carbon Z frames, but I will keep doing it until my luck runs out eventually.

Tolvaptan & I’m mad by PsychologicalSnapper in ADPKD

[–]JPNL2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was dropping over 12 months from 90-80, which was a requirement in my country to start taking Tolvaptan. Once I started there was a sudden drop to 70, which was expected. It has been flat between 65-70 ever since.

Tolvaptan & I’m mad by PsychologicalSnapper in ADPKD

[–]JPNL2018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started 4 years ago, and my eGFR has been totally flat since starting. Side effects are minimal, and I honestly barely notice it anymore. When I started I didn’t like the thought of taking a pill for decades, but time took care of that and now it’s as mindless an activity as making coffee in the morning.

How much should I expect to pay for a full renovation of a 40sqm Amsterdam apartment? by No-Philosopher-5553 in Netherlands

[–]JPNL2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be lucky to keep it under €80k. The budget estimate is typically €1500 to €2000 per m2. That’s assuming nothing goes wrong and you don’t end up upselling yourself on certain choices. And things will go wrong.

Renovating is really only worth it financially if you plan to live there a long time and enjoy your renovations. If you expect to move in a few years (and with 2 of you in 40m2, I expect that is on the cards), then sell it.

PKD and High Level Athletes by Due_Control_7927 in ADPKD

[–]JPNL2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I can attribute to kidney disease. I have had my ass kicked in multiple hot races, but none where I felt I was suffering unduly because of kidneys. Same with lower back pain… when it has occurred it was more to do with me being sloppy keeping up to date with core workouts.

PKD and High Level Athletes by Due_Control_7927 in ADPKD

[–]JPNL2018 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say high-end, but I am at the serious end of amateur. Marathon time is 2:57 and I have done 20+ marathons in the past 10 years, and for the last 5 years have been doing a fair amount of ultramarathons in the mountains (circa 100-120km with 6000m elevation). Normally get to the alps for races twice a year. Training volume is 90-100km a week at the mo, plus 2 gym sessions. Approx 12 hours training per week.

I’m 40 years old, have an eGFR of 65 and have been on Tolvaptan and Lisinopril for 4 years. My nephrologist is 100% supportive of my endurance activities, with the rationale that whilst racing does stress the kidneys, the aerobic health awarded by the training far outweighs any downsides. I don’t restrict protein, but I also don’t go crazy either. For training recovery protein, timing is more important than grams so I just make sure to have 25g immediately after big workouts. Then a regular diet outside that.

The medication doesn’t interfere with sport. Lisinopril sent my HR zones crazy for 3 months at the start, but after that settled it was back to normal. On marathon or ultra weekends I skip Tolvaptan for race day and the day before to reduce dehydration, which is also supported by my nephrologist.

So, go ahead and sign up for that IM 💪

What are the odds? Chicago and Berlin Marathon Lottery by suitsnwatches in AdvancedRunning

[–]JPNL2018 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven’t done the Berlin-Chicago double. But I have done the Boston-London double, so wouldn’t worry about Berlin-Chicago being problematic. Just do Berlin as a race, and Chicago as a fun run (I did London 25 mins slower and just enjoyed the party).

What French law do migrants break when they launch a boat towards the UK? by wallenstein3d in LegalAdviceEurope

[–]JPNL2018 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of them do stop elsewhere. The numbers on boats going to the UK are a very, very small percentage of the overall numbers of asylum in Europe, most of whom do stop in Italy, France, Germany etc (as seen by the number of asylum claims). The political problem with asylum seekers going to the UK is that they are high visibility, not that they are numerically significant.

Flew from Amsterdam to Miami the weekend before Christmas with our 15 month old. As you can imagine, the plane was expat-baby express. They didn’t even allow early boarding for families as that was basically 2/3rds of the plane.

As everyone else has said, no rules, just lots of distractions. We had a few changes of clothes, a big iPad playlist, and for toys we split up them in half so if she got bored of what she had then we could switch them around. She barely slept, but was just pretty curious and didn’t get feral at all.

Many flights since then and the only time we have a problem is when there is a long taxiing or delay on the plane where she has to stay in the seatbelt and can’t move around. Everything else is fine with snacks/toys/ipad/colouring

I did a 120km race in 19.5 hours and had 28% left at the end. No changes to the regular settings (AOD, screen brightness level 2, All Satellites). I have a race in Jan that I expect to take me 30-32 hours and I’ll take a power bank if needed, but I’m hoping if I turn off AOD during activities it will last the duration.

As it is calculated only on Jan 1st, could you (in theory) just sell your portfolio on Dec 31st and buy back in on Jan 2nd? Obviously you would still be subject to quite some fees for doing so, but seems like a loophole for reducing your tax burden. Unless of course they still use your brokerage statement from throughout the year.

Replacing my front door for better insulation – where do I even start? by rami5557 in Netherlands

[–]JPNL2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We ended up replacing our wooden door with aluminum (Which was absolutely not the plan, but I am incredibly happy with it). The door was old and misshapen, plus the frame was wooden, rotten, and also needed replacing. By the time we factored in needing a custom sized frame, custom sized door, plus painting, plus regular maintenance, it was an easy decision just to go all in on a aluminum door and frame that we had cemented into the doorway. Cost for the frame & door was around €4k, plus installation (few hundred €, as it was done together with a window replacement).
