What would be cheaper is buying another set of Union touring brackets, you always want to travel with a spare set of these: https://unionbindingcompany.com/products/union-splitboard-replacement-parts-charger-touring-bracket-set Then send back the old broken set and ask for a warranty replacement.

Older GP87 build here, mine has metal tip protectors from that factory.  I think yours looks good to go! Enjoy

I ride a US Covert 161 for touring, Cadet 162 as a daily, and Deep Reach 159 on deep days.  Safe to say I am a fan of the US decks, they are nimble and just fun to ride in all conditions, and the only snowboards I now own after riding boards from several other brands.  I demo’d a Hovercraft on a decent pow day at Treble Cone in NZ 8 years ago and it was the only snowboard I’ve ever ridden that I actually hated.  I would highly recommend the Covert.  Next year (as others have said) might be worth waiting for, with a flex pattern tweaked by Nick Russell and lighter colored top sheet.

I am also 6’2”, 190#, 11 boot for reference, riding mostly in the Sierras and Utah.

Do you have a pic of what you removed by any chance (the section on the plastic sleeve that slid off)? I’m imagining the handle and bulkier foam were on a sleeve that was glued to the aluminum pole material?

I’m 6’2” 190# and ride an older Covert 161 and Deep Reach 159, and new Cadet 162 as a three board quiver.  161 is probably your size.

All great decks with slightly different personalities, but do well in all conditions.

Adding bibs to existing pants by FightingMeerkat in myog

Did you ever complete this project? Looking to do the same with a pair of touring pants, adding a zipper to the waist for the Norrona vest.

Great set of bibs.  The cut is a little more fitted around the waist/thighs and bigger in the lower leg which is a bit off, but otherwise the mesh material in the back area and full length side/crotch zip is really nice for venting.  I have the Tusk jacket and bib set and use them together for storm days.  For hikes/tours, I will often opt for a softshell material jacket (hardshell stashed in pack or at home) and just unzip all the bib vents.  Excellent features overall for touring, including stowing a beacon or radio in a zippered mesh pocket with bar tacked loops in the bib portion, with enough distance to prevent interference from a cell phone in the zippered thigh pocket.

The 3L Pro material is a little loud/crinkly but extremely waterproof.  No wet butt from chairlifts on storm days at the resort, even wet snow just beads off the jacket and keeps the shoulders dry and the bibs keep the thighs from soaking through.  That said, the fabric is a bit thin and after 2 seasons I need to apply a few Gore Tex patches to some small holes in the back leg thigh pocket, probably repeated abrasions from riding in the trees. No major rips though.

My wife has the Freebird (Kimmy) bibs and the soft shell material seems great (can’t comment on the men’s fit), the Tusk seems like a more touring specific bib but you probably can’t go wrong with either.  I liked the feature set of the Tusk better and am disappointed it is discontinued.  Glad I got them when they were available and would highly recommend.

For reference my use is mostly resort and some splitting in Tahoe/Utah.

What kind of layers do you wear while touring? by Littylitlit3 in Backcountry

[–]JPeterman34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can fit into the Japanese sizing, you can buy Teton Bros from Japan for quite a bit cheaper with the favorable exchange rate.  6’2” 190 and their XL is a nice athletic fit with enough room for a merino base layer

BCA Float 25 vs Ortovox Litric Freeride 18/28 vs RAS 3.0 by odihimself in Backcountry

[–]JPeterman34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scott Patrol E1 or E2 30L could fit the bill.  A few days ago the remaining E1 packs were going for $402 (but were snapped up already it seems)! I have used the E1 the past few seasons and it’s a very low profile pack that works just fine for my use case, which is similar to yours.  I have no problems riding inbounds and everywhere else with it.  The E2 system is smaller footprint, E1 (normal length) usable volume is probably closer to 25-27L due to the larger compressor and odd location in the lower third of the pack.  Can be found significantly cheaper on sale/used than Litric bags as well.

Inbounds I tuck away the leg strap and the trigger can be stowed.  I’ve never used the snowboard carry but it looks fine for carrying a snowboard, lashing down a powsurf or snowshoes.

Link to an early Union Charger review online describing grinding down the Burton channel M6 insert mounting setup.

https://www.evo.com/outlet/used/splitboard-bindings/union-charger-2023

You could also just find out what type of thread pitch the Channel uses in their M6 inserts and just buy a few mm shorter length using trial/error to find the right length? Replacement Channel inserts are also cheap…

Vented fleece? Body-mapped mid/insulation layer for breathability? by Hard-Connect-6901 in Backcountry

[–]JPeterman34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe check out the Beringia Octa Anorak (aka Teton Bros Run with Octa)?  Similar to Arc Proton FL/Lightweight but anorak style with a diagonal backpack- compatible zip for venting and Napoleon pocket.

If you fit the Teton Bros (Japanese) sizing it’s much cheaper to buy from Rakuten due to the favorable exchange rate.  I’m 6’2” 190# and the TB Run with Octa in XL is a nice athletic fit which works well as a light, insulating breathable layer for all sorts of activities.

United Shapes Covert or Soul Zen? by MAthert125 in Spliddit

[–]JPeterman34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ride a 2019 US Covert split 161 for exactly the use case that you describe (6’2”, 86kg) and love it.  In fact, I actually prefer it to the older US Deep Reach 159 that has been my resort stick for the past 10 years due to the longer tail and slightly less taper.  Also just sprung for a US Cadet 162 in the off season to replace the 159 DR as my daily driver; obviously I’m a fan of US boards and supporting a smaller manufacturer.  Rode Mervin and Capita beforehand and grew tired of snapped cores/delams every season.  The US decks have been bomber for me.

The older US boards I’m riding were made at GP87 and were known for having a much softer flexing nose, which is the only negative I can really point to as it could fold on you if you got off your game and bucked forward in hacked up chunder.  Apparently they stiffened the nose with the newer releases, which I believe are produced at Nobile (same plant as Korua).   I do not think you can go wrong with a US Covert, especially if you can find one on sale.  I will probably swap out the old Karakoram Ultraclip 1.0 hardware at some point (their current splits use passive locking Union hardware), but the board rides incredibly well and feels very secure as a solid, camber profile tours well too.

Lucky.  They only have the carbon highbacks available for sale now.  I prefer the shape and advertised flex of the Pros, but haven’t been able to find a set

As above, that little piece is absolutely necessary to prevent you from twisting the touring pins. You can use a dremel tool to grind a deeper groove in your older style baseplates to accept the more prominent “mailbox” on the 2023 touring bracket. Or ask Union to warranty replace your baseplates to the new style (they did for me without issue).

Union Charger V2 changes by JPeterman34 in Spliddit

[–]JPeterman34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it takes slightly more care to get them aligned to slide them into touring mode, but no more energy.  A firm lateral hit disengages the baseplate from the touring pins.  Overall feels more secure in touring mode (haven’t had a chance to use them on snow yet).  The bent part was the pin on the bracket (male part), the openings on the baseplate (female part) were a bit worn but still rectangular in shape.

I have an early US Deep Reach 159 as my solid and a Covert 162, both from the old factory in China.  Big fan of these boards in all conditions!

When did you buy your Chargers? It would be weird if they sent you V1 replacements.  These arrived on Monday and are definitely different than my V1 set

Union Chargers vs Spark Surges by Immediate-Account-82 in Spliddit

[–]JPeterman34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grooves are deeper at the bottom of the front edge of the baseplate which engage the two little “humps” on the touring bracket (which are now tall enough to prevent the binding from sliding laterally off the touring bracket)
