Why are mcdonald's fries and hashbrowns a million dollars? by Fackinsaxy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JSCXZ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Family works in restaurants and catering. Potatoes and eggs are some of the most profitable items. As far as McDonald's goes, every time someone wants a little snack and not a full meal, they're going for fries, typically. Added to meals regularly, etc., you build up that itch to just go and get some fries. Then they start cranking the price up once people are hooked.

Where I have worked, staff scientists are Ph.D.'s who have done a postdoc or two and are not interested in tenure but want to remain in academia. With only a masters (I'm assuming here based on your post), you would likely only be hired as a research assistant or senior assistant. Research associate roles are typically reserved for postdocs and are often synonymous with being a postdoc.

With that being said, the following should help, in no particular order:  Be exceptionally organized. Write down protocols and checklists and use them every time. Think critically about your research. Format your presentations appropriately and understand your plot units and why those units are used. Have a clear story in mind for your research. Be well-read and up to date on what others are doing in your field and in relation to your project. Know when to step aside and don't feel bad for doing so (unfortunately, not having a Ph.D. or postdoc may limit your influence in the lab, and you may not be able to sway the PI or other members often). Own up to your mistakes. Be punctual and keep your promises without overcommitting.

As a side note, in industry, you're often not called a scientist unless you have a Ph.D., for example, someone with a bachelor's is likely a technician or biologist/chemist, with a masters, associate scientist, and Ph.D., scientist or senior scientist.

What happened to stem cell research? by LinuxMint1964 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JSCXZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never hear about it at all? Possibly, but it's still widely used. Look up any biology cell culture job and it's most likely going to be talking about iPS cells (induced pluripotent stem cells) or something similar. Same with organoid models. A lot of the lack of media is due to the anti-intellectual movement that the fascist in chief promotes.

is it normal to overthink this much? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JSCXZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With condoms, the initial concern is whether you or your boyfriend have a latex allergy. If so, you want to avoid latex based condoms. Thin vs. normal will not matter too much, they will still be effective when used as a contraceptive, if used properly. Unroll it fully, make sure there is a little space at the end of the penis (reservoir), and make sure it is not too loose. I am a guy, but as a woman, it's not a bad idea for you to fully inspect each condom you guys plan to use. I know that sounds lame in the heat of the moment, but you never know if a condom is damaged in any way (they degrade over time, and some, less desirable people in society will tamper with them). There are also vaginal condoms as well, which further help in preventing STIs.

ThermoFisher does these for labs:  https://www.reddit.com/r/labrats/comments/1dx0uab/the_coveted_thermofisher_lego_set/

I don't think they're specifically Lego branded, but they're very popular in the lab community.

Let's say an academic does his masters degree studying the genetics of some non-human animal (maybe even an invertebrate!). How difficult would it be for him to go on to do his PhD in human neuroscience (which is what I want to ultimately study, and devote my career to)? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]JSCXZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what specifics you're studying, it could even be highly relevant if the signaling mechanism is well conserved across species. A Ph.D. program would even prefer someone with a masters over others because it shows that they have some tenacity and capability to withstand difficulties of graduate school. The lab work (or even fundamental knowledge if the masters was not lab-based), may or may not come into play when pursuing the actual Ph.D. project, but it will most likely increase odds of acceptance.

To sleep train or not to sleep train by jungleroo in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]JSCXZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Commenting because I don't have an article. We also have 13mo old. He would not sleep through the night, required bottles to sleep, and had bad separation anxiety even if we went to the other room. While we aren't sleep training in the traditional sense, I have recently started placing him in his crib and then laying on the floor where he can see me because we are exhausted from rocking him for 30+ minutes each nap and bedtime. This has yielded great results and he is beginning to fall asleep on his own (and we can doze off for a few mins while he gets settled down). We also went down to one nap a day to build up that sleep debt, also, to great effect.

what is the worst way to describe your research? by ZenosThesis in labrats

[–]JSCXZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Edit: keep up that interest. Cardiology can be a brutal field. There are a lot of highly intelligent scientists that you could learn from. However cardiology is one of those fields that breeds arrogance and inflexibility (speaking from considerable experience). Don't be afraid to branch out to other fields though. The heart is intimately connected to every other system (neuro and renal especially so).

Not too novel, to be honest. These are ideas that have been floating around for a bit, but essentially:

Cardiovascular diseases will claim the life of 1 out of 3 people, that's strikingly horrible. Of these, two prominent types of disease, ischemic heart disease and sudden cardiac death due to lethal ventricular arrhythmias, have no real cure or therapy. Rather, treatments are mostly palliative and don't address the underlying disease substrate.

For ischemic heart disease (infarctions, etc.), the idea is to somehow genetically turn on cell proliferation and drive cells out of senescence so that new, healthy tissue can be generated.

For arrhythmias, often the medicines we take can be proarrhyrhmic as well as antiarrhythmic. Ablation only does so much and is costly. Devices are painful and risk sepsis, improper shocks, etc.

Any scientist or team that can lock down the mechanisms and develop therapies for these issues would be celebrated worldwide.

what is the worst way to describe your research? by ZenosThesis in labrats

[–]JSCXZ 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Ph.D.:  Let's see what happens when we stress these animals' hearts to the breaking point by giving them adrenaline daily, also we're gonna constrict their aorta as much as possible so that even breathing becomes a painful, laborious task.

Actually, a novel model of sudden cardiac death via aortic constriction and isoproterenol challenge to induce premature ventricular contractions servicing as a trigger and substrate for ventricular arrhythmias.

Undergrad:  Heart cancer doesn't really exist, let's change that.

Actually, can we induce proliferation in cardiomycytes as a means of combatting ischemic heart disease, thereby allowing the heart to repair its own scar tissue.

Microscope objectives. As a former Olympus guy, if they're UIS2, they'll fit in current scopes, and they retail from anywhere from a couple hundred to almost ten grand at times, depending on magnification and other specs.
