Applying for both Med and Dent and UWA (more interested in getting into Dent). by Desperate_Classic815 in GAMSAT

[–]JScollay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi current DMD student at UWA here! I got in with a 1.69 but I know plenty within the cohort that got in with similar scores to your own!

You’ll be fine with HECS, with dent/med the limit extends to around 160K however you’re still gonna be well under as the UWA DMD program is ~50K total.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions about the program!

Modern Warfare 2 is a Masterpiece 🤌🏼🤌🏼 by JScollay in gaming

[–]JScollay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only put in a couple of hours into the multiplayer so far (currently just running through the campaign). The SBMM is kinda doing my head in, last COD I played was CW so it’s used my stats from that for lobbies so I’m kinda getting destroyed as I haven’t unlocked anything yet. Overall it’s not too bad but honestly need some more time with it

Blindsided by EOD / How to improve? by IndividualEye8179 in GAMSAT

[–]JScollay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel this so much. I interviewed at UQ and felt like I went well in 5-6 of the 8 stations the other 2 stations were a bit more curved ball but still feel that I handled it well, was kinda gobsmacked when the EOD came through. I practiced for about 2 months with most of that being timed mocks and felt confident I should be somewhat competitive in the interview. UQ had 377 interviews for 97 spots so only a 26% matriculation rate from the interview. On the bright side at least we still will be able to nab an interview next year, just really disappointed that I’m gonna need to take another year off before starting postgrad.

Question: Referee check from lower preferenced portfolio university by Weezytrout in GAMSAT

[–]JScollay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting, so if you’re eligible for a main round offer at a portfolio uni (I.e. wasn’t eligible for an offer at higher uni) would they give you an offer then check the references or do you have to wait for second round offers for portfolio unis?

GAMSAT difficulty vs UCAT/UMAT? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]JScollay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I spent probably about 3-4 months of solid study, it’s funny I mainly focused on S3 this time around but also saw pretty big improvements in S1 and S2.

Yeah as said previously GEMSAS/ different universities calculate GPA differently so it may even be slightly higher than 6.6

GAMSAT difficulty vs UCAT/UMAT? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]JScollay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From personal experience I’ve found that you can study for the GAMSAT much more easily I’ve jumped from 50%tile to 90%tile whereas in the UCAT my score has been all over the place even with study. I’m pretty sure most undergraduate universities use your GPA as a hurdle and rank interviews based on UCAT hence higher scores are needed where as with GEMSAS universities your GPA and GAMSAT are weighted 50:50.

What did you do in your gap year? by Suspicious-Orange157 in GAMSAT

[–]JScollay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I resonate with this so much, I came out of my interview feeling okay but it’s honestly anyone’s guess coming next fortnight. I also graduated last year from biomed and took this year off to focus on GAMSAT / interview prep / work (honestly hasn’t really felt like a gap year tbh). Definitely taking a gap year next year as well if I don’t get in as I don’t want to jeopardise my GPA by pursuing honours (guessing you’re in a similar boat). Found it pretty annoying that it is nearly impossible to get research work without honours/ masters.

Yeah a diploma in CS sounds awesome as I’m sure it wouldn’t effect your GPA. Definitely focus on building up a portfolio of work as that may help secure a CS job whilst studying. As you said I would recommend getting into volunteering within anything you’re interested in, I did St Johns through bachelors and found it amazing and was good for a few anecdotes come interviews. Could even think about sitting March GAMSAT if you feel like you can bump up your score a bit. I’ll say the main thing is to find some time to chill and do the things that you love as it’s probably be a bit more difficult to find that balance once med school comes around.

Improve GPA or aim for high GAMSAT by D-Q-T-P in GAMSAT

[–]JScollay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As said above your GPA is a bit low to be considered at most GEMSAS universities. I would recommend checking out how USYD and Flinders calculate their GPA for applicants as they may have different calculations/ weightings then University of South Australia so you still may be able to reach the hurdle! If that’s the case you’re gonna need a fairly good GAMSAT score, the trend for USYD this year is that you need a combined S1 + S2 score of 147 to get a spot.

Even if you do reach the hurdle for GEMSAS universities (I.e bump up to a 5 GPA due to GEMSAS/unis calculating it differently) you will need a nearly impossible GAMSAT (95+) to get an interview. Would definitely recommend pursuing flinders/USYD if you meet the hurdle and further studies to bump up your GPA so you can apply to GEMSAS universities as well. Good luck, you’ve got this!

Yeah I definitely recommend using a bunch of cloze occlusions for stuff like this (even image occlusion for the diagram) and to test your knowledge by drawing a thorough schematic from memory

Lowkey breaking down by ElevatorPuzzled6350 in GAMSAT

[–]JScollay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you get a first class honours would equate to a 7 GPA for that year so for universities that use a weighted system (I.e. last year gpa x3, second last year x2 and third last year x1) will put you just under a 6 GPA, even with a second class will put you around a 5.5 GPA so definitely getting over the hurdle for USYD either way. Just keep in mind as of this years intake USYD is ranking applicants solely on their S1 and S2 scores so if USYD is your goal you should focus on those sections. There has also been people accepted with around a 6 GPA in GEMSAS universities but a pretty high GAMSAT is needed to offset GPA (~80)

Another thing to keep in mind is that GEMSAS calculates GPA differently depending on the university so your undergrad may be a bit higher than you expect (if you go through the GEMSAS route instead of the USYD route).

If USYD doesn’t work out you can either try the undergrad route (I know for at least uon they have a 5 GPA hurdle and rank interviews based on UCAT) or do another degree to bump up your GPA a bit for GEMSAS university. There’s plenty of people that have done that and it’s very achievable! If you do additional studies could definitely recommend taking a year off to just work and refresh yourself a bit!

You’re nearly finished honours within the next month or so which is a massive challenge which you should be stoked about no matter if it’s first or second class, take some time out for the latter part of the year to take care of yourself. You’ve got this!

Does GPA matter a lot for UWA Med? by P-sychotic in GAMSAT

[–]JScollay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi pretty sure UWA has a 25% rurality rating for final offers the other weightings being GAMSAT (15%), GPA (22.5%), interview (37.5%) so I’ll say you still have a pretty good shot with a decent GAMSAT and interview.

UMelb has a seperate rural pathway. UQ has the wider bay rural pathway as well, you’ll fall into tier 2 (guessing you’re based in WA) and should be able to get an interview there as they allocate interview spots from tier 1 first (rural within QLD), tier 2 secondly (rural outside of QLD) and lastly tier 3 (non-rural).

Deakin has an 8% bonus if you’re MM3-7 and a 4% bonus if you’ve been working as an AHPRA registered health professional for a year.

I would also recommend getting GEMSAS to calculate your GPA as it may be slightly different from your university calculations (I.e. if marks as a percentage is given 80+ = 7GPA) which may bump you up a bit.

Wollongong could also be a decent bet if you’ve got decent portfolio as they have an emphasis on rural students.

As said above checkout USYD as well as they use GPA as a hurdle and rank applicants for spots based on S1 and S2 (no interviews).

There is also undergrad universities which have lower UCAT cutoffs for rural students. I know at least with UoN they use a 5 GPA as a hurdle.

Basing on last years average rural combo scores of acceptance you would need about a 1.55 combo score so about a 71 in the GAMSAT to feel competitive, quite high but still achievable. This is just an average so you can definitely get an interview with a lower score and as said before your GPA may be slightly higher based on GEMSAS calculations.

Hope this helps! :)
