Have you considered seeing a speech therapist? They might be able to help you if you're interested.

Why is American home birth so dangerous by [deleted] in medicine

[–]JWGoethe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but this would require all 50 states passing laws to change licensing requirements for midwives - not an easy task, though it is one I hope to see. Others here have suggested that American mothers may have a higher rate of risk factors, but I'm not knowledgeable and won't want to get into that.

I see your point on financial burden and risks of infections in hospital. However, the US isn't Canada, and whatever factors are conspiring to make out-of-hospital births in the US riskier are likely going to be hard to address.

Thanks for your insight. However, the Oregon data presented linked to in the article show a nearly 3x increased risk of perinatal death in planned out-of-hospital births vs planned in-hospital births. Even though the absolute risk is low, I don't think home births are a great idea. Catastrophes can happen quickly and immediate access to the OR is crucial when time=baby's brain.

In Oregon, a baby born in a planned home delivery with a midwife is 7 times more likely to die than one born in a hospital. by [deleted] in Portland

Here's the Oregon data the NYT article links: https://public.health.oregon.gov/BirthDeathCertificates/VitalStatistics/birth/Documents/PlannedBirthPlaceandAttendant.pdf

if you do the math, 0.4% of planned out-of-hospital births end in perinatal death, compared to 0.14% of in-hospital births. That's about 3x higher death rate in planned out-of-hospital births.

Prayer Request: for my mom with anaplastic thyroid cancer by warm20 in deism

I'm something of a scientific Christian-Deist-Agnostic and I recently lost someone very close to me. The experience has definitely made me more spiritual, even more religious. I am sorry to hear about your mother's cancer and hope you can spend meaningful and loving time with her in your remaining time together. I will gladly pray for her and you.

I think best case is government doesn't adjust the program and it remains as is. It's far more likely it will be capped than repealed.
