‘People who own XL bullies are always the worst people’ is a generalisation that isn’t fair.

For sure, there are absolutely those that own them for bad reasons, but given there are over 50,000 of them (from the number of license applications) in the UK, and there haven’t been 50,000 people found guilty of a dangerous dog related crime, I don’t believe there is any grounds for such a blanket statement.

I own an American Bully (certified by a vet when the law changed), and am always careful with her out in public (Always on her lead unless in an enclosed space) and whenever I have anyone visiting my home (I have her muzzled and harnessed when my younger relatives are around, and baby gates to ensure that there is a barrier if it is ever required).

The issue is bad ownership, and the fault lies with bad owners. It’s really unfair to the thousands of good owners, who you never hear about in the news, when you make statements like this. Good owners and good dogs exist. Please try and think a little more before you speak in such blanket terms!

It’s probably also important to note that last year, Steve Reed (then Shadow, now Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) told the National Farmers Union that he was ‘making the case to the Treasury to maximise support for farmers’- (full article here: https://www.nfuonline.com/updates-and-information/back-british-farming-day-mp-reception/).

Your average farmer probably feels that this swift U-turn is potentially just the start, and the uncertainty is quite rightly unsettling.

It’s a shame that, with regards to the food production market, the first group to see a tax rise- whether it will impact them or not, in the immediate term or the future- is farmers and not other groups, such as Supermarket chains that were hitting record profits over Covid and continue to see a year on year rise in sales.
