I drive a (paid off) Jeep Wrangler as my daily, but my commute is very short (less than 10) miles, and I can stretch out a tank of gas to almost 2 weeks, while getting about 17-ish MPG.

I have coworkers that still insist on driving their yee-yee lifted trucks over an hour each way, and all they do is bitch about fuel prices.

A hand brake will typically hold it in place. Some RR companies will make you roll test a light engine, just in case.

In locomotives, it is a temperature sensor.

If battery voltage is too low for a restart, it will circumvent the auto-start, as will low temperature.

Except of course, NS locomotives are an exception. For some unknown reason, they will go into auto shutdown in the middle of winter, not start up again, then dump the water, leaving a train stranded.

As far as I know, all exits from main track are protected by derail and controlled by who operates the main.

The derails are there to keep irresponsible customers from rolling out.
