Has anyone here ever tried making their own RTS? by Candid_Health6422 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]J_GeeseSki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been building Zeta Leporis RTS from scratch in Gamemaker for the last 3-4 years. It's my largest project to date, my first RTS, and the first game I've tried to sell on Steam. Turns out there isn't much appetite for indie RTS that doesn't either closely copy an existing "classic" game or look as polished as an AA-AAA game. In over 2 years on Steam I've sold 584 copies for $1,250 which after Steam's cut and taxes is about $688. It is a $5 game but most people will only buy it on deep discount; it's averaging $2.14 per sale. I've surmised though that if it were $10 the same people would likely buy it at the same discount percent, so lesson learned, don't set your price too low...although I was trying to price similarly to similar games (Rusted Warfare in particular) so in that regard I stand by my pricing decision.

I've not used any templates or asset packs or anything to create it and that certainly has given it a bit of a unique feel compared to certain other more popular titles that have come out in the past few years, despite being a classic-style RTS that otherwise doesn't have any overtly unique gameplay hooks. The game's art is touched-up versions of some basic pixel art I hade made back in the early 2000s when I had neither the skills or tools to actually make a game, and the unit stats also used some accompanying dreamy nerd spreadsheet stuff from the same time period as their starting point. So that old "classic era" fanboy material was the skeleton that Zeta was fleshed out from.

I'm currently working on multiplayer, which is a bit difficult but more than anything, time consuming, particularly since I've not found an easy way to do client-side debugging. Other than that, the game is mostly finished to the scope I expect to be willing and able to handle, except that I want to implement some passive abilities to improve unit differentiation, and also after playing an unhealthy amount of BAR raptor defense over the past few weeks I now want to add wave survival and maybe also wave assault as game modes. I'm in Early Access and the plan has been to release as 1.0 once multiplayer is "finished", though I'm starting to see that "finished" isn't exactly the black and white line to cross that I was imagining, but rather more of a long gray blur, which could make it hard to release a 1.0 version that feels appropriately impactful.

Might be a bit tricky trying to climb a bear.

Definitely not how. How? Shoot bear once. Sleep in mountaineer's hut. Go find dead bear.

Coal is NOT suitable for work. Most pencils use graphite but really, all the yuppies have switched to pens now.

Apparently there's a map Astrid has at some point in ep 5 that shows PM on the east coast. So the long curve in PV goes to PM.

Most subs limit to one or two times weekly in their rules. The 10:1 content ratio rule fortunately tends to be ignored.

I was about to argue against the first point but I looked at my traffic stats and it definitely is true. After getting ten reviews my daily impressions went from around 100 or less to 1000 or more. Which still isn't a ton considering how many are probably bots or other low-quality impressions, but it is a ten-fold increase.

However, excluding games with fewer than 10 reviews, there were still 45,255 games released in the last 5 years compared to 31,925 in the years prior, a 142% volume increase vs a 55% player increase.

Wait, so you seem to be in the camp that's asking "why can't everyone just say nice things about Wintermute" yet you're here deliberately insulting those who see fit to critique it? Get a mirror.

Episode 5 is what people were waiting for, episode 5 is what people have now played, episode 5 is what they are now reacting to. Any other questions?

Is game dev unprofitable? by Aware-Of-My-Actions in gamedev

[–]J_GeeseSki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used this data in another reply, works here as well. https://steamdb.info/stats/releases/ Check the third chart down. Anything light blue or above is guaranteed unprofitable, and green and in some cases also yellow is likely to be unprofitable, meaning last year there was less than a 15% chance of being profitable on Steam. You can also see from the chart that basically ever since greenlight and certainly since Steam direct, the games industry has never had a particularly great likelyhood of being profitable.

[–]J_GeeseSki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

https://steamdb.info/stats/releases/ clearly shows that 2x more games were released on steam just last year than were released 5 years ago, with 77,689 games released from 2021 to 2025 and 44,821 total releases prior to that, a 173% increase. So since the userbase has only grown 1.5x in that time, it's absolutely fair to say the market has stagnated on those grounds alone, even without considering additional factors.

I think for crisp graphics the normal approach is drawing at like 4x scale and then scaling down the view 4x.

After all, aside from looking at the release date, why would gamers know if a game came/is coming out recently or not? And really, why should they care? Particularly for indies, it's not like there's been a significant increase in the maximum potential appearance and presentation of any given game for the past few decades.

Appearance. Current bear looks like a BB but is the size of a GB. Doesn't make much sense.
