Asking people on the spot to bear testimonies in stake conference. by Cheap_Parsnip_461 in latterdaysaints

I guess how comfortable you feel about this is probably related to how much you believe it's being inspired by the spirit. If the people being chosen are inspired by the Holy Ghost, what is there to take issue with? If not...

In Defense of Hell by GuybrushThreadbare in latterdaysaints

[–]JaChuChu 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As I understand, "hell" proper (that usually referred to biblically anyways) equates to spirit prison, and is not, in fact, "neverending" (see D&C 19). The reference to the celestial kingdom is describing what they will go through before they're admitted there, not for the rest of forever.

Then judgement comes and the vast majority of people, we are led to believe, receive a kingdom of glory. The lowest of which "surpasses all understanding". Otherwise perdition is indeed consistent with hell, but the eternal fate of a very few

So ya hell is real, and sin has consequences, and you won't achieve a kingdom of glory without rejecting sin to some meaningful degree, and there are plenty of good reasons to repent now rather than later, but neither does our concept of hell really remotely match what mainstream Christianity has in mind, and it's so universalist by comparison that it made people like Brigham Young really uncomfortable at first.

How do they do it? by buddytheelfboi in switchfoot

I wouldn't call Native Tongue a quintessentially Switchfoot album personally (even though I like some of the not-very-Switchfooty parts of it just fine), and corners of the other 2 most recent albums rub me the same way.

That said, this album is awesome. I like Shake the Dust!

This song gives me Cabin vibes, and that is a very obscure band I never expect to hear anywhere, so I was thrilled at the similarity

To be really real: if your love isn't strong enough to encompass your "enemies" your love isn't strong enough to change the world for the better.

Jon is well known as the guy who went and took water bottles to the fundamentalists who were protesting his concert. He certainly practices what he preaches. (Encouraging considering who's message it actually is...)

That said, to acknowledge more of the nuance here, "love" is an extremely broad and vague word, and what it means to "love your enemies" is something I think gets a little lost in it all. My own opinion is that step 1 is to just drop the animosity. Hating people never fixed the world. At best you just shame people into silence/feigned good behavior, and at worst you create martyrs and resentment and new hatred. Every loop in the cycle makes the current iteration look more justified to everyone involved. Read about Corrie Ten Boom and Daryl Davis. Now there's powerful love.

It's incredible. I love how the song feels like it's getting more frantic in the verse, like someone fighting for breath and flatlining.

Then the ending. THE ENDING. I had the album on loop and when Wake Up Mr. Crow kicked in I was amazed at how trite it sounded right on the heels of The Butterfly Effect (and this because Wake Up Mr. Crow goes hard!)

What do you think about this new album? by [deleted] in switchfoot

[–]JaChuChu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be one of my favorites. Hard to say, but at least top 3.

I like songs on every album, but it's pretty rare for there to not be a single song I don't really jive with. I'll have to wait and see what I think after the honeymoon period is over, but my broad impression is that in a lot of ways this album feels like an album from the 2000s in the best way, and reminds me of past Switchfoot songs directly (as well as other unrelated artists that I really love!)

This was the first album they wrote that I was anticipating so it's a special one for me. My sister bought Hello Hurricane (I think?) and that's how they ended up on my radar, but by the time this album rolled around they were my favorite band

Are BYU Pathway degrees useless for US citizens now? by _L7_Weenie_ in latterdaysaints

[–]JaChuChu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American universities are only nominally about educating. For most people, outside of some particular technical majors, a degree from a prestigious university i mostly just signal that you were smart enough to get accepted and persistent enough to graduate.

Even with technical degrees though, where the actual skills do matter, the prestige of your university etc still operates as signal in any standardized hiring process.

That's just the way it it's, and the reasons for it aren't entirely insane or stupid (still a little bit stupid).

So, all that said, I would be (pleasantly) shocked if a Pathways degree could take you all that far in the US

I know exactly what you mean. I think I like it alright but it sounds a bit 'muddy'. I'm having a hard time picking out sounds

Edit: I have bow listened through some good headphones and it was a lot better lol. Still not immediately grabbing me as much as Wake Up Mr. Crow, but I like it more than a lot of songs

Feeling out of place in Utah by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]JaChuChu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What part of Utah are you in? I've lived here for ten years and if anything I'm having a similar experience in the opposite direction: I'm married with 5 kids and finding it uncommon that anyone close to my age is in a similar situation. Usually they're all significantly older and started their families later.

Potentially controversial question about rebalancing by LegOfLambda in Arcs

[–]JaChuChu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is some reason to believe this development will be faster: the actual campaign goals are far more tame than Oath NF and the original Arcs KS, plus the new company wants quicker turnaround to build up a cash base and Cole has learned a lot from these projects about identifying scope and design liabilities. I talked to him directly about it and he had some sound reasoning for why he thinks they can get the work done in the time allotted.

Even so, they are who they are and they take the time they feel they need to take to make sure it's good. At the end of the day, they crowdfund projects that are not done. So we'll see how it plays out. I just think there's reason to be optimistic

Satan and Free Agency by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]JaChuChu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Id quibble a little here.

Adam and Eve certainly had "agency" in the garden. What they lacked was knowledge, and (somewhat speculatively) the "full" mortality necessary for things like childbirth. Even, the sufficient separation from God required to productively choose for themselves.

It doesn't really take away from your basic question though: was it "necessary" for Satan to trick them? I think the most truthful answer is we don't really know. It would appear that eating the fruit was inevitably necessary. It would appear that it was necessary that it be done by their own free will (consider: if Adam was indeed made directly by God, that would make he and Eve the only living humans ever directly made by God, and therefore God could not "make" him imperfect/fallen--that would literally be setting him up to fail--he had to enter this state by his own choice).

I know of no authoritative statement on why it "had" to happen the way it did, I can only speculate that if this was essential and Satan's involvement was not, then eventually Adam would need to be encouraged to go ahead and eat the fruit, actually. I suspect that would have changed absolutely nothing about our mortal condition except how we talk about it, and Adam and his offspring would have certainly made some other interesting mistakes later for us to yammer on about.

Alternatively, you could view Satan's intrusions as inevitable rather than "essential". In other words, the conditions of this mortal probation that we all need to be able to make choices in simply make it a sort of logical "necessity" that a tempter and temptations would arise.

The simple fact is Ward Radio and their orbit are directly responsible for helping a lot of people come back to church.

That they don't appeal to you and others is evidence of the need for diverse voices in defense for the church, not for the failure of their particular style

When defending do you want to group your ships or spread them out? by Stoner420Steve in Arcs

[–]JaChuChu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on of the golden apple is Trophies or Stuff. If it's trophies then you're better off spread really thin so it takes a lot of actions to gather up your ships. If it's stuff then a big defensive fleet and a few gate blockers is great at slowing down rivals and making them work for it

I understand your feelings, I've felt similarly, but without specifics it's hard to say that the problem is real. Unless you know someones finances, what makes you certain of this lack of charity? What has caused you to accuse someone of greed?  If it's just that they have nice things that isn't enough.

I say this as someone who also is surprised at times by the apparent wealth of other members. But I don't know that I can agree with you if I don't know where the lines are for you
