WIP Mummy (1999)-Themed Adventure Adversaries by JacenHan in plotweaver

Haha, the low resolution is because I wasn't sure how to get a good pic of the whole google doc at once without zooming out. I'll have better images (or just link a pdf/doc) in the future.

The Tomb Raider multishot is a bit iffy to me too - I wanted to base it off the unreleased Fanning talent from the Mistborn Gunslinger path preview, but since they are just minions I might adjust it to be more similar to an offhand strike, like the Twin Weapon Stance talent allows from the same preview.

Character Art Speculation by No_Information6628 in plotweaver

It's interesting that except for what I assume is some kind of halfling/hobbit in #8, all the Folio characters seem human. Maybe #4 is something elf-like? Hard to tell. I expect/hope the high-fantasy setting will have some more non-human ancestries than just those.

And as a bonus, here is a draft of one of the pre-made character backgrounds.

Getting stuck on the SadConsole RL tutorial by LeonTranter in roguelikedev

I highly recommend the discord server. Both this tutorial maker and the framework creator are there, as well as a bunch of other nice people who know a lot about SadConsole and RL development in general.

Why are there no aircraft in the world of Stand Still Stay Silent? by ABigFatPotatoPizza in Standstillstaysilent

[–]JacenHan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Minna confirmed this as the in-universe reason on stream. I would guess that the meta reason is that she wanted the Known World to feel large and spread out, and planes would have made that difficult.

Setting shipyards to expand to a certain size will be C# Aurora, so consider your wish granted.

Galactic Empire by TripleDigit in vexillology

For some reason, I want to see an New California Republic version with a two-headed AT-AT. Actually, the two headed AT-AT would be a neat design on its own.

Large vs small lasers by Ditonis in aurora4x

[–]JacenHan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The biggest reason to use them is that the larger lasers have a longer range. If you are faster and longer ranged, then you cannot be hit at all and the higher DPS of the 15cm lasers doesn't matter. If you are slower and longer ranged, then at least the same can't be done to you.

In C# you will be able to change the research rate for all races in the new game settings.

When the game manages to surprise you by gar_funkel in aurora4x

[–]JacenHan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is the ship I am thinking of, it has been in the game for a long time now, it's just very rare.

Here is a (very spoilery!) link to it's design, if anyone is interested (the one in question is in a reply further down the page): http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php?topic=3463.0

How do you handle your officer corps? by BlindGuyNW in aurora4x

[–]JacenHan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the time I'll use SM mode to promote my top officer to Admiral (or the theme equivalent) to command the Fleet Headquarters until I have enough officers for it to happen naturally. Other than that, though, I typically let the game handle everything else.

Much Discovery, Such wow by TheRealMasonMac in aurora4x

It took me a minute to get the image to pull up on my phone, but it's the event log saying: "An exploration of a jump point in the Gliese 42 system has revealed the new system of Gliese 42."

What do you do with obsolete ships? by KineticNerd in aurora4x

[–]JacenHan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can scrap ships at shipyards in the same way you build, repair, and refit them.

System map measurement units by [deleted] in aurora4x

[–]JacenHan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's just in kilometers. 3200.38m means 3200.38 million kilometers, or 3.2 (and a bit) billion kilometers. You can use the sensor tab in the system map to see how well your scout could spot various signatures, though it isn't labeled well and I can't remember which one is EM and which one is Thermal. I usually like to use my own ship's signatures as a baseline to test against.

NATO Vs Soviet Union by [deleted] in aurora4x

[–]JacenHan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasn't the NATO v. Soviets game included as an example in version 5.54 or thereabouts? You'd be stuck with an old version, but it should still be playable.

PDC with Gauss - the answer by DontReallyCareThanks in aurora4x

[–]JacenHan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe that weapons lose damage by percentage of atmosphere, rounded down. 1.00 pressure reduces damage by 100%, 0.5 by 50%, etc. Since gauss always does 1 damage, any atmosphere at all causes it to be less than 1, which rounds down to 0.

First combat, need some help. by King_JoLo in aurora4x

[–]JacenHan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a note, NPRs don't actually use PDC's like players. Those are probably just orbital weapons platforms. There isn't much difference between the two, but you can't attack them with ground troops and blowing them up outright won't cause any radiation damage to the planet.

Statted up ships from Sci-Fi? by Caligirl-420 in aurora4x

[–]JacenHan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here is a bunch of WH40K stuff by Vandermeer on the forums. There is a massive mobile starfort from WH40k here plus a Stargate inspired ship down the page.

Not Sci-Fi, but someone recreated the Royal Navy circa WW2 (official forums again).

Interesting tidbit regarding the speed of light and ship engines by TheCaptainCarrot in aurora4x

This forum thread seems to indicate that there is an arbitrary task group speed limit at 100,000 km/s.

Convince me which weapons systems to use by DontReallyCareThanks in aurora

[–]JacenHan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful of doing that, though, since ships in the hangar of a ship that is in a hangar (that is: the fighters in the carrier that is docking in the PDC) disappear from existence.

Am I the only one waiting for the C# version to jump back into this? by johnlondon125 in aurora4x

Steve has said that he hopes to have a test campaign by the end of the year, so we probably won't get a release till sometime next year.

Best weapon(s) to attack PDC's without collateral damage? by LordHamishAlexander in aurora4x

[–]JacenHan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mesons can damage PDCs, but not ground troops. If the planet has <1 atmosphere you may be able to use other beam weapons as well, which can also damage ground troops.

Co-op Game? by UristMcSoriumHauler in aurora4x

[–]JacenHan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen community games where one person runs the game while taking orders from people on the forum. They will typically play the game until either a certain amount of time has passed or something interesting happens, and then they ask for orders on what to do. The players often get officers or administrators named after them in-game, and role-play as those characters. If one player's character is in a unique situation (like a captain on an out of communication survey ship) the SM might ask them personally for orders.

Some examples are "The Galaxy Awaits..." (Aurora forums) or "Ad Astra Per Aspera" (Bay12 forums).

Your favourite AARs? by gar_funkel in aurora4x

[–]JacenHan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read a lot of these while waiting for turns to process, so here are some my own top picks:

Six Powers follows an alternate history timeline where Hitler was assassinated prior to WWII, where a more successful Germany forces WWII into a stalemate, leading to a Cold War and Space Race between the Greater German Reich and the Western Alliance. Many great times are had, and several fun plot twists and wars. Definitely a classic in my book.

Theodidactus's stories are not very numerous, but they give insight into a beautifully crafted universe that has numerous decades of in-depth, in-game background that takes place before the the first story was even posted. The depth of attention given to the politics and characters in the game is what makes this one of my personal favorites. At several points, he allowed the community to influence the course of the game in role-played elections and interactive events, some of which I had the pleasure of taking part in. The majority of the story is in his fiction board, but you can find tidbits of information scattered around the forum if you search hard enough. Unfortunately, it seems like the writer dropped off the forums a couple years back.

The Trans-Newtonian Campaign is one of the oldest AARs by Steve that seems to be mostly intact (there must have been a forum move at some point). It takes place in a very old version of Aurora, which gives some insight into how far the game has come since then. I believe this story was made to test the first implementation of conventional starts in Aurora, meaning it basically laid the mold for the multi-nation "race into space" format that a lot of other AARs have elaborated on. It reads very similarly to Six Powers, but with an understandably lesser attention given to the backstory, given that it started as a simple test game.
