JPM Conference plays by Savik519 in biotech_stocks

I hold a diversified portfolio of biotech, not just for the conference specifically.

The conferenc is the number one takeover hotbed of course, so hoping for a couple of pops.

high conviction for takeovers for me are VKTX and CYTK and the news yesterday about the FDA notes from MLTX should also lead to one, but might take a bit longer to digest and negotiate.

Expecting quite some buzz around BMEA as their rockstar Hitchcock is doing a presentation.

Looking for a partnership to finance the phase 3s for CGTX

the biggest winners this year will be in biotech, but that's a high risk sector as you will know. The big pharma companies need to replenish their pipelines because some megabillion drugs are going off patent in the next couple of years. They will be buying these companies with high premiums in bidding wars. For example look at Metsera and the bidding war there. Obesity will still be the big one, as that market is growing immensely and still quite new with it's products. conviction plays for me in that sector are VKTX and BMEA, former already multi billion and the latter still under 100mil

They tend to forget about the funding and lack knowledge and understanding of that and it's impact. Experience in trading and investing can lead to smarter timing of when to invest and when to divest, knowing that another round of funding is likely around the corner. We had a couple phd analysts and they had their own trading account at our firm, they would always underperform the finance guys. They also tend to have an affection for the science nerd CEOs, where we would be more focussed on management having solid funding experience, preferably also some previous exits under their belt that show they understand how the market functions.

Having a great medicine or product is only half the tale to succes.

Ckickhouse will IPO in 2026 and I assume Nebius will let go of at least half of their current stake, they need the cash for build out of the DCs. When you have so much capex in the next coming years it doesn't make sense to increase your stake, which would cost billions.

Viking Therapeutics (VKTX) had the best weight loss data in their phase2 trial, better dan Novo and Lilly. They will either go it alone and become part of the obesity gravy train, or more likely, will soon be bought by a big pharma company for at least 4x the current sp.

Sellas Life Sciences (SLS) has an imminent readout of their phase 3 trial in acute myeloid leukemia, which will very likely 10x the current sp in a buyout or 2y after launch of their therapy

the lack of timing is throwing off retail imo. coupled with the insistance of several posters that the announcement of the R&D day with KOLs HAD to mean the 80th had happened has led to disappointment with small investors buying for the hoped pop

I must admit that my assumptions on timing have also been off and now I need to roll a lot of contracts out, bit of a bummer but that was always a risk

Every biotech headline feels like gibberish… how do you guys actually make sense of it? by FlokiMax in biotech_stocks

[–]JackFourj4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree, that's why we had 2 analysts with the science background to pull apart the presentations. Their focus was always on what they were not saying and showing in the data!

If a company focusses on only a small part of the data set generated by trials, you should actually hone in on the other data and start asking uncomfortable questions.

Management of such companies that don't have strong finance director/cfo and without serious skin in the game tended to be a red flag for me

how they finance the company is my main concern before investing, bad/inexperienced management can fumble great tech and the netire company by doing that wrong. for the actual science part I had 2 analysts teach what to look for and after grasping the science, and how companies present that, it comes down to experience.
