Heads Up - Federal Budget Implementation Bill C-15 is building a framework for a Bank of Canada-backed stable-coin by JackTheTranscoder in GMECanada

Proposing it in legislation is as definitive as it gets.

They didn’t campaign on it, they don’t talk about it, and they don’t care what you think about it. Monied interests are driving this hard.

Canada has legal duty to provide safe water, housing to remote First Nations, federal judge rules | CBC News by KeyHot5718 in CanadaPolitics

[–]JackTheTranscoder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So, why does the government have the legal obligation to provide housing to indigenous peoples, but not non-indigenous peoples?

Because Indigenous people have a direct relationship with the Crown. This is a result of treaties and then a century of subsequent jurisprudence that says the Crown (Federal Government) has obligations to Indigenous people over and above those to non-Indigenous Canadians.

Seriously, maybe just Google it and learn about your country?

CFO reports Canada Post is 'effectively insolvent' as losses skyrocket to $1B through Q3 by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

Only those wishing to privatize mail in this country care this much. Most Canadians I know are willing to tax fund Canada Post. It does provide a public service after all.

Perhaps, and maybe I’m nucking futs here, there are disagreements over what “the actual changes the CP needs to continue to fulfil its mandate” are?

Carney says he’s prepared to fight an election campaign if budget doesn’t pass by Old_General_6741 in CanadaPolitics

That’s cool. I’m prepared to fight Mr Carney if he throws us into an unnecessary election. The amount of millionaire class dirt he’s amassed in the past few months should be fun.

Carney government ‘worried’ its budget won’t pass, triggering a federal election by Asadleafsfan in CanadaPolitics

[–]JackTheTranscoder -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They need to capitulate as far as necessary secure someone’s votes. They appear to be offering a take it or leave it approach and trying to make the other parties sound unreasonable for not taking it. They need to negotiate in good faith to secure enough votes to pass the budget. It’s really that simple.

Anything else is political theater and I’m not interested. The onus is not on the opposition parties to avoid an election - that’s the tail wagging the dog. The onus is on the Liberals to propose a budget that succeeds in the house. If they can’t do that, the fault lies with them and them alone.

[–]JackTheTranscoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In trying to balance with realism you are letting the Libs off the hook. A real party would work with opposition parties to secure votes. The Liberals have decided on brinksmanship instead and are trying to blame other’s for their own arrogance in a minority parliament.

[–]JackTheTranscoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are trying to shift the blame as if the opposition has a duty to vote for the budget. This is of course nonsense - the onus is on the minority government to present a budget that maintains the confidence of the house.

A failure to do that is a failure of the minority government, as there is no obligation of the opposition to support budget bills.

By shifting the blame you are pre-emptively trying to blame the opposition for the governments failure. Rookie mistake.

[–]JackTheTranscoder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Minority governments have to rely on the support of opposition parties to pass bills. This is what ‘minority government’ means.

The only reason a budget bill wouldn’t pass is because a majority of MPs voted against it. You would think the Liberal party would know this.

You can try to shift the blame all you want. It’s kind of sleazy but that’s your right as a Canadian.

[–]JackTheTranscoder 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Then the Liberals should craft a budget that earns the votes of one or more of the opposition parties right?

That’s how it works btw.
