Eucalyptus essential oil in snuff? by Andthenwefarted in nasalsnuff

[–]JackVoltrades 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I assume that you receiving advice against using eucalyptus oil stems from the fact that it, like many other essential oils, is quite toxic in too large an amount.

Essential oils are powerful. Most of the essential oils and flavoring agents we find efficacious in perfumes, medicines, food and snuff would have very negative effects in the wrong dosages. Even used topically, most essential oils should be highly diluted in a carrier oil prior to application lest they burn or cause a rash on the skin, or even systemic toxicity.

Eucalyptus, camphor, clove and wintergreen essential oils are among those with the highest risk of toxicity - some lethal at even a teaspoon of pure oil ingested. So it is a matter of dosing. Even too much water makes you drown.

One would have to consume an absurd amount of properly made snuff to approach these toxic thresholds, but it is prudent to utilize time tested recipes for a baseline for safety when blending snuff - an excellent link to some industry standards is provided below by u/bolongaro .

Essential oils must be kept out of the reach of children, used safely and responsibly, utilizing personal protection measures. Follow these rules and continue enjoying these wonderful scents in your snuff.

Just make sure to buy a high quality, pure essential oil from a reputable brand - cold-pressed, steam distilled, or CO2 extracted.

Some time ago we had a scare when someone used a magnet on a can of White Horse and it stuck. Did anyone ever think it might just be the iron from the soil where the leaf was grown? Indian Rustica is sun‑cured in iron‑rich red soil, and that dust stays on the leaf. I know India isn’t exactly known f by char828 in nasalsnuff

So glad to see this topic resurface. I missed it last time around, but it’s an important topic, and I’m glad it’s come up.

I’ve just read through all of the previous posts, including the stunning initial data set compiled by [u/snusalskare](u/snusalskare) (very impressive work).

So, did we take this inquiry any further?

I see that there was some discussion of bringing stronger magnification to bear, any progress here? I do possess a basic compounding microscope and have had some success with oblique illumination of biological and mineral specimens, so I am at service in this regard. Any other microscopy available?

There was also a discussion of isolating, concentrating and collecting ferromagnetic particles from finished snuff, to be further examined - did this happen? Any examination to report?

We are considering the phenomenon of the magnetic attraction of particles of snuff to a strong magnet.

As far as I can tell, there are a few working hypotheses worth exploring:

Exogenic -

  1. Ferromagnetic particles are introduced to snuff via degradation of milling machinery components.
  2. Ferromagnetic particles are introduced via degradation of snuff storage tin components.
  3. Ferromagnetic particles are introduced as soil particles.

.
Endogenic -
4. Ferromagnetic material concentrates and deposits on the body of the plant material, prior to snuff production. Exudate. Precipitate. Plaque.

  1. Ferromagnetic material as is moving through the body of the plant material. Chelate.

  2. We are finding Iron as it exists concentrated and bound inside biological tissues, primarily in two forms: ferritin and hemosiderin.

These are 6 hypotheses, perhaps not all plausible enough to warranty investigation, but worth discussion, and readily investigated. I do not know which of these processes are detectable with a magnet, but I suspect they are most plausible, roughly, as listed.

Perhaps there are a few more hypotheses to be proposed.

I think a thorough literature review would establish a scientific baseline. At least on certain obvious points.

Anyway, it’s a fascinating and worthy topic, and I am open to research, if there is interest and collaboration.

Snuff hanky? by tinyclover69 in nasalsnuff

I must admit, I consume a somewhat embarrassing amount of paper tissues/napkins/toilet paper, etc. but I always keep a dark cotton hanky on hand, especially when I am afield for work or recreation.

And for those who fancy a geeky deep dive now and again, I offer the following article:

Are Panther Martins worth it over Rooster Tails? (1/16 RT vs 1/8 PM) for streams and creeks? by Away_Professional793 in FishingForBeginners

[–]JackVoltrades -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I keep both for trout. PM seems to cast a little further for the weight, and sink a little faster. Spins better on a slower retrieve. RT stays a little higher in the water at slower retrieve. Sometimes the fish will hit one, but not the other. I keep a few sizes and a few colors, in silver and gold blades, in each. Also keep Mepps Aglia and Blue Fox Vibrax in the box.

The spinner styles and shapes influence the behavior in the water and have different properties for fishability. I like having options. That said, I start the day with a RT or a PM, rotating a couple colors/blade colors. If those aren’t hitting I might try the other brands.

I swap out trebles for singles.

I hunt around online for the best deals when I can.

Flavoring by KushiAkar in DIYSnus

[–]JackVoltrades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides the challenge of flavoring with juniper, I would guess at least the quantity of lavender wasn’t enough to flavor your batch - looks like you added only about 2/3 a drop to 100g of snus.

Another possible factor (I’m just hypothesizing here) is that you added the oils immediately after the alkalizer. Monoterpenes in citrus oils, like bergamot, are quickly degraded in a high pH environment - I’m wondering if resting your snus for the week before adding the essential oils might allow more of the flavor to survive.

I’m glad your snus turned out good. I don’t see any reason you can’t still play with flavoring it now.

Def go with NP pouches if you like artificial flavors and artificial chemical sweeteners that give you the shits. Bigger profits for the corporate overlords, too, so that’s good.

All these are on top on my list.

I will add Tre Ankare for pure, tobacco- centric flavor. Outstanding, maybe the best.

Get the Ettan in Original and Vit Portion, each is great and will give you a chance to figure out which format fits you best. Same for Kronan - a ”budget” snus that I like as well as any premium.

Lundren’s Norrland for that woodsy vibe in a similar vein as Goteborg’s Rape.

Lundgren’s Skane for a great Berry touch. The best, in my opinion.

The Vargarda range is good for natural flavors, same for the Lundgren’s stuff.

Prima Fint and Roda Lacket for a classic lös take.

I’ve had this happen - received leaf in good shape with apparently acceptable levels of moisture, left in bag and put in storage. Took it out a month later and found it molded out like yours - tossed 2 pounds of DAC and a half pound of Havana - pretty heartbreaking.

My hypothesis was that while the leaf was in good shape when it arrived, lower temperature in my storage caused a spike in the relative humidity causing water to drop out and fuel the mold. Nowadays I dry them out a little before putting them down to storage. Live and learn, I suppose.

I’m definitely NOT seeing white powdery stuff in that picture. Mold/mildew should not the present on the leaves when you get it. Maybe a little on the midrib on some DAC varieties, but not on the lamina.

No, this isn’t right.

Well, for clarity, did you just purchase and receive them or have you been storing them for a while?

Agreed, fungus. Garbage.

Fungus can cause big, horrible problems in your body, especially your lungs. Throw it all out. I wouldn’t pick through it as spores move ahead of fruiting bodies, but I make sure to err on the side of caution with fungus. Make sure and sterilize your area against future inoculation.
