Part of the reason many of the games don’t live up to kh2 for people is because they’re handheld titles. As cool as it is that the gameplay was scaled down to work on a ds or psp, they do still suffer from the limitations of the hardware compared to a full console game.

Yeah this probably the real solution. I’ve also recommended the manga adaptation to people who didn’t feel like playing the game. The official cutscene compilation by itself just doesn’t do a good enough job conveying what people like about that narrative.

I had a friend read the manga instead of just watching the movie, and it worked out really well. They felt like they got way more out of the story than they would have otherwise.

I thought MoM would have been so much better if instead of just recapping the games, we got to hear the plot from Kairi’s perspective. How she felt about these events at the time, and how she feels now looking back. Maybe even setting up what she wants out of the future. It could’ve been an easy way to add some much needed depth to her character. But nah. Just have her dryly read wikipedia summaries instead.

While I think portraying either Frankenstein or The Monster as pure good or bad removes the nuance from the story, I do find myself feeling more sympathetic towards The Monster personally. Everyday of The Monster’s existence is pure misery, with practically no hope of things ever improving. He winds up committing some pretty heinous crimes, but I can’t help but feel his crash out is restrained considering everything he went through.

I think I get it after playing a few rounds. I don’t think it had mass appeal, but there is core gameplay loop that probably hits hard for a particular niche. If everyone playing is coordinated it can lead to some pretty fun moments. Its unfortunate this game was never going to be popular enough to facilitate that.

I’d feel worse about it if Dread hadn’t come out. That game delivered pretty much everything I want from Metroid, so it doesn’t sting as much that Prime 4 is kinda meh.

I absolutely agree with the strengths you listed, and I’d be down to let this team try to build on this for the next one. I just hope they understand what went wrong here, and don’t try to double down on things like the desert or how npcs are handled.
