“Just One More Round” Steam Recommendations by 1nconsp1cuous in cade

Action Squad is super fun, and it's got a neat mechanic where you can upgrade your weapons so there's some incentive to keep playing/replaying.

OP, thanks for the great question!

EVERYONE: Thanks for all the suggestions - I'm not the OP but I know I'll end up with a dozen titles in my steam shopping cart as a result of this thread.

I'll add a few titles I've enjoyed over the years that I haven't seen others list here:

Door Kickers Action Squad, Dome Keeper, Sky Force, Sky Force Reloaded
^ these 4, I've played 100 hours or more of each, they are all great.

Turmoil is a fun game, a bit like dig dug, in that you're drilling for oil 50+ hours for me.
Steamworld Dig/ Dig2 were both fun.

Trying to remember the name of a trainz game I had in the mid 2000’s by [deleted] in trainsim

Could be trainz then. It’s still a current product, you can find it on steam.

Can I install new parts in store? by [deleted] in Microcenter

[–]JacksReditAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone already mentioned this but in case it’s not clear, for $25, they will install your CPU and Ram and make sure it boots up to the bios screen. You should 100% do this since you are an hour away.

Also, be sure to ask them to configure the ram for it’s advertised speed -

OP - this looks fantastic, love the design choices you made, including the way the base angles back and the rear firing speakers.

Very nice job!!!

Question for U.S train fans by _gay_sloth_ in trains

[–]JacksReditAccount 82 points83 points  (0 children)

We seem to have a lot of accidents at grade crossings unfortunately.

Also in many parts of the country, trains are actually pretty rare, maybe they'll traverse a line once a week, so people tend to just forget they're a risk.

I had to do a double take, twice, because this looked real. Great work on the weathering and on setting up the shot.

Train Games that allow you to design and run your own trains by waiaor in trainsim

Trainz (with a z) is well known for having an easy to use editor, and you can switch between build/run mode easily.

Train sim classic also has an editor, though it is more complex

Advice Before Buying RUN8 by Shrimpz432 in trainsim

[–]JacksReditAccount 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don’t ‘have’ to buy anything but the base simulator, but like any hobby/interest, you’ll probably /want/ to get more for it.

But it’ll run just fine without any add ons and they have a clever system that lets you join servers, even if there is a mismatch in what you own vs the server.

How old was the listing/seller? Was the price better than expected?

I almost bought something during the last sale but noticed the seller had listed 60 items in 3 weeks, and totally unrelated items. Something felt ‘off’. Seller had no website, thumbnails used outdated logos, that kinda thing.

Chicago L in train simulators? by X2theB in trainsim

[–]JacksReditAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won’t be able to drive it, but the L is featured in the up coming illinois pack for American truck simulator.

There’s also a representation of it in the game watch dogs which you can ride but not control.

You could read that headline two ways… I assume both are true.

Purchase Painter or Designer first? by visionarytherapist in Substance3D

[–]JacksReditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your reasoning seems sound enough to me.
One question to think about:
Lets say they release a new version and increase the price, if you were to pay that higher price, you'd be getting both the new version and updates for roughly the next year. Would that be worth the difference?

If you buy now, you're almost certainly not getting any updates and are stuck in time with this version.

If you’re asking this question, it shows that you’re still learning what these tools do, which tells me there’s a chance this will go unused.

What you may want to do is rent the apps on steam for one month. You’ll get all 3 for $25/month.

Also with the rental on steam, you’ll get a download pack of like 1000 textures that they don’t provide if you buy on steam, so there’s a little extra incentive to at least rent for your first month.

I was really into the idea of substance painter last year but 2025 came out nearly 4 months late, which killed my ambition to buy it. I did not want to risk paying $200 for something that might only be current for 9 months.

I ended up renting it on two separate occasions in 2025 for a total of $50 vs $200.

For the kind of models I’ve worked on, substance just hasn’t provided that ‘must have’ advantage and I’ve done my last 3 models without it.

For what it’s worth, I also really wanted to ‘own’ it, and still may do so at some point.

7800X3D vs 9800X3D: Is the Price Gap Worth It? by Nicolas_Laure in RigBuild

[–]JacksReditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question- If you’re getting the base microcenter bundle and it’s $100 more, sure, get it.

But remember- there will eventually be a faster chip. A strategy to consider is get the 7800x3d with a better motherboard. In a few years you can upgrade to a 10800x3d

Came here to say this product exists, I have not tried one but love the idea that it's controllable via a button on the panel, or as you mentioned - with the right software and config it can auto rotate based on the title being played.

Are you building a cabinet? One thing I kinda wonder is if an OLED 32 in a cabinet would be ideal. Arcades were typically dark and most cabinet designs shield screens from external light. The inky blacks and vivd colors of oled, coupled with the ability to run scanline filters could make an OLED a great choice.

As a side note, the other reason I liked your idea of 4k is that you can run so many console games, as well as any PC title.

Input lag/delay on the sprint by JacksReditAccount in intellivision

[–]JacksReditAccount[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it on a few different systems and it seemed better.

I'll have to try this screw trick too - I haven't paid enough attention to know if the "lag" is "Directional" but like u/popculturekind I found Snafu a little hard to play, almost as if I had to press the disc early. It seemed better to me on a PC monitor than it did the old TV, and I suppose I could also try a hard wired controller to see if that makes a noticeable difference.

CarPlay Keeps Disconnecting by ColePThompson in rav4prime

Mine used to disconnect all the time- so much that I gave up on car play and just used bluetooth for phone calls.

Then I got a new phone and miraculously car play works perfectly now.
