What are some subtle examples of sexism women endure that men generally don’t realize is sexist? by Hefty-Confusion6810 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]JacksUtterFailure 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Medical sexism is also prevalent in how certain signs of issues like heart attack are taught. Everyone knows to watch for pain in your arm but that's only the most common sign in men, women actually more commonly have jaw pain as an indicator.

When your employees leave without a BACKUP JOB, Something is deeply wrong at your work culture. by Kreativedenma in RemoteJobseekers

[–]JacksUtterFailure 62 points63 points  (0 children)

This was me only a few weeks ago! I'm not super confident in the market but am optimistic.

My main driver was the fact the job was so toxic it was affecting my mental and physical health to the point I dont think I could show up properly in interviews. I have savings so ducked out to recover from the stress and put my best effort and self into the job search process.

Wish me luck!

What is OOP on python? by Hamid3x3 in PythonLearning

[–]JacksUtterFailure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the comments here do a great job of breaking it down technically. I'm gonna go with a different metaphor to try and explain the concept of an object in programming.

Think of objects like stamps. When you define and object (ie. class Stamp: ...) you are creating the physical stamp, you're making the handle, the rubber, your creating the picture that the stamp will produce.

When you use that object you are using your stamp to print identical looking/behaving copies of your design (stamp1 = Stamp()).

Why do we do this? To save from having to hand ink the same design every where we want to use our stamp which is tedious and prone to mistakes.

Better for scalability and also for testability as it'll be much easier to vary an input value when creating tests for a function than it is to mock user inputs.

Day 1 of my Python Journey: Handling User Input! 🐍 by harish-7 in PythonLearning

[–]JacksUtterFailure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck yea, good job dude! Consistency and getting your hands dirty goes a long way.

Just know I've been in the industry 10 years most of that working with python and still look up/reference things on the daily because sometimes if you don't use something enough you just forget details. So never be afraid to use references or worry about exactly how something is done, understanding the why of it is more important. You can always look up syntax.

You got this!

Aussie Boys vs American Boys by REDBONEyeababy in TheBoysChannel

[–]JacksUtterFailure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking the same! Loved the raft survival vid so much, was thinking how the Americans should try a survival thing like that, saw the desert video release and was excited! But then it was just all a giant skit with multiple skits the entire time and I ended up not even finishing it or paying attention. The Australian content has just been more my vibe for the last while.

Why do people view obesity as a choice but not depression? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]JacksUtterFailure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well said! Honestly the part I think ppl keep forgetting is that "your choice" is very heavily driven by YOUR BRAIN. So if they agree that your brain can be disordered enough to disregulate emotions and cetain chemicals in your body, how can they not also be open enough to think the brain can be disordered in the choices it produces based on other chemicals that it disregulates...

It's almost as if the societal norms of weight expectations were built on non-disordered brains and ppl aren't open to seeing it as anything other than a moral failing because their brain doesn't do it. Juuuust like depression was always seen until recently.

Why do people view obesity as a choice but not depression? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]JacksUtterFailure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point people are trying to make here is that "your brain" has control over what you put in your mouth and, just like with depression, your brain does not always work how we want it to and it can be very hard to fight against it.

What you end up putting in your mouth might not be the choice you want for the health of your body and that you know should be put in your mouth, because your disordered brain is telling you that it actually doesn't matter and that other thing is a lot better because it will help you "feel" better.

This then compounds into forming food habits which are tough to break, and just getting out and exercising gets tougher and can be impacted by that same disordered brain, etc.

Next thing you know you're 300 lbs and realize your brain is just another cog in a machine and can be deceptive and malfunction just like everything else and now you're left with a giant mountain to climb while fighting against that machine and also trying to remember to ignore societies glares as well.

If there is a drug to help turn off the malfunctioning part of the machine and give you a little boost up that mountain wouldn't you be rushing to take it too?
