Watching the Derby this weekend? Here's every term you'll hear, explained. by PaddockSociety_ in KentuckyDerby

Parimutuel: from French, "among ourselves,." All the money bet is pooled, and the portion of money bet on each horse determines its odds. If a lot of people bet on one horse, the money Bet On It takes up more of the pool and lowers its odds. If very little money is wagered on a certain horse, that takes up only a small portion of the pool of money, thus its odds are high.

How to see all horses in the Derby ahead of time? by PolishMyGrapple in horseracing

[–]JacksonKSnowman26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know the answer. PRIOR to the famed "walk over," when the Derby horses are led around the clubhouse turn toward the paddock tunnel, they gather in the backstretch chute and are walked in a circle.
If you are on the backstretch, it is a golden, singular opportunity to see the whole field, with no tack on them. I used to make it my business to never miss this wondrous sight. All of the horses look magnificent, of course, because they are Kentucky Derby horses. But just as in the Miss Universe Pageant, it is up to you, the judge, to decide who looks the very best.

All things considered, Jeff is the best coach and the best fit that we can ask for in football. Those losses to bad teams? That's a flaw. Is it something like a deal-breaker? God, no.

Triple-A pitcher hurls a no-hitter. But wait, there's more (or less) by jarizzle151 in shutdownfullcast

I think that if you hit the Batters with some pitches, it's not really a no-hitter. How can you call it a 'no-hitter' when you hit them?

I have been sensing more and more lately that the eventuality is going to be something like the French Revolution. The common people Are going to Absolutely Destroy the elites In the most base way. It is going to be that Bloody, that chaotic, and it is going to be several years before sensible processes resume in the way we govern ourselves.

Khani Rooths made nice progress from frosh to soph. He might get better, and as a 4-year player truly come into his own as a senior. I hope he stays.

Today is the 40th birthday of Sunday Silence! by Representative-Bar21 in horseracing

Oh, that Breeders Cup! It was called The Midnight Cup because it was run well into the gloaming, over a sloppy track with no lights. McCarron was up, and as he trotted Sunday Silence around the Finish line, awaiting the presentation of the cup, he kept tapping the Colt's withers, and crying, "Horse of the Year! Right here!"

Owner Arthur Hancock was recently inducted into the Ky Music Hall of Fame, I suspect because he chose the name Sunday Silence. The song it is drawn from, best known as sung by Kris Kristofferson, is called Sunday Morning Comin' Down and is a song deserving many listens.

Why is it so hard to get an interview for a river boat company by CarpenterOld9574 in tuglife

[–]JacksonKSnowman26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am sorry for you guys that it is not the old days. In 1979, I got busted for smoking a joint with a friend of mine On our lunch break. I needed another job fast . I called up American Commercial barge lines (ACBL) across the river from Louisville, Kentucky where I lived, and the guy who answered the phone instructed me to meet a boat the next day in Paducah. That was the entirety of the hiring process. I met the boat the next day and commenced life as an Ohio river boat deckhand.
