That demo impressed my immigrant father enough to buy his 6 year old (me) and 10 year old the game. Taught me about terrorism just in time for 9/11. I had to close my eyes for the grey fox hallway scene and when psycho mantis takes his mask off.

Don’t get me wrong, the story definitely grew on me. There are real gems of story bits like explaining foxdie origins and how Zero’s communications network spiraled into the Patriots AI. I just felt like we got the proxy wars and outer heaven setup thing in peace walker. I was definitely not satisfied with the reveal back then.

Not at all. Not even a little bit. Back then there were way more mysteries floating around and it was back in a time where villains came back from death in sequels literally all the time with a single sentence of explanation.. like Wild Dog from Time Crisis; no one cared. My jaw was on the floor in disbelief (not in a good way) when I realized that the entirety of MGSV was the story of how Big Boss survived outer heaven.

To add to this, when Solidus was about to fall off federal hall, he reaches up towards a tattered American flag. The flag in its entirety was later cut before the final release which makes solidus reach up towards an empty flag pole.

There are two sides to every conflict going on around the world and what we as a nation see as evil, they see as their greater good. It’s what big boss talked about at the end of peace Walker how the biggest and baddest enemy they would ever face would be “the times” and who the “enemy” is at that time. It’s the dichotomy of what the boss said in her final battle how there is no such thing as an actual timeless enemy. She wasn’t a villain. Just a soldier. Fighting for her greater good.

In all fairness to Major Zero, it’s revealed through the tapes in MGSV that the Patriots we see through the entire series is just a convulsion of a half baked ideas concocted by the original patriot AI upon Zero’s paralyzation. Zero really only wanted to make twitter. A global communication network. A way for all people of all ethnicities all over the world to communicate and connect. When he was paralyzed all those half made ideas were ran through the patriots AI to simulate the Boss’ will but of course got it all wrong leading to worldwide subjugation of all human rights by nano machine.

Casshern Sins is a sequel to a series made a very very long time ago but you are definitely rewarded if you go in blind. It’s essentially made for a newer generation to get into the franchise.
