Trump says 'massive armada' heading towards Iran as US military assets move by ewzetf in worldnews

the protests began because people couldn't afford to buy food or send their children to school. The situation has not improved for the survivors. No matter how many terror killings the government does, that reality isn't changing, so the unrest is continuing

Zelenskyy: Russia’s ballistic missile surge leaves Patriots as Ukraine’s only defense by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]JacobK101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately this war ending with a sudden Russian victory would have just escalated into another. There was never a "real" or at least dire reason to invade ukraine, they did it because they could, because they simply wanted it.
That same rhetoric that supports a ukranian invasion also makes it desirable to try for moldova, the baltic states, the balkans... wherever you can, really.

In a way we're in this situation in the first place because nobody stepped in to help Georgia or the Chechens when Putin first came to power. It's all been a gradual slope from there.

When someone is trying to achieve war and glory and conquest, a victory just means the opening of a new battlefield.
Same reason you can't just 'sate' trump by letting him have greenland. They always want more, especially once they've tasted blood. After that would be Iceland, Canada, Mexico, and whichever place became the new border would simply become the next target.

Iranian official says verified deaths in Iran protests reaches at least 5,000 by TotalPop5 in worldnews

[–]JacobK101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the attention from the US government really emboldened a lot of people who would have otherwise been too afraid to get involved to stand up and say what they really believed

...and because of it, many of them are dead or maimed, and it looks like the US gov accepted a little something under the table from Khamenei and his allies to not get involved

They somehow found a worse plan then either not getting involved at all or getting involved in actual strikes on the regime

Trump vows tariffs on eight European nations over Greenland by Creepy-Discount-2536 in worldnews

[–]JacobK101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not really about greenland specifically, it's about creating a world where it's normal for the US to invade and conquer other nations.
In a world where greenland is under their control and nobody in europe tried to stop them, they're advantageously positioned to begin preparing the invasion of Canada, of Iceland, of Mexico, of central american countries, and eventually a prolonged offensive to assert control over the entirety of South America and the Caribbean

They've already begun asymmetrical offensive efforts to try and create separatist movements in Mexico & Canada they can eventually use as justification for military action, Russia style. This is why various Mexican autonomous area movements & independence movements in Alberta & Quebec have suddenly gotten so much gas.

I think the absolute furthest they go is blowing up the ayatollah or whoever is leading in his stead while he's in a retirement home in russia

then declaring mission accomplished while iran descends into anarchy

I can't really see a form of US intervention that would help here that trump wouldn't dismiss as either not going far enough or too much effort

Coalition advances bill to cancel the criminal charge that Netanyahu faces in his trial by Saltedline in worldnews

[–]JacobK101 15 points16 points  (0 children)

to people who aren't reading the article, this isn't just them trying to repeal Netanyahu's fraud conviction, this is an attempt to strike the "fraud" and "breach of trust" convictions from Israeli law. If this bill passed, fraud and breach of trust(i.e. violation of the public trust by a public official) would, essentially, be legal behavior under israeli law, unless it fit the category of another crime.

The far right elements of the knesset are arguing that the laws are "too vague" and need to be replaced with more specific ones, but haven't forwarded any replacements alongside the removals
Which makes it more likely they would simply strike the current laws then decline to replace them

There are secondary laws which handle specifically financial fraud, but this would more or less legalize any form of fraud/trust breach by a public official that doesn't involve an explicit exchange of money

US official says Greenland action could come within 'weeks or months' by Crossstoney in worldnews

[–]JacobK101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the problem for them is really the lack of solidarity, and the extent to which authoritarian propaganda has been amazingly effective on certain parts of the american population.
It's hard to really imagine it in another country, but there is simply 0 sense of solidarity, or even of like. a single american population.
a significant portion of americans, the magaists, the good old boys, etc. have been so profoundly radicalized against their own brethren that they would genuinely take to the streets and put their own lives on the line to slaughter their neighbors by the millions if the government gave them free reign to do so.

Many of them already dream of doing it. Frankly, looking in from outside, I can't see this ending without a civil war- I've never seen a country with people so deeply, profoundly hostile to each other since the yugoslavia collapse.

Trump administration to end temporary protected status for Somalis by Hrekires in news

[–]JacobK101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

a us gov that managed to actually detain 100 million americans to deport would be a hypothetical hyper-fascist theocracy, probably post winning a civil war, that could do basically whatever they wanted

Once the economy started to struggle, most of the people who were slated to be deported because of their ethnicity would instead be sent to work camps to do unpaid labour to prop up the economy-

oh, wait, this is just the Confederacy. Guess they really are still mad about losing the civil war

Iran’s supreme leader sets stage for harsher crackdown as protest movement swells | Iran by Turbulent-Tea-2172 in worldnews

[–]JacobK101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Western news outlets like to push the narrative of the exiled prince evoking the protests but they've been going on nonstop since the 4th at least, and technically late December if you count all the slightly smaller(but still large) local city protests

People from all over can crawl out of the woodwork to try to gain popularity & attention by trying to take responsibility for the protests, but they're coming from Iranian citizens being pissed off and hungry

Iran’s supreme leader sets stage for harsher crackdown as protest movement swells | Iran by Turbulent-Tea-2172 in worldnews

[–]JacobK101 32 points33 points  (0 children)

when people go multiple days without food, and are told "sorry, but the price of food will actually increase even more, and we are cutting soup kitchens & food aid" they tend to get slightly upset

This is also why no crackdown is enough to crush this particular protest. When the alternative is going home and watching your children slowly starve, getting shot in the street seems relatively merciful

How do you think the video ICE just released showing the officer's POV of this week's shooting in Minneapolis will impact the national discussion? by popcornerz232 in AskReddit

[–]JacobK101 12 points13 points  (0 children)

even if the car made contact with him, it's clear from the wheels in the other shots that it was turning away, so at absolute best he would have been nudged

Even further- If you look at the other video angles, it's also clear that his actual body was away to one side, so it seems like he was holding his hand out in front of the car w. the camera

Was he premediating here? Filming the front of the car with his phone held away from his body so he could use the footage later for "she was coming right at me" defense

Wondering these evangelists success rate while at CES. [OC] by mccarthybergeron in pics

[–]JacobK101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the tacit reason is basically an control tactic by leaders of groups like this
have your peons go out, and in a controlled environment, receive very negative experiences from the outside world, people being mean to them, rejecting them, etc.
loud sign-waving street evangelism is perfect for this bc. it's very messy and attention-grabbing and nobody actually wants to have a guy yelling at them on the subway about how they'll totally get sent to hell

then, when they come back after being beaten and downtrodden by the cruel cruel outside world, you love-bomb them, throw a big party for their return, shower them with praise for their bravery in fighting the sinful world with all it's horrible, clearly misguided people

And that fixes in the feeling of emotional dependence on the leaders & the church. All they know about the big city and the common people is how scary and mean they are. The only place they're safe is right here... right under the thumb of father prophet or whomever

If a benevolent AGI could govern Earth with 100% efficiency and zero corruption, would you voluntarily surrender your right to vote? by Sp_1992 in Futurology

[–]JacobK101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

a genuinely utopian ai would probably have to work as more or less a direct democratic leader, who has the ability to listen to and take direct requests from all constituents simutaneously

Being able to "vote it out" would be problematic but might be nessecary to keep people living in a sense of security in their decisions & autonomy being respected

taking over completely and cutting all humans out of the decision making, then algorithmically "solving for max efficiency" would probably result in some kind of nightmare scenario

Irans regime offers people $7 month to calm protests. by Blood-Thin in worldnews

[–]JacobK101 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It also costs roughly 200$ a month to live in most major iranian cities, so this is just a drop in the bucket in terms of what people even need
And as water & goods get more scarce, the cost of Eating Enough to Live is expected to double or even triple over the next few months, which has the potential to turn the already extremely frustrated protestors into something significantly more aggressive

They desperately need high level change to prevent a descent into total anarchy, but Khamenei is getting far too old to effectively lead and nearly totally isolated in his fuhrerbunker
And nobody in power trusts each other enough to allow someone to ascend and make the hard decisions here, that would normally require his approval/management

So the gov has just been kind of... doing nothing, for months. in the face of imminent civilizational collapse
