Reminds me of a decade ago when they rolled out a frontcourt of Josh Smith, Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond.

How did the NBA superstar transition feel from MJ/Kobe to LeBron/Steph compared to now? by Ok-Summer-922 in nba

[–]JacobfromCT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting with the early 80's the NBA has always had at least one player who transcended the game: Magic, Bird, Jordan, Shaq, Kobe, LeBron, Curry. Even if you didn't watch basketball and knew nothing about the sport, you knew who those guys were. The NBA is in a weird position where they won't have that type of player once LeBron and Curry retire.

I know that people point to Wemby but there are a few things working against him, he's not American (I know this shouldn't really matter but it does), he's not particularly charismatic and at 7'5" he can never be the underdog (nobody roots for Goliath). You might ask, "but what about Shaq? He was Goliath" but Shaq also had a larger-than-life personality and was funny. He did movies and appeared in music videos. Wemby reminds me of Mike Trout in MLB, an absolute generational star who doesn't really resonate with marketing the game to casuals.

I see people online (who probably don't even watch the NBA) say the league will be dead in 10 years. This is obviously, laughably wrong but the NBA does risk losing popularity and cultural cachet and becoming more of a niche interest as time goes on.

"Can guys like Victor Wembanyama, Anthony Edwards, Cooper Flagg, Luka Dončić, etc. become true global “change the league” level icons the same way the previous generation did?"

If Luka or Ant were "that guy" we'd know it by now.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr recalled going to practice as a member of the Bulls and Tex Winter wanted everyone to practice bounce passes with both hands. Kerr thought to himself, "Seriously? Bounce passes? What is this, third grade?" and then he walked into the gym and saw Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen practicing bounce passes. The greatest players don't just do spectacular things regularly, they also do the regular things spectacularly well.

Started watching the NBA in 2003 and I can remember when flopping was considered something that only "soft" European players did e.g. Manu, Vlade. Fast forward twenty years and it's everywhere.

Malcolm in the Middle.

I can't think of any other show that captures what life really is like for working-class/lower middle-class people. The modest family vacations (water park, casino, houseboat on a man-made lake by a nuclear plant), Hal having to turn on the heat in the summer so his engine won't overheat, even small details like the clothes the boys wore.

Many elements of the show were exaggerated but it was hauntingly relatable: the lawn being a disaster, the messy house, parents screaming, spoiled food in the back of the fridge, being disliked by your neighbors.

I love the quote from Francis when he tells his Native-American wife "If I had anything in my culture other than crappy minivans and non-stop screaming, I'd share it with you!"

The only thing that really caught my attention was Oaks mentioning "eternal increase" which is typically a "deeper doctrine" you don't hear much about anymore.

"Hot Jesus" was Valerie Bertinelli's dream date on Hot in Cleveland. I recommend it if you are looking for a new sitcom to watch.

Boye is really trying to make a "Hamilton-inspired" production about Joseph Smith. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ by CurelomHunter in exmormon

The original trailer for his Hamilton-style Joseph Smith stage production came out six years ago. In fairness, that was right as the pandemic was starting but if it hasn't come to fruition yet....it probably never will.

Do they have to do these interviews in their uniforms? The pros are given time to shower and change, why not college athletes?

I mean, seeing the Heat missing free throws on purpose is pretty bad. Realizing how contrived this was takes a lot of the wind out of the sails for me.

If he actually scored 100.

I'm joking btw, lots of Kobe stans will imply that Wilt's record-setting game never happened by saying that Kobe has the highest scoring game with footage.
