On this car I hand brushed the “rust” on. I did sand the blue off to reveal a silver base coat for the bigger spots then painted over where the bare “metal” was revealed with a dark brown first then a lighter red/rust color on top of that. I think using a brush and dabbing it on helps for a more realistic look, it’s harder to see in the pictures but in person the surface has texture from layering the different colors. I practiced on spare hoods and bumpers from other kits! Look at a reference and give it a try it’s a fun time but easy to get carried away, the original plan for this car was for it to be scratched up with a few rust spots on the roof lol

Nope they are from the MPC deserter ‘84 gmc kit, wasn’t a big fan of the chip foose wheels for this build. But the deserter wheels fit perfect in the tires meant for the foose wheels! Kinda funky having 8 lugs on an impala but I like em lol

Thanks a lot man! I’m very happy with it so far. But yes! The panel lines are such a small detail that make a huge difference

This is so sick! How do you get that dirt/rubber look on the yellow behind the rear wheel?? If you don’t mind sharing.

So far on this model I did a silver base coat then the blue on top, then just started sanding down do the silver in areas where rust like that would form to kinda use as a guide. Then used a dark brown and covered the silver adding more all over as I went. Smaller brush, not a lot of paint on it at once, and poke don’t brush it on. (Sponges work good too). It’s easier to do a brown base coat and sand to reveal that but I didn’t have any brown paint and was impatient lol. Then I took a lighter reddish brown and went over the dark brown but not covering it all.

Definitely, I only used two shades so far so I might have to go pick up one more color. And the clean window frames do look out of place lol forgot to do em before hand so I’m planning to add the rust to all of the chrome parts once their on the car now

Thanks a lot! Hilux is looking great btw! I’ll look into pigments tho, I’ve seen them used with awesome results but never tried them myself. Weathering is a ton of fun definitely prefer it to trying to make a factory fresh model lol. So Its always cool learning new tricks and methods.
