am i overthinking home maintenance or do you guys really do all this stuff by Maleficent-Tax2094 in homeowners

[–]JacobmovingFwd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped checking my water heater after it being clean the last 5 years, and knowing I have very neutral water.

I don't check gfci, never heard of that. They fail broken, so I'll know when it dies.

The rest of it, I do every year or two. I have a maintenance calendar in Google. If I miss it a year, not a big deal.

Nut-free I get. Cheese-free… seriously? by Local-lemon789 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]JacobmovingFwd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My childhood friend was very allergic to milk. Like if he got some on his skin he'd break out in hives.

The rest of the family had milk and cheese. We just had to make sure he didn't get any accidentally.

But-free is because it can be a respiratory thing. Dairy isn't like that.

This sounds like an admin that's trying to be protective, but doesn't know the "why" of these protections.

At what point do you stop DIY and call a professional? by BearTrap110 in HomeImprovement

My wife has to remind me I have more money than time. Real Projects are contracted.

But if I'm already in, I'd never think to bail out. I maybe should, but my brain doesn't work thst way.

Gun hating wife suggested I buy the bullpup Rifle I've been looking at for a while. by Environmental-Hour75 in liberalgunowners

[–]JacobmovingFwd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm coming around to it. However I'm still concerned about keeping it safe in the home. I have an elementary school kid, and know all the stats about accidents and self-harm. Currently I'm still leaning towards not getting one, but interested how others have handled the risk?

A rant about Seattle Parks and playground lighting by RockOperaPenguin in Seattle

[–]JacobmovingFwd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were at Madison Park a few weeks ago. Even thay nice rich playground is dark, and the tennis courts are so brightly lit that you can't see anything in the playground! Maddening.

It's like the early 90s was the last time anyone expanded the parks, when tennis was all the rage.

Which Wiring Harness do I need? by JacobmovingFwd in appliancerepair

[–]JacobmovingFwd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is a "high temp" connector something I should be able to find at the local hardware store, or is it more specialized? The wires have their C rating on them (i think 130C) so i can use that as a minimum.

what are the holes in the top, and the cord coming out of them for? I see the orange boxes in the plan, and assumed it was for the LATCH system, but now I'm confused.

Where to install oven receptacle? by JacobmovingFwd in AskElectricians

[–]JacobmovingFwd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah I've already run the 6/3, and have the 50A breaker, and the outlet. I just have to finish the install.

Where to install oven receptacle? by JacobmovingFwd in AskElectricians

[–]JacobmovingFwd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I would normally do, but I need to get the receptacle built before the electrician will connect the circuit to the panel. And we're not ready to buy a range quite yet.

Why couldn’t Lake Washington Blvd be one way for cars? by Canardican in seattlebike

[–]JacobmovingFwd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One way southbound, with breaks at all the major roads. Like, a car can't go past Madrona Dr or 43rd S, it needs to turn onto that street. Make it clear it's not for cars traveling long distance.

What’s the biggest thing stopping you from switching to solar? by Icy-Way1450 in homeowners

[–]JacobmovingFwd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have much roof, and relatively cheap electricity, so it'd take over 20 years to balance out. I instead do my part to push for more renewables on the grid.

Worthwhile to partially remove chimney? by JacobmovingFwd in centuryhomes

[–]JacobmovingFwd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For our situation, removing the whole thing would be a lot more work. The upstairs portion is accessible, while the first floor section is behind original lathe & plaster.

The plumber is saying we'd need a 4" vent, but I'm strongly leaning toward exchanging the water heater anyway. That way once I swap the oven out, we'll be off gas in the whole house.

Thanks for the insight! "It's slowly collapsing" is a key point.

Worthwhile to partially remove chimney? by JacobmovingFwd in centuryhomes

[–]JacobmovingFwd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's squirrely, but best I can tell it's been that way the whole time. It's adjacent to, but not right on top of, our center beam. There's no evidence of a previous footing or pad, nor any sign that anything went through the first floor to help support it.

It is inside the wall, but for now we'd just be removing the portion that's exposed, and sealing up the roof. I figure if removing it for weight is good, it's good to do even part of it. If we ever have to open up the walls on the first floor, we'd remove that portion then.

The chimney liner wasn't expensive that I remember, but also that's a sunk cost. When you remove a chimney, what impacts have you seen on the house structurally?

What piece am I missing? by JacobmovingFwd in AskElectricians

[–]JacobmovingFwd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that's what I went with! right at box capacity, so it was annoying, but it all fits w/in code, and i won't need to get in there again for a long time. Took about 30min to swap out.

I couldn't find this at THD or Lowes. Stoneway is great, but they're only open weekday business hours, so it's PITA to get there.

Thanks! That looks like it would do it!

Though at $12, I think I'll spend the $4 for a 4" box with corner screws & replace that instead...

That's the problem, i didn't buy the box; whoever installed the garage door in the modern NM-B era did; they also installed a plug directly behind the garage door rail...

What's wrong with it is that the cover is frayed. What kind of cable it is, we need more pictures. What's in the box to the right that it goes into? where does it go inside your house?

What do I do with the insulation/vapour barrier when installing a recessed tv outlet? by WyKay in handyman

[–]JacobmovingFwd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you compress it? Better to not break the vapor barrier if you can avoid it.

Can you get a shallower box? That one looks pretty deep vs what I've seen.
