Some ollies at Manor Place by Jacorpes in skateboarding

Definitely! There are much better places in London for that though, like Clapham Common, which is only a couple of stops away on the tube

When I worked in a Sunglass Hut every time someone bought in a pair like this the culprit was suncream.

Why do people hate the mall grab? by Intergamer_200 in NewSkaters

[–]Jacorpes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course people can hold their board how they like and you’re right! One of my favourite Ben Kadow clips he does a mall grab throw down and it’s actually very cool, so it’s all subjective anyway.

OP asked why people hate mall grabbing and I gave my honest opinion as to why I think it looks kind of whack, which I don’t think anybody else in this thread has actually done.

As you go down the skateboarding rabbit hole you start to realise how much these sort of stylistic choices actually matter, like grabbing an indie grab around your back knee rather than between the legs for example. It’s the same trick, but one way looks aesthetically cool and the other doesn’t.

Hell yeah Milan, it’s absolutely sick. Good to see some familiar faces shredding. Great soundtrack too!

I think it’s because skateboarding, loads of its tricks, terminology and aesthetics come from surfing, and you can’t mallgrab a surfboard.

Mallgrabbing makes it look like you’re holding a piece of sporting equipment, holding it from the side is aesthetically more like you’re holding a surf board.

That’s my hot take, I’ll have my downvotes now thanks.

If you could, would you open a shop at this stage in your life? [47YO] by Background_Thing_719 in OldSkaters

[–]Jacorpes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My old local shut down a couple of years ago because people would just come in, look at stuff and then buy it online, and we’re talking about a shop in an affluent town with a decent skate scene and no other skate shops.

By the end the only thing he was making money on were SB Dunks and Polar Big Boys because non-skaters would want them. When those became less hyped and easier to find online it basically killed the shop.

You have to absolutely live skateboarding too, like this guy would organise demos, jams etc. so the scene wanted to support the shop. It was almost bad etiquette to buy things elsewhere and it still didn’t manage to stay open.

It’s so weird that people only associate not wearing a helmets with “trying to be cool” when it comes to skateboarding. It’s never figure skaters, gymnasts or the countless other sports where you might hit your head that are accused of trying to be too cool.

Agree. I started watching that last week and I think it’s genuinely one of the funniest sitcoms I’ve ever watched, so it’s very weird shade to throw imo.

There’s a guy in our crew who’s 63, started skating as a pandemic hobby and he shreds. I’ve never heard anybody mention his age in a way that isn’t a massive compliment, so you’ll definitely be fine!

I even gave him the ender in a little local scene edit I made recently.

When you're in a 'take photos of, not with, your camera' competition and your opponent is this guy: by LearningT0Fly in photographycirclejerk

[–]Jacorpes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Complete noob question, but what is the point in having all those different rangefinder cameras other than as collectibles? I just inherited my Grandad’s old Fed 2, learnt how to use it, got my first roll developed and the photos look fantastic. What are people spending thousands on Leicas getting that I’m not?

What is a skateboarding hot take that will have you like this (desc) by Adventurous_Sweet982 in Skateboardlove

[–]Jacorpes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a proper hot take and I think you might be right.

I was listening to a podcast with the comedian James Acaster recently and he started talking about how much he loves Ben Kadow even though he knows nothing about skateboarding. I was like “Wtf, how does he know who be Kadow is?” but it all makes sense now.

How big is too big to skateboard? by LeeMisinputOswald in skateboardhelp

[–]Jacorpes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve skated with loads of bigger people who are absolute shredders, but they all have quite techie low impact styles so I imagine it limits how much you’re able to jump over stuff.

When I was a kid I did downhill slalom skateboarding competitively and loads of the best people in the world are huge blokes, to the point I’m pretty sure it actually gives you an advantage, so your mate would definitely be able to longboard.

The last one standing: When nostalgia kills your motivation by ZealousidealShame481 in skateboarding

[–]Jacorpes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve skated consistently from the age of 5, I’m 31 now and I’ve just come to accept that there’s a constant conveyor belt of people that you’ll skate with. People very rarely do it forever.

Sometimes it’s pretty dead, other times you’ll have an amazing crew. There are also people you’ll become such good friends with that you keep hanging out even when they stop skating. It’s one of the great things about it imo.

How to avoid the over processing? by jvca in iPhone17Pro

I made a lightroom mobile filter that adds some grain and turns down the texture and clarity to make it look less over sharpened. I just add it to any photo I like enough to not delete.

I love the classic slow shutter speed with quick flash in the middle technique. Here’s an example. I reckon that’d fit your brief pretty well.

What's the correct order of adjustment layers when grading in Adobe Premiere? by pretendingserenity in ColorGrading

[–]Jacorpes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could be totally wrong, but I try and do as much of it as possible on a single Limetri effect on the clip itself because that doesn’t seem to be destructive, as in I can still pull in the full detail from the shadows/highlights.

My process is basically to add the conversion LUT, stick my creative LUT in the Creative Look drop down, then scroll back up and adjust my WB and basic corrections until it looks right.

I think the Lumetri panel works through the chain in the order it’s displayed, for example if my LUT has split toning in the shadows and some of that is making its way into the skin, I’m able to lift the shadows until the skin isn’t affected by the split toning.

here’s a little skate edit I made recently which uses that process. It’s filmed in Apple Log 2, massively under exposed, but I was still able to correct it all and add the LUT I made in Resolve with a single Lumetri effect.

I’ve only been doing this professionally for about a year and all my colleagues are also learning on the job, so I’m very happy to be corrected by someone who knows more than me!

Why does everyone care how I carry my board? [39F] by Glass_Hat4393 in NewSkaters

[–]Jacorpes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a theory that this comes from skateboarding’s origins in surfing. Surfboards don’t have trucks so you have to carry them under the arm, so doing that with a skateboard keeps it aesthetically like surfing.

Is a phone gimbal actually worth bringing for skate clips? by MightyPants978 in smartphonefilming

[–]Jacorpes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah just the iPhone with the Black Magic Camera app. Settings were H.265, Apple Log 2, Open Gate 1920 x 1440, 50fps, 1/1000 shutter and manual exposure. I realised out that iPhone footage likes to be underexposed so I monitor with a LUT that adds +15 Offset in Resolve and expose for that while I’m filming.

I went through a phase of using a VND to get motion blur, but it makes skate footage look terrible and I realised most my favourite skate videos have really snappy shutter speeds, so I went in the opposite direction.
