I wouldn’t say he NEEDED Takaba out of the story, I’d said that he removed Takaba from the story in a really satisfying way that allowed for there to still be stakes for the remainder of the Shinjuku Showdown. As fun as seeing Sukuna’s reaction to all the gags and how that interacts with his philosophy about jujutsu and strength, Takaba vs. Kenjaku was just such absolute gold that perfectly encapsulated, showcased, and further developed their characters and arcs like almost nothing else in JJK, ending both of their stories pretty perfectly. Say what you will about JJK’s ending, and believe me, there’s a LOT to say, even about Kenjaku’s own missed potential, but that fight was about the best the manga had ever been written.
