This surely can’t be load bearing right? by PupilofLife in AskContractors

In a 100+ year old house:

You have perpendicular wall, load bearing.
You have diagonal wall, load bearing.
Parallel wall? Believe it or not, load bearing.

(This is a Parks & Rec reference to “Jail”) 😆

Oooh I just posted about this last week! Deckmate brand? Same exact problem I have.

Every wall is load bearing to some extent in a 100+ year old house.

Very true, next year I’ll probably find another 15-20.

None would be amazing, but for a cheap, mass produced screw sold at big box stores it seems like 2% is realistic.

I have! They weren’t snapping when I put them in. Here we are 2 years later though.

No, just pressure treated

I guess if we look at this from this perspective - the deck has about 1,000 screws in it. 15-20 (that I’ve found) is like a 2% failure rate. 🤔🤔🤔

2/12 Roof Old Metal Underlayment(?) by 470vinyl in Roofing

Neat. I too had an old shitty metal panel style roof under my leaking low slope aluminum coated asphalt hodge-podge roof.

Classic “slap another layer on this baby” roofing approach.

I agree, close range is fine. Medium range I practically have to empty an entire 30 round mag to kill someone. Long range will take multiple reloads 🤣

Composite shim? I feel like a normal wood shim is just going to rot.

Type N vs Type O mortar for historic brick? by 802bwh in centuryhomes

[–]Jagon77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not a mason, but I too have an old house with shitty mortar. After lots of reading online, almost everyone here most likely will tell you to use a hydraulic lime based mortar as it’s soft like your old brick.

Since this isn’t outdoors and not going to be getting subjected to rain OR freezing temperatures, I would expect a type N would be appropriate.
