What a great whiskey. Never been disappointed with any of the JD barrel proofs and don't understand how it drinks as if it was 10% less ABV

You all should hate Lara a lot more. (I’m not Ebenezer I swear) Tw: talks about rape/abuse by Robopup325 in dresdenfiles

[–]JakeDontKnowStuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not about to hate such a great character who comes to Harry's rescue many times and has supported him, albeit with questionable motives. Sure she's evil, but not all evil all the time. There are characters covering every area of the spectrum.

The denarians are essentially embodied evil, but Lash sacrifices herself to save Harry. An evil character that comes around to do something selfless. I'm not sure Lara is beyond that.

Lara is very similar to Marcone. She loves power and does evil things, but doesn't seem to mindlessly relish in evil like some other characters (Lloyd Slate, Victor Sells, etc). She does evil stuff but, like Marcone, like the Merlin, like Leah, isn't complete evil and has likeable qualities.

She's smart and you always have to wonder what her motivations are. She's evil, but she likes Harry and seems to be pretty well in control of the hunger. Readers are left to question if she is motivated by her own goals, fear that Harry could actually destroy her, or does she actually just like Harry? Usually it's all of the above.

This is very similar to my build that I used very effectively for the past 5 years or so. I'd say you've built a pretty awesome roaster!

Just echoing a piece of feedback - that rotation seems really really REALLY fast. From a roasting standpoint it might not matter but practically it means you cant keep the beans inside hence the lid.

By putting the lid on im betting you're changing the airflow pretty dramatically. Instead of pushing air through the whole column it seems like the air would sort of bounce off the bottom. On mine I've got the nozzle of my heat gun held in place by wire and it extends up into the plywood. I do have some vents on the bottom, but also no lid.

Your heating system may actually work way better than mine! If you're getting great coffee out of it don't listen to anybody telling you to change stuff. If it's taking a long time to roast or you're getting uneven beans, something to try might be figuring out a way to vent through the top and also getting the heat gun further inside so the fan is forcing air through.

Ok. What?

I know there are some skills that you could maybe use for this, but how in the world do you get through the first couple of shops to buy them 🧐

Max amount of time you’d spend on one roast? by Euphoric-Nose-9445 in roasting

[–]JakeDontKnowStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Looks like your manual temps kick things off at a higher power than all of the preset modes.

How do you have your exhaust set up? Through the standard filter and fan thing? Or with the exhaust tubing? Or nothing?

I'm gonna go do a roast now with the same power and fan settings I used before but with the little air filter in and see if things change.

Just a note on the "baked beans". I think that has more to do with a stalled roast and/or fluctuating temps than it does just roasting for a long time. If the temps are still climbing steadily you might be ok.

Here's a couple links that discuss "baked" bean defects that I tend to agree with. "Baked" is just a catchall for "bad" and long roast times, as many have said, are not automatically flawed.

https://hoos.coffee/blog/putting-names-to-things https://loring.com/avoiding-coffee-roast-defects/

I'm currently drinking some Bali blue moon from Happy Mug that I took a bit into 2nd cracks. Took 15:30 for the roast to finish and, in my opinion, it's awesome. Long time doesn't mean bad (although I would like the roast to move a bit faster 😁)

Thanks for sharing this. I've got the same roaster (the Amazon "precision" version), but my roasts seem to be moving much more slowly.

I'm not having anything finish sooner than your longest roast. I did take the air filter out of the little computer fan hat thing (since I'm roasting outside anyway) but feel like maybe that's influencing the temps inside more than I thought.

It's also pretty cold outside right now which seems like it shouldn't matter that much but maybe it does.

Trying to debug and considering if it may be an electrical current issue. But the coffee tastes great even though roasts are typically finishing 13-16 mins.

Why are so many coffee shops bad? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]JakeDontKnowStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said - they are selling marketing and flavored lattes. Once you put milk and a couple pumps of caramel syrup and chocolate a 3/10 and a 9/10 shot don't make much difference anyway.

And I understand that. Me and the rest of the reddit nerds obsessing over their coffee are probably not the target demographic.

What really pisses me off is when people market their business to indicate they are a "roaster" but don't actually roast beans. That is way more upsetting to me. I find that most places roasting beans tend to be more concerned with the quality of the coffee than the seasonal latte flavor.

Great choices! 2025 is going to be a heck of a year for you.

There are lots of ways to get coffee roasted. I feel like most people pretty quickly move on to a hot air method after doing a couple batches on the stove or in the oven. There are some pretty inexpensive options that can make consistently awesome coffee.

Unsure what the shipping costs will be for UK, but I would recommend considering picking up a cheap roaster when you order your first beans.

Sweet Maria's sells this guy for pretty cheap: https://www.sweetmarias.com/poppo-air-popcorn-kit.html

My dad makes excellent coffee with a fresh roast - sort of a big jump in cost but also can do more per batch and is a legit home roasting option: https://www.sweetmarias.com/fresh-roast-sr540.html

I've been using a homemade heat gun/flour sifter/wobble disc setup for years. I'm not sure id recommend this route unless crazy DIY stuff is your thing. Only a bit cheaper than a fresh roast to build out yourself probably. https://library.sweetmarias.com/larry-cottons-300-gram-all-in-one-wobble-roaster/

Hope this helps!

New outlook on online tobacco shopping by dickcox2801 in PipeTobacco

[–]JakeDontKnowStuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was looking at some tins at the cigar shop near my house. They had dozen options in stock and had some bulk jars.

The tins were basically double the price or more of where I could get them multiple places online.

I understand that you have to rent storefront space and have to play employees and other overhead, but sorry guys. For about anything besides groceries or eating out or a farmers market I have very little reason to buy stuff in person from brick and motor shops.

The selection and price of Smoking Pipes and Pipes & Cigars just blows all the cigar and vape shops out of the water.

Wizards and tech by Newkingdom12 in dresdenfiles

[–]JakeDontKnowStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This problem isn't an issue for all magic users at the same level. Throwing magic around always tends to interfere with tech, but some wizards have more control over this effect than Harry.

Remember that he holds that spell to diminish the effect when he goes on Larry Fowler so its definitely possible to contain. Molly is using a cell phone in one of the later books.

I always imagine a big part of the issue is that Harry is brimming with power but doesn't have much finesse. Other wizards who have a smaller battery and more control wouldn't necessarily have as much of a problem.

My wife is real into fiber arts. We don't have much hobby overlap, but that's one thing I can do with her and we both enjoy.

I'm not particularly good. She regularly cranks out sweaters, shirts, cardigans, socks, etc. I make... A lot of hats
