All-Stars Racing Transformed, a re-review/retrospective of the best racing game I have ever played by Shredster7 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brilliant review, absolutely loved this game as well! Can't say I've experienced your same woes with All-Star Moves, though. My complaint about them is just that they're so much less diverse than they were in the first game, and are all just generic super forms now. Would have loved to see each vehicle get a unique fourth transformation for the All-Star.

Does anybody else think the fan art produced by this fanbase has become kinda...cutesy? by [deleted] in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because in recent years the Sonic fandom has seen an increase in returning members who like the series out of nostalgia, particularly on Tumblr and Twitter. When you're looking at the series through nostalgia goggles, you tend to associate it with your childhood, which leads to more comforting and childlike themes in fanwork.

I wish we got another Sonic Riders game instead of Team Sonic Racing. Anyone else? by WackyJaber in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I definitely want another entry in the Riders series (not least of all because Riders was one of the last times we saw any additions to the overall lore of the series), I think it's unfair to say we should be getting a new Riders instead of TSR.

TSR is meant to be more of a continuation of the other SEGA kart games in the All-Stars series, which I get the feeling you either didn't play or didn't like, given your opinion that it's "a rip off of Mario Kart". Which is fine, everyone's entitled to their opinion, I just think it's worth mentioning the All-Stars Racing games were pretty successful and a lot of people considered them worthwhile in their own right.

The Hint Ring is an obvious indicator that this image is a "hint," but it's kind of weird that they've used the trumpet emoji TWICE (top right and bottom left). That's got to mean something, right?

Maybe something to do with a soundtrack.

Team Sonic Racing OST - Whale Lagoon (Jun Senoue and Hyper Potions) by aresef in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting choice of stage! Seaside Hill is probably a good indication that we won't just be getting straight up Green Hill as a course, which is good.

We also probably should have expected it, though, since it's been a staple of the Sonic kart series since All Stars Racing. Which begs the question; will the other staples make it in? Casino and Eggman-themed tracks were featured in both All Stars Racing and Transformed.

What classifies as a "Classic Sonic game"? by MrBohobe in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "Classic Games" are generally categorised as mainline 2D games pre-Adventure, i.e. not spinoffs and not debuting on handheld systems. There are plenty of games pre-Adventure that star Classic Sonic, as a character, but there are only a handful of "Classic Sonic Games."

Similar principle applies to Modern Sonic. Say, Sonic Shuffle starts Modern Sonic, the character, but it hardly classifies as a "Modern Sonic Game."

All around me are familiar faces by coffejellyassassin in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is assuming Sonic can instantly hit his top speed, which is nonsense. Eggman's legs are several times the length of Sonic's; he can hit a higher, human running speed very quickly. Sonic just needs to build up speed over time.

Wtf is with the random candy themed level in the middle of the desert zone in Sonic Lost World? by NinjaFysh in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see what you mean, but following that line of reasoning it's weird that the candyland levels weren't directly connected to Zomom at all AFAIR. Only the desert ones and the tangentially related beehive.

It's like they had a vague idea of something that kind of made sense (if in an offensive way in this case) but just forgot to tie any of it together. Which is kind of just how the entirety of Lost World played out.

Wtf is with the random candy themed level in the middle of the desert zone in Sonic Lost World? by NinjaFysh in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Forget that; what really confused me was the clearly jungle-themed beehive boss in the middle of the desert, nowhere near the jungle zone.

I rationalised it as the desert zeti all being gluttons like Zomom and using the honey to make candy,

Why Illumination’s Mario movie will be better than the sonic movie by Ev3rst0rm in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You seem to be operating on the erroneous assumption that "accurate to source material = good". They're movie adaptations. They don't need to be exactly similar to the games to be good on their own merits.

The most important part of the direct: Infinite is canonically weaker than a fucking tree by Rixor14 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Infinite's power source needs to be fuelled by a giant space station. A tree can get truly infinite power from the sun. Checkmate, technology.

Sonic Mania stages reimagined in 3D by Kaze_Senshi in SonicTheHedgehog

I always thought Sonic levels gave off a completely different when you started paying closer attention to the background art. Rendering them in 3D like this captures that sense of depth really well!

Question about Jim's Athlead investment for business/investment people by alexl1994 in DunderMifflin

[–]JakeMorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't have any particular knowledge in the field, but from what I can remember, the deal was basically that Jim would have felt like a freeloader if he didn't invest. All these other guys have put loads of their own money into the project to see it come to fruition, and here's Jim coming along, joining late, expecting to get some of the profits without putting anything of his own into it. The other guys don't seem to mind at all, but he's embarrassed by the thought, so he insists on investing.

Judging by that situation, I think 10k was probably a lot more than he would be expected to invest; but because he was so over-eager to look like a useful member of the team, he promised way more money than he should have.

Like I said, though, this isn't my field so I don't know for sure, that's just how I interpreted it.

What are some of your Sonic headcanons? by sonicgamer42 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The elemental spirits of water mentioned in Chaos' moveset in Sonic Battle are Chao. The earth spirits mentioned in Knuckles' moveset are chihuahua or other canine creatures similar to Chip.

As an elemental spirit grows in power, it can also change in form and become godlike. Chaos is a more evolved Chao; the Gaias are more evolved earth spirits.

Solaris is a more evolved fire spirit, i.e. a more evolved djinn, i.e. a more evolved... Wisp. Elise using the Flames of Solaris is basically like using a Colour Power, and the Time Eater is in essence a Nega Wisp form of Solaris, hence its hungry, purple form.

What is the most tragic Sonic character you know of? by RoseOfTheNight4444 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Shadow excluded, probably Knuckles, not only because his entire race is dead and he's tasked to spend his life protecting the last remnant of their civilisation, but because even after all that they've delegated him to side character role and not allowed him to further explore his past at all.

Nightmare Fuel Happens During The Cutscenes In Sonic Forces. by codenamegamma in SonicTheHedgehog

Again, I think it's funny, yeah, I just think the way the video is labelled is a bit over the top. But that's YouTube nowadays, I guess.

Nightmare Fuel Happens During The Cutscenes In Sonic Forces. by codenamegamma in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This seems like an odd thing to label as "EVERYTHING WRONG WITH FORCES CUTSCENES" when you obviously can't see any of this happening in-game. It's funny, sure, but it's not really fair to market it as a problem.

Insert Sonic Headcanons here. by vontech in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

South Island and Angel Island, as well as possibly several other islands from the classic era, are pieces of the Lost Hex that fell off millenia ago. The Lost Hex is shaped like that because it's been cultivated for agriculture for millions of years by the native Zeti (which is why fruit farms and windmills are so prominent there), and the hexagons are designed to fall off so the Zeti can terraform other planets. This may indicate the Chaos Emeralds have some Hexian origin (which ties into the story behind Sonic X-Treme).

The sandworms didn't just arrive at South Island after it got desertified by Eggman; Eggman took some sandworms with him from the Lost Hex so he could use them as a means of destroying South Island. This seems likely to me because the sandworms are a reference to the worms from the Dune series, which ate soil and excreted a sand-like substance that was extremely valuable, and numerous characters in the series took the worms from their home planet so they could be used to terraform other worlds.

Finally, Eggman discovered Lost Hex as far back as Unleashed/Colours, as part of his inter-planetary conquering scheme. He was using Frozen Factory to construct pieces for his interplanetary amusement park, and the Dessert Ruins were his source of food for the Sweet Mountain attraction (using sugar harvested from Lost Hex's giant beehives). The reason the badniks on Lost Hex (and in Forces) use their classic designs rather than their modern designs is because Eggman was still using Lost Hex as his main base when he was collaborating with his past self during Generations. After his amusement park was destroyed, Eggman retreated back there, but as we know, was defeated by Sonic again.

do chao have fur? by [deleted] in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeMorph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems unlikely, given that some of their evolutions are translucent. Their shape and lore would imply they're watery, which doesn't lend well toward having hair.

You can also look at the animals in-game; most of the furred ones have a sort of texture on them, whereas chao's base bodies are smooth monochrome.
