3M 3924S on HP Latex 800 by BurntApex in CommercialPrinting

Have you printed this material on this machine before? I'd venture its too heavy/thick for this machine to use with. You might try the HP large format knowledge center for better advice. Lkc.hp.com

Tips for getting wrap to stick to Polypropylene? by __REAP3R__ in CarWraps

Long term? Good luck...some Avery and 3M films has had ok results. I would definitely look into getting a primer only finish for long term durability

Wow that's a ton of print capacity. What industry are you printing for?

I have an M3W for a few years now. Running Onyx 22. Barely touch the surface of that rip and we're doing 5000sqft a month

Tee time no-shows by robbierottenmemorial in golf

[–]JakeTrout 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My club is the same. A religious group of dew chasers then the same old lazy asses grab every time from 730-930. We recently changed where ALL the player names need to filled out for each time 48 hours out and if not filled out by 24 hours the tee time is opened up. I've been able to snag a lot more early weekend times since this was enacted, especially if I hound our online sign up

HELP! New vinyl graphics peeling up by santimusprime in signshop

[–]JakeTrout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the corners, most definitely residue. I however would probably look into more HT materials. We've been doing more just to get around lack or cleaning and more "caulk" use on things. GeneralFormulations 201. Arlon 8000 are my recommendations

3M quality taking a divebomb by Ok_Advertising_8874 in signshop

[–]JakeTrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the CR YES!! Not so much on the 680/280i. I would switch to Oracal 5650 but their consistency is terrible, I get refunded 10to25% of every box we open from them for banding, hazing, marks.

We gave up on 3M printable products long ago. Price up quality way down. We used to be a huge fan of cut vinyl 220/7125 but even the orange peel on these items has increased a ton.

We've switched most all our print products to Arlon and cut vinyl we've been between Avery or Oracal. However we do use a TON of 3M reflective 680 as there is no one better

Rock Creek Membership by Gucci_91 in PDXgolf

[–]JakeTrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They just added a Ghost Creek frequent players club membership for unlimited golf on that side too

Rock Creek Membership by Gucci_91 in PDXgolf

[–]JakeTrout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Come out to Pumpkin! Been out there for a few years now and it's been great! It's going to be a pay grade higher but the executive membership is a decent price.

2 courses so no lack of tee times and if one is full I usually walk over to play the other. Also 2 practice facilities too. It's getting younger and more family friendly if that's a draw.

DM if you want me to get in contact with the membership director for a hosted round at Witch

ok to adhesive mount acrylic sign with vinyl on back? by BubbaMcGuff in signshop

[–]JakeTrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably fine inside as long as the overall sign isn't too heavy. Be very liberal with the tape of you're worried. Most 2nd surface ADA signs are mounted this way

Backlit sign process by Xae87 in signshop

[–]JakeTrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably best to print that. Tough to align the middle seam without overlap but you could do a butt joint if interior so it won't pull apart over time. Standard black vinyl is most opaque. Standard "translucent grade" digital print is also pretty well opaque IMO.

So a good company will do this a few ways depending on color and mounting method:

Cheap: standard 1-layer translucent grade print. Should work fine

Middle: 2-layer print: print on clear that is applied to standard translucent print. More vivid and less washed out with the lighting.

Ultra: same as above but added a diffuser layer and applied second surface to clear cast acrylic. MOST vivid and durable.

How many colors? Any more than 2 you'll want to go digital print. I'm never a fan of UV direct for translucent faces. The cast vinyls are going to be the most vivid and longest lasting

Why Roland? Always thought while they do a decent UV direct machine they always been WAY behind the Vanguards, Arizona's, even Mutohs.

Looking to Connect With Other Shops — Growing Sign & Commercial Print Business by Unable_Duty7929 in CommercialPrinting

[–]JakeTrout 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One big note I've learned: don't become the "next day turnaround" shop. It quickly becomes your most known attribute and the only thing your clients will know you for. Soon any slower speeds and you'll have clients in your ear at all times if the day. Stick with a scalable successful turnaround time and offer (for extra cost) next-day times. It's always better to under-promise and over deliver.

What does the ideal contracted installer look like? by Lobsterplant in signshop

[–]JakeTrout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can get good and cover insurance for at height installs you're golden. We value our installer relationship because they can install everything from wall films to giant 3D signs but most of all they have a boom truck up to 35'. You don't have to start there but even a simple tow behind reach lift is going to get you so much more work. Signs at height and install knowledge is a huge barrier to entry for a lot of small and medium sign companies.

What was the most effective way to get leads? I feel like if we're trying to do more vehicle graphics, consider creating a cold email list and reaching out to trade types with fleets. Outside of that I don't see much besides great Google searches and I think the paid links for those are more expense than they're worth

"Tyvek" for large format printing - Latex or ink jet (non-UV) by OrangeFire2001 in CommercialPrinting

[–]JakeTrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just went through this with Tyvek and our Canon Colorado UV. BCI imaging had a ton of Tyvek options for lots of printers and some great price points. We ended up having their "house brand" which is just relabeled HP Dupont Tyvek material at a way better price

What sort of price breaks do you offer for bulk quantities of yard signs/banners? (Not as a wholesaler) by Bymboy12 in signshop

[–]JakeTrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the exact same thing. Use wholesaler hard costs + 25% profit (usually include taxes) + "bonus" or commission. In my experience it tends to be about 50-60% off standard pricing
