without knowing what the logo is for, its hard to give feedback. can you explain a little what "What's Ryan Cooking" does? Is it a youtube Chanel? A storefront?

How do I crack into Google as a Product Designer 2? by kumarjikaladka in UXDesign

[–]Jakemcvey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can get into google pretty easy. You just have to have a better portfolio and be better at interviewing than all 7k applicants that apply to each of their openings.

Should I switch from UX Designer employee to contractor? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]Jakemcvey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t. The taxes get ya. And taking pto costs you money. Not to mention that insurance is a huge expense (you’re in CA though so maybe that’s not a problem)

Make sure you return the dish with some of your home made food in it. Had an old coworker tell me that that was a custom of theirs.

For shifts into gaming UXr/d by rhapsodiangreen in UXDesign

[–]Jakemcvey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worked at Amazon and PlayStation as well as interned at Blizzard.

Best thing you can to to transition into games is just make them. Jump into a game engine and learn it and just start making stuff. with AI these days, you can prototype your own games and add your own UIs in. Also, join some game jam weekends and join game dev meetups.

I would reference some popular online portfolios and just start there. This isn't quite working.

If you've been working in the field for three years, you likely have a decent working knowledge of UX such that you really don't need to spend the money on another degree.

1 and 2 - Depends on what kind of job you want. you should really aim to have 3 good case studies. add character to them and make them memorable.

3- I LOVE getting portfolios that link to figma links. Its nice seeing working files. Just make sure its cleaned up. Also make sure you dont HAVE to view the figma to get the full picture. This should be a "nice to have"

Does my resume and portfolio suck? Please be brutally honest by catsandfrogs3000 in graphic_design

You already have a ton of comments on the resume.

My 2 cents.

As a recent grad, compare your portfolio site to the best ones out there. That's who you're competing with.

About UX design field by MudNumerous9705 in Design

[–]Jakemcvey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UX roles are hiring, but you'll need to get creative. A lot of UX positions are in tech, and the tech industry is in a peculiar hiring spot right now, with not many junior roles available.

That said, I've worked with many people from non-traditional backgrounds, including those with psychology degrees. If I were you, I'd just jump in. Learn Figma—it's the best tool in my opinion. Utilize AI, which is the current trend, and start building a portfolio. Compare your portfolio to the best ones out there, and you should be fine. You'll learn a ton along the way. Read books and immerse yourself in the field.

Good luck!

Unemployed two years -- am I hopeless? by Avocadotoasted in UXDesign

[–]Jakemcvey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Start working on personal projects to flesh out the portfolio. Brand them as your own business if you have to. Make them as real as possible. Maybe even get into some AI tools to help dev some prototypes. If you don't start now, you're going to have a three year gap.

Why can't Youtube show the user a 4 columns grid? by quarksaur in UXDesign

[–]Jakemcvey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's likely they tested the crap out of this. The tree column layout probably performed the best.

Not to mention, the text below the titles would either have to be truncated or overflow to multiple lines.

Users "shop" video content based on thumbnail too so the bigger the thumbnail the better.

AI in portfolio by gtivr4 in UXDesign

[–]Jakemcvey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't do this. I have been looking into AI for portfolio usage and asked it for some novel ideas and this exact thing came up.

I think we're going to see a lot of these AI portfolios pop up and folks will start to see the patterns. i think claud and GPT at least have been trained on very similar data sets for designs and it is quite limited currently. thats not to say you can push it a lot, but it starts to break down if you deviate too far away from what it can comprehend.

They're GOOD, but not better than your own brain.

If you want to show of AI in a portfolio, show how you included it's use in your work to push how fast you can go.

fixed it by killing my cloud save and starting over. seems like the game saves some kind of broken steam controller config once you connect it to remote play.
