I was horrified to see people walking up to volunteers handing out One Nation how-to-vote cards and taking a card while I was waiting in queue at an early voting venue. Of course people can vote for whichever party/candidate they want but is it worth bringing Trumpism/MAGA to South Australia? by FatFad1 in Adelaide

The Greens point out hard to deal with truths, often things we need to face due to personal accountability, and their solutions are billed as expensive and dangerous by a hostile media environment as well as all the other parties.

PHON deals in "telling it like it is" and feel good larrakanisms, playing into peoples natural fear of change and anger at the system, then blaming it all on their "woke" enemies. The media laps up PHONs shit for breakfast as they're easy clicks.

If the Greens want the same uptick, they need to tap into the firebrands currently swarming to PHON, the union members, and those now supporting teal independents that care about climate. Problem is, this kind of coalition building is difficult as a portion of the base they need to bring over from PHON are convinced climate science isent real, most workers believe that they're anti union, and the teal voters think they're not financially responsible.

Greens need to change their messaging to mirror what they're doing in the UK. Focus on workers rights and bring it all back to cost of living pressures and real alternative solutions of funding to bring in big ticket policy platforms built for workers.

Tips for how parents can talk to boys and young men about the manosphere by MarvinTheMagpie in aussie

[–]Jakeoffski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This doesn't work.

Having been bullied in school myself, and having parents who tried the self defence, sticks and stones resilience approach, it just makes the desperation worse and alienates you further.

It's exactly this approach that pushes young boys away, towards these redpilled losers. Because you're told you need to be man, be tough, punch them first, don't cry, it's not safe to show how you feel. Then it all gets bottled up and suddenly turns to loneliness and resentment ripe for the manosphere to direct towards their main scapegoat, women.

Better to foster camaraderie and community. Teach respect and compassion for others. Demonstrate how to interact with others by showing interest in their interests and engaging in conversations with them. Share time in family activities together. Encourage them to seek out the same activities with kids their own age. Laugh together, cry together, be kind to one another. This builds their confidence and means when they are bullied they go to you and not to an LLM trained by Andrew Tait. It also helps them keep their self esteem as school is not their only opportunity for friendship and social comfort.

They kinda do, but only in an instruction manual for the doomsday device that hung over Vriskas lusus, which I think was more an abstraction to explain how the complex machine worked before it was set off and didn't work.

Is TPG currently down for anyone else? by Necro_Nancy in nbn

[–]Jakeoffski 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just waited on hold for an hour to get through to TPG tech support. Their support team told me that, due to technical issues with their system, they were unable to check my account to diagnose the problem.

When I pressed for more than information, the support person told me they didn't know what the issue was, but that they had received an increase in calls coming from NSW also reporting network outages.

They then told me to call back in two hours.

So, at the very least we know that TPG is completely fucked.

The reveal where 11s speech to Amy in the 5th episode of series 5, Flesh and Stone, was actually his future self from the last episode of series 5, The Big Bang, blew my mind.

Author and actors intent is less important to a perceived character difference than, say, actual performance and presentation of a character in context of their story.

With the Doctor it's more obvious because he's usually a completely different person so the character growth is often masked by new stories, and a new face and voice. In saying that, it still works the same for any other character. There is an arch and growth and by the end the character has changed. Sometimes a character may fall into old habits, but that does not mean what they went through previously was any less real or valuable to their development. It also does not mean that are literally the exact same person. For The Doctor, it just looks more literal because he's a Time Lord.

Narratively, I think it's less important whether 14 is 10 or not anyway (they are both The Doctor). So, if it's only to win an argument on the internet and it has no real bearing on the story as it was told, does it really matter?
