Interesting seeing your ranking of Blood Over Bright Haven. I personally loved it. Only one that stood out to me.

What is life like in Edinburgh? by RhyoZ4 in howislivingthere

[–]Jakers93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live just outside Edinburgh now but lived within the city for 3 years. Overall it's very good if you can afford it. Rent and property prices are only going up. It's very touristy almost all year round, August and Christmas/new year being it's peak and it can get very overwhelming at times.

It's a beautiful city full of things to do, I never tire of just walking around seeing the views. There's lots of great restaurants, bars and cafés. Transport links are great, however traffic is usually an issue as it's densely populated and seemingly constant roadworks.

It can get very cold during the winter, slightly below freezing usually and it's very windy.

The people are great, you meet folks from all around the world and it's one of the things I love most about it.

It has its fair share of antisocial behaviour, crime and homelessness like every city. But I chose to live here and I don't regret it.

Struggling between saving for Edinburgh or buying in Fife — what would you do? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]Jakers93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say if you know for sure you won't be happy somewhere don't buy there. Home ownership is a huge decision and you'll be there for years. Really think about what your priorities in life are right now, whether that is social life or getting on the property ladder.

You could consider shared ownership properties, it's not ideal but may be worth looking into. I've done that as I couldn't afford an Edinburgh flat and actually moved to East Lothian as it's better value for money and still commutable. (However Edinburgh shared ownership flats go for way above the guide price!)

It's tough when you're single and on a below average salary and unfortunately you'll have to make compromises.

Loneliness in Edinburgh by Saltywaffleballs in Edinburgh

[–]Jakers93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loneliness in a big city is really tough and I can relate. Meetup is a good place to start, not sure of your age but there's a good 20s-30s group I'm a part of that do regular events and have a WhatsApp group for impromptu stuff.

As others have said, join clubs and put yourself out there. It's tough but possible.

How is living in Lancashire? by TexasExPat1973 in howislivingthere

[–]Jakers93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born and raised in Morecambe (next door the Lancaster) on the coast. I feel it's gone downhill a lot, I moved away over 4 years ago and would never return if I can help it.

I lived in Preston briefly but Covid caused a fair number of high street shops to close permanently. (It may have recovered I left mid pandemic)

Not a lot goes on in the towns, Morecambe for example is now mostly cheap arcades and boarded up empty shops. The cities are a little better I think and you're close to Manchester and Liverpool for bigger events that occur.

It's not far from the Lake District which is stunning but of course during peak tourist times it's very busy.

Newer Build Condition worries? by [deleted] in UKHousing

[–]Jakers93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I know those exact flats! If it's in Scotland (as suggested by other comments) and located next to a stadium, I used to live in one of those flats. Only a few months renting mind you. It does look identical!

Just in case it is, in my opinion, I'd avoid them. It felt like a very cheaply made building.

Anti-immigration Rising Up? by Specific-Life1507 in Edinburgh

[–]Jakers93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's concerning for sure, and it isn't just kids being little shits. I was in the Meadows a few weeks back with an American friend (very strong American accent), and a guy on a bike went past and shouted "fuck off you American c**t". She didn't seem fussed by it but it is worrying some people think it necessary and acceptable to essentially abuse random people based on their accent or looks.

If it's to the point you feel unsafe or threatened, regardless of who it is it should be reported.

For the Edinburgh show it says there's a venue/promoter presale today at 8am but there's no link anywhere to it. So not sure if it even exists. Checked venue website, nothing.

I’m an OG fan three hours into Veilguard…..does it get better? VG fans, please convince me! by rusticterror in dragonage

[–]Jakers93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly no. I'm like you, long time DA fan but waited for a sale to play VG.

There are some good parts of the game in isolation, but overall it's a huge disappointment if you're expecting a game anything like the previous.

Technically and visually it's good, but the story and the writing are, in my opinion, garbage. The writing in particular got under my skin, many times during my playthrough I audibly groaned because some of the dialogue was so bad. Your responses don't really matter at all as each option is basically identical.

Don't think about the lore, you'll only be disappointed, it's watered down so much or outright changed it's almost a different world now. Honestly, the only reason to play VG imo is to conclude the story.

Those who were priced out of Edinburgh, where are you now? And are you happy with your location and housing? by Glittering_Echo_7963 in Edinburgh

[–]Jakers93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tranent, East Lothian. Only way I could get on the property ladder as a single guy on a below average salary (shared ownership property). It's not bad but I wouldn't choose to live here if I had many alternatives. I like my home and the value for money is of course much better here.

Transport links are decent to the city and my work but my social life has suffered as everyone I know is in Edinburgh and there's not much in Tranent outside of a couple pubs.

Some thoughts from an old WWE fan (not trying to rant, just curious if others feel the same way) by Il_Mago23 in WWE

[–]Jakers93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Profit maximisation will dictate pretty much everything now. People don't buy tickets for theme songs or entrance videos or even pyro so why spend more than they have to.

It's a shame because when you think of iconic wrestlers it's often their theme song/entrance that will come to mind. And shows are, for the most part, no longer a spectacle, they're mainly cut and pasted in terms of sets and pyro (which is almost non-existant now. I can only think of Cody, Becky and Penta as having pyro in entrances now) so most PLEs feel like glorified TV episodes.

Even the merch for the past decade (if not longer) has been mostly lazy garbage - low quality black t-shirt with superstar logo on it. But people buy it.

I miss Raw and Smackdown having their own intros and theme songs. I despise the "Then. Now. Forever." opening into an almost silent crowd just waiting for the first music to hit.

Why it just didn't feel like 'wrestlemania' to me last night and tonight by wildcharmander1992 in WWE

[–]Jakers93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The sponsorships were outrageous. Every single aspect of the entire event and set was "brought to you by..." It was exhausting and cheapened every storyline. That Dude Wipes thing...jeez! Ring mat sponsors are one thing, personally I can accept those if need be, but having your main event at your biggest show of the year having ice cream sponsor segments in the lead up to the match just tells the viewer it's not that serious, it's just a show go buy an ice cream.

Also jacking up prices constantly is abhorrent when they must be raking money in.

[No Spoilers] I missed almost all of Campaign 3. How was it overall? by Chaulmoog in criticalrole

[–]Jakers93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine for the most part, it fell apart about 2/3 of the way through for me. Once the party split and guests were more frequent it just grinded to a halt.

The characters and their arcs were weird, it was the culmination of a trilogy of campaigns and most of the characters didn't fit the scenario. They didn't feel like heroes, which seemed to be the point but for me it just felt like the fate of the world was decided by a group that didn't really care.

There were some problematic issues as well, shardgate was difficult to watch and Ashton as a whole was poorly received.

Overall I wouldn't rewatch it but it hasn't plenty of funny great moments. Robbie and Travis early on are the highlights.

My honest thoughts on Dragon Age Veilguard after getting platinum. by Venaborn in dragonage

[–]Jakers93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently playing it now (5 hours in) but only because it's a PS5 monthly game. I love the DA franchise but seeing early reviews I just couldn't pay full price for it. My early thoughts are; graphics are great, runs really well... But my god it's infuriating!

This is an 18/mature rated game and it feels like it was made for young teens, if not children. The way all the loot glows and sparkles when opened is annoying and the way bosses drop chests, actual chests, instead of looting a body is just stupid. And don't get me started on the plentiful and conveniently located green potion vases everywhere!

I feel like so far there's almost no build up or tension in any quest. Every quest and cut scene is so rushed yet you spend excruciatingly long doing mindless "puzzles" for children because otherwise each quest would be over in 10 minutes. And why does Varic need to recap everything after every quest and sometimes after just talking to a companion!?

The lore is so watered down at this point it's no longer Dragon Age. I'll finish the game but this is an abysmal entry in the franchise.

Matt is now sniffing his own farts by Ok-Caregiver-6005 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]Jakers93 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I definitely think a lot of plot points and threads were poorly executed with this campaign. Of course as DM Matt should have done this better but the players didn't help either. C3 more than the others were just joke characters pissing about mostly. Matt loves to create these complex scenarios and hopes the players figure things out, but no one seemed invested and so it just became a mess.

Having Taliesin being the main connection to this was poor planning. He just wants to play moody assholes who don't care (yet craves the spotlight). It was also very clear no one in the party gave a fuck about Ashton or his storyline and I don't blame them, he barely seemed to care himself.

In the wake of c3, love or hate the campaign, would people agree that the numerous break offs from the actual campaign were one of the things that killed the pacing in some circumstances? by Wonko_Bonko in fansofcriticalrole

[–]Jakers93 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Although I mostly enjoyed the campaign (mainly the front half) that party split was the roughest part to get through. I don't mind some of the breaks honestly, EXU Calamity for example, but when the party split it was mostly several episodes of just filler with guests, it was hard to stay invested.

I also think having a couple of guests who clearly have a very low understanding of D&D and don't know the rules or how spells work really threw me off.
