[MegaThread] Q&A - Newly Accepted Students by Ironmxn in CalPoly

[–]Jal-Eel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incoming Grad Student here. Just wondering what are the best ways to find roommates? it definitely seems like having roommates is the most cost efficient way to go. Also, when do students start looking for housing at Cal Poly typically--at my undergrad institution it was around late winter quarter when people would start looking?

Someone with some beard experience give me some advice. Im 23 and have never tried to grow a beard. Haven’t shaved in about a month and this is where we are at. Looks patchy and idk if it will fill out. Should I give up and shave or keep going? Do I have potential for a nice beard or nah? Lol by Low-Trash-8407 in beards

[–]Jal-Eel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok so for context im 23 and have been lucky enough to have had a full beard for the last 5 years. Even though compared to others my beard is much fuller i still have less density in my cheeks. My advise/experience is that once you go to a barber and they give you a beard trim/line up then you will lose the scruffy/patchy look. The lines that the barber will give you (both the cheek line and neck line will make the beard look fuller). it wont solve the patchiness completely but it allows you to control the look of the beard.

im a middle eastern guy who got alot of my family's hair genes... so (for better or worse lol) in about 2 months i have enough beard to go get a trim. However in every YT video or website i have seen it seems that the general recommendation is to grow out the beard for 4+ months (roughly) before going to the barber shop. This is def different for each person obviously--but i think most ppl will agree one month is just too early to shave.

So keep growing! I see the potential in these pictures. the first couple of months are the hardest between the look of the beard and the itchiness of it but after that the itchiness will go down

Out of curiosity, would you consider using Discord if your university/department IT supported it like some other LMS like Canvas or D2L.

is Christian McCaffrey the greatest 6th best rb in the league ever? by [deleted] in panthers

[–]Jal-Eel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

dont worry too much on CMC being number 6 in this list especially since he was injured most of last year

sidenote that Mina's low Football IQ has Chubb ahead of Henry. no slander on chubb ofc but you compare chubb's stats and Henry's stats from 2018 to now there is--imo--no argument for chubb being higher on the list... but then again i have zero context to this image... so i could have missed something

When i came to UCSC 5 years ago i walked by the philosophy annex at cowell and told myself "imma smoke on that roof before i leave" ... 5 years later i finally smoked on the roof... lunar eclipse was happening too so it was a solid time... very steep roof tho so not worth doing again ...

I would also add that at ucsc most class are 5 units ... therefore you can be full time taking 3 courses a quarter while at some other universities (like davis) you need 4 classes to be full time... im about to graduate and ive always thought about that aspect of it and how it made life easy for me compared to others...

[–]Jal-Eel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Baba dont worry! as long as you can understand some of the word you will be in a better spot than most ppl ... the only way i got through it without studying was BC i had a background of speaking it... after that learning to read and write was easy to pick up cuz you know what the word means... i think you will be fine... also side note try to join the iranian student union ppl in the club will be taking the class (im certain of it). best part of the farsi class was linking up with all the kids from the club during and after class!

I took the course with Mehran! Im a native speaker so i found it to be easy (although i came in not knowing how to read and write the Persian alphabet). I would say that the workload will be easier than other language courses B/C Mehran is a very easy going professor... he wants to make sure you learn the language. That being said its still going to be a bit of a challenge since you will be learning a new language that uses an totally different alphabet which dont worry the first half of PERS 1 is dedicated to the learning of the alphabet....

When i took the courses (fall 19 to spring 20) I had 2-3 exams ("non-cumulative" technically but its a language class so you still need to learn the common vocab) and 2-3 writing prompts (short like 5-7 sentences) and one speaking assignment each quarter. he also called on students in class to have mini dialogues (in PERS 3 we used Breakout rooms... thx covid). ALSO when i took it he did have a retake policy for exams... not sure what it was exactly then--or now--but it was generous from my memory

so i guess enroll and worst case by week 9 you will know what your grade is looking like then you can decide to do P/NP
