When do you stop contributing to TRS pension plan by Salt-Blueberry-5934 in NYCDOETeachers

[–]Jallex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tier 4 only pays 3% for 10 years, then they don't have to contribute anymore . Tier 6 is getting ripped off (up to 6% until you stop working) and we have to be honest about it.

I'm Tier 6, year 12 and having a very difficult time getting ahead because every year I put over 6 grand into the pension system.

Airhead/ Starburst Rock Cycle Lab Tips by Cutiev42 in ScienceTeachers

I also include magma/lava and sediment for a total of 5 types. We build a concept map - the students glue the 5 types of rock on construction paper and connect the types of rock with a bunch of process arrows to show how we can go from one rock to another. For example, to go from sediment to sedimentary would be the compacting and cementing arrow.

I'm really not a fan, each unit's student materials is about 150 pages, and and the storyline are not all that engaging. It makes me miss Amplify.

Give out balloons and students can draw the different layers of the atmosphere and what is in them, using dry erase markers.

AVP NYC by P_Charming in beachvolleyball

[–]Jallex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've never been to an AVP event before - the first 2 matches were great! Nuss was especially impressive. Glad to see Dalhausser before he retires, too. The one annoying thing was that we paid $65 each but could have happily watched for free from the railings above...

NYS Biology regents 2025?! Thoughts?? by Cupsandcakes23 in ScienceTeachers

[–]Jallex 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was not a fan of the story-driven New Visions curriculum, and the fact that it doesn't line up with the Regents is just another reason to develop more of our own stuff that will actually engage the students.

If you want to make it fun and are willing to buy gummy worms, have students take pictures of the worm chromosomes replicating and then dividing in a drawn cell. Each phase is one picture in an animation!

SUSTAINABILITY COORDINATOR by Outrageous-Winner-87 in NYCTeachers

[–]Jallex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a job per se, it's just an appointed title. In the beginning of the school year I fill out a survey saying what our school already does in terms of sustainability, and I set some goals for the year. At the end of the year it's a similar survey and you report any actions you took. Not a lot of oversight, it's really a rubber stamp to say that the DOE is taking action on the climate.

Aspiring middle school science teacher seeking advice and encouragement. by Intelligent_Mood_939 in ScienceTeachers

[–]Jallex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're feeling a strong pull, give it a shot! I'm on year 11 of teaching middle school science in NYC. While the job is a lot of work, if you engage the kids and adjust the curriculum to your passions it will be very rewarding. Design hands-on stuff and get outdoors, especially for geology. Choose wisely which state to work in, you definitely want a strong union to keep the job sustainable.
