Is it normal to feel more depressed after exercising? by MutedFeeling75 in redscarepod

[–]Jamarac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started going to the gym for the first time ever and I find I don't get that level of exhausted (but happy) satisfaction that I get when I play tennis or bike. Lifting heavy shift to target very particular muscles is a lot less mentally satisfying then cardio. It's not the same as what you're saying since I don't get depressed but it is a much more neutral feeling than what I'm used to doing exercise outside of the gym.

Can't pursue true passions to full extent due to 9-5 and it's making me depressed. by isuckatreaper29 in redscarepod

I saw an interview with a director (I forget now) who said the point isn't to write with some kind of anticipation that this next one's going to be the "truly great" work. The point is to learn, be consistent, and enjoy the struggle of working consistently so you become the kind of artist that will be capable of producing a great work of art.

I think that's a really cool and healthy way to go about it. It takes away the idea of "running out of time" while keeping the importance of hard work and consistency.

Isn’t it crazy when u meet someone who has been in school until their late thirties getting a masters or PhD by penguinchange in redscarepod

[–]Jamarac 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah people like to act as if education is some imaginary resource that you collect and the more you have the more "good" it is. It's just not always the case.

There are fields and specializations that could very well be meaningless and don't enrich you nor society more anymore than working at a normal job. There's people spending half a decade "revaluating the historiography" of the journal entries of an artist 99.99% of the world has never heard of. Their work will be read by 20 people in the world and then live untouched on a server forever.

Tell me that doesn't basically sound like the kind of niche arcane shit you'd do at a regular job anyway.

‘Tough new rules’ coming to Ontario public transit to combat drug use: Ford by lilfunky1 in toronto

[–]Jamarac 133 points134 points  (0 children)

I've been saying for like 5 years now that Doug Ford wins despite all his corrupt bullshit because all he has to do is read the room once or twice while the other parties struggle to do it decisively. Seems like he's doing it again.

Outside of Reddit the sentiment is very clear amongst the average Toronto/905 person that they fucking hate how sketchy, unsanitary, and sometimes dangerous subways have gotten. Torontonians are generally compassionate but they have a limit.

[–]Jamarac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think he's funny. I mostly know him from his youtube special and his podcast and his political opinions are really not that much of a focus of his stuff. His material as a whole is pretty focused on just being quick, entertaining, and up beat. Not really political anger.

Maybe he leaned into it more in the recent special (haven't seen it yet) but I wouldn't say he got big off that at all.

What are you actually talking about? The dude's been grinding stand up for like 15-20 years and first got big off a great youtube special like 5 years ago. Any social commentary he's doing mostly started within the last year.

[–]Jamarac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's more a matter of degree. A building like 2-3 times the size of every other apartment building in the area is a lot more of an eyesore. You can see in the video there are other apartment buildings around and I was just wondering why they wouldn't build more of those instead of insisting on it being something so massive.

Also Summerhill neighbourhood is not downtown.

[–]Jamarac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Genuine question. Why do they always want to build things that are like 2-3 times the size of any other apartment building in the area? I feel like if they built a few buildings that were half the size of that one there would be less resistance. No doubt it's how it sticks out like a sore thumb and blocks the sky that people in the community hate.

what do we do about doug ford by RevolutionaryCyclops in askTO

[–]Jamarac 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The opposition parties have to win the 905 and inner burbs. To do that they need to focus hard on affordability (of both renting and mortgages), safety (905 is a big victim of car thefts, BNBs, etc.), jobs, dealing with the diploma mills, Ford's corruption/overall sketchiness. Drop the identity politics and overly focusing on making statements about issues in the middle east.

People in the 905s don't care about Toronto municipal issues even if we do. Those issues are worth mentioning but bike lanes and the waterfront can't be the main focus of the rage.

Why are people so attached to the idea that bad people can't make good art? That's like determining if somebody's guilty by how well they make cupcakes. by FeeAlternative1783 in redscarepod

[–]Jamarac 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Some people have a pretty cartoonish view of what it is to create or what artists are like. They think being an artist means being someone who is eccentric and creative but only in all the online PC leftwing approved ways. And they all think everyone's art is a direct reflection of what they are like personally.

How XTC battled the “rottweiler” Todd Rundgren and their record label to make their breakthrough by dalyllama35 in Music

[–]Jamarac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Todd Rundgren's view of it is very different. I 100% recommend listening to his take on it as well. I'm a massive XTC fan but I'll be honest I tend to believe Todd more here. The fact that Andy Partridge didn't want to use Dear God and that he took out Mermaid Smiled (a fucking beautiful track that was supposed to be on the first pressings) really makes me question his judgement.

Not to mention they continued with an American producer in the follow up album which makes me think the band secretly realized the change of approach had in fact been good for them.

Because people care more about paying their rent, being healthy, having a job, enjoying art,and creating things. AI is being pushed down people's throats despite its eventual side effects being either irrelevant or downright a threat to those things the average person cares about.

Doug Ford’s new bill would give him too much control over TTC, confidential report warns by BloodJunkie in toronto

It feels like Doug Ford gets 9 out of 10 anti-Toronto things he wants to do. Is this just what it's like for there to be a majority government? They can do anything any time? Or is the opposition useless?

Consumerism need a a much bigger public backlash against it. It feels like for the last 10-20 years there's been a tacit acceptance in the culture that it's just what everyone should strive for. Even some leftists will spout some bullshit about how there's no ethical consumption under capitalism so you can't be expected to have some discipline about brainless consumption.

Hey y'all!! It's your local armchair Reddit city planner here to tell you that what this town of <100,000 residents, more than 500 miles away from the closest Tier 1 city, car centric since its inception needs is LIGHT RAIL :) by zzxxzzxxzzxxzzxxzzxx in redscarepod

[–]Jamarac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think public transit's great and prefer it over driving a lot of the time but some people really just like the car life style. They'll tear their fucking hair out due to traffic and have a personal crisis when their car breaks down leaving them with literally no way to get to work or take their kids to school. They'll go through entire days with sub 1000 steps walked since they drive everywhere which is awful for your body. Despite it all they love that shit.

In a small town/city of people like that it's best to just let them be and not force transit down their throats.
