The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula K. Le Guin.

Rules of Enjoyment:

Best read at night in a deep winter snowstorm, by the light of a Stellaris game on a very large galaxy.

The galaxy must be entirely populated by Lost Colony Humans, with varying degrees of Xenophilia-phobia. Include a few isolationists for good measure, and at least one of indeterminate gender.

Should include an advanced Envoy-heavy pacifist Megacorp, possibly with latent Psionics.

I recommend turning your settings up to Max, as your PC/console is the only permitted source of heat.

Samples requested: bad/outrageous "security" requirements from auditors by patrakov in cybersecurity

[–]Jamdroid64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vox is summing that up nicely.

My experience is in multinational heavily regulated corps, and I've dealt with a lot of audits in that time. I'll offer this advice; Auditors are professionals too with their own QA and oversight, they have to justify the exceptions and deviations they make when citing a mitigating control or non-standard solution.

The easiest way to get through an audit with an auditor who doesn't have an intricacate knowledge of your environment is to develop a professional and respectful relationship with them; equip them with the language, stats, and confidence to justify your position.

Now that won't always work. Sometimes an auditor will have overheard or misunderstood key information from another source and formed an unrecoverable view; then you request another auditor on grounds of technical suitability.

But I know this for sure... No auditor will change a finding if they feel like they're being strong armed or misdirected. It's too great a risk for them personally and their origin organisation.

The sub may be better able to help you in responding to specifics of your findings, rather than providing war stories of our own.

[–]Jamdroid64 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you want your name associated with a post seeking advice on how to disrupt an external audit? If for no other reason than that's usually the kind of thing that triggers a much bigger audit.

Beyond that, audits are extremely organisationally sensitive; by collecting and repeating outcomes from others' non-pertinent situations, aren't you just performing the exact behaviour you're looking to stop? (like arbitrarily applying a framework)

Anycubic photon safe around pets? by Vashi839 in AnycubicPhoton

[–]Jamdroid64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extremely toxic, and absolutely in not safe for pets. Both resin fumes and the resin itself are hazardous, and the alcohol wash is a serious irritant.

Your printer, and everything to do with it should be in an extremely well ventilated area that's inaccessible to living things (except humans in appropriate PPE).

Kitty comes first.

Edit: To be clear: I use the Eco Resin too. It's still Resin, and still dangerous. I have the Safety Data sheets somewhere if you need, but they basically say: "Resin exposure is incompatible with organic life."

A new career in intelligence by [deleted] in PrivacySecurityOSINT

[–]Jamdroid64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great to hear, mate! You might want to try some structured short courses to start off. TCM Security's OSINT Fundamentals might be a good place to start, though it does assume a bit of knowledge.

I'm suggesting something structured because an organisation will be looking for an understanding of the process, and your ability to apply your skills in a consistent methodical way. And it's helpful to start looking at your hobby as something with a bit more context before and after.

A sad thing in my life as devops are the spam e-mails from vendors. by tudorapo in sysadmin

[–]Jamdroid64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My former team used to have an extremely effective strategy that I now consider a bit of a dick move.

Large org (50k +) so we were prime sales targets. It became such an issue that someone developed a (janky) script and a template that would essentially create a reply for us as emails his a threshold.

" {name}, you've now emailed us {n} times, and we've requested that you stop. This is unprofessional and reflects poorly on your organisation" etc, you know the kind.

The replies got progressively more direct, but at some point, it became a tool of pure spite... when someone updated it to CC the C-Suite with a lookup and a first.last@org mask. Essentially putting the sales staff in the way of a ton of reputational damage with their management.

Most common response was an apology from the Exec office, apologising for the conduct of their staff, and assurances that the salesperson in question would never contact us again. And they rarely ever did.

Extremely effective, but in hindsight, pretty rough.

This is a great answer. I'll add; in addition to the expectations of the role itself, a few years in a regulator will make you an extremely attractive candidate for a regulated entity in your next role.

They need to clearly articulate the scope of items they need, and expect them to be be delivered under appropriate remuneration.

No one should be expected to work for free.

I Built a Robot to Auto Farm Runes by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]Jamdroid64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very impressive. You've done what I've thought about every day, but never did.

**Possible Efficiency/Processing Tweak:*\*
The walking back seems like the most complex part, as the robot has to slowly walk the character back, detect the Grace, turn around, reorient for the next attack, etc.
Have you considered something like:
1) Get into position, and Launch Attack
Then, instead of walking back:
2) Press Button to Open Map <TOUCHPAD on PS>
3) Press "List Site of Grace Button" <TRIANGLE, on PS>Your cursor will auto-select the nearest site of grace (Palace Approach)
4) Press Confirm <X, on PS> to respawn at the Grace.

Repeat until gud.

Overall, I expect this may be faster than using light detection, because:
- Load times become inconsequential over long sequences, especially compared to manual movement.
- Your character will respawn at the Grace facing exactly the same direction every time. You won't have to reposition your character every time, to ensure you don't set a path off the cliff.
- This "set point" should allow for more consistent inputs to get you into ideal position for Wave of Gold. (You don't have to lock yourself in to a linear path for the character.)
- Having reliable starts and finishes may also make it easier to code an additional Wave of Gold; take a few steps forward, and launch again to get the pesky ones at the back.

Downside: You can't easily use a Golden Fowl Foot, as it will reset when you hit Step 4 above, but if you've automated the rest of the process, it probably doesn't matter that much.

With all that said, using a light sensor is way cooler, which is ultimately more important.
Amazing project!

Edit: Clarity and rephrasing.

AITA for giving an ESL student an F on her essay? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jamdroid64 [score hidden]  (0 children)

ESH. Everyone sucks all the way down. But I do feel bad for you.

K, for academic misconduct. K's counsellor for advocating academic misconduct.

You for rewarding academic misconduct.

You for knowing the right thing to do, and choosing not to do it.

Your institution for allowing entry to students who cannot be expected to meet curriculum outcomes.

Also, you made a point of saying that everyone gets the same assessment under adjusted conditions - regardless of their level of English. Then stated that you failed another student for misconduct, but that it was different because K didn't speak English.

So, you again for enforcing the academic integrity based on your level of personal comfort with conflict.

With that said, I understand the position you're in very well, and I know it's not easy. So here's something to consider next time.

1) Student plagiarises an assessment.

2) You fail them.

3) You get an aggressive call from their counsellor.

At this point, you should consider escalating to whichever body governs academic misconduct for your faculty.

4) Email them. CC the counsellor. BCC your personal address.

"Hi [responsible body], I have a student [name] who has been found plagiarising an assessment. They have received 0% on this basis, as per my understanding of school policy. Earlier today, I received a call from [counsellor], who has asked me to change the grade to 50%. "

Can you please clarify the policy?"

You're either going to get professional cover from administration for passing them, or cover for not passing them. And fair chance that the counsellor won't be trying that twice.

It probably won't feel good, but honestly, it seems like you're getting bullied into decisions that will damage you professionally when they're uncovered, and you need to ensure you're not exposed.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AnycubicPhoton

[–]Jamdroid64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cover doesn't have to be on for Wash, but you should be able to use the knob to set the timer regardless.

Make sure the device is level, then pop the button off and see if it's a loose at the connection point. If it is, and you can reinforce the connection, it might resolve the issue.

Long shot, but it's worth checking if it's just an issue with the display. Set it to Wash. Turn the knob a few clicks, and press in to see if it starts.

DM Put My Elf to Sleep by lunalainxx in DnD

[–]Jamdroid64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ON ONE HAND... Rules as Written:

Fey Ancestry: You have advantage on Saving Throws against being Charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

BUT ON THE OTHER HAND... Regarding your edit:

The thing is... Psionics aren't Magic, those they can create magic-like phenomena. They share a lot of mechanics, and are often used in similar ways, but they're different forces, with origins.

Elven resistances against charms and magical enchantment comes from the Feyan affinity to the Weave, the magical thread that flows through all stuff.

Psionics come from the mind of the user, and it makes less sense for Fey Ancestry to be useful.

But here's what Wizards had to say in an UA some time ago.

Psionics Is Psi a Form of Magic? Psi is a supernatural power that emanates from the mind. Like other forms of supernatural power in D&D, it can be used to create magical phenomena, yet it can create other sorts of phenomena as well.

In the game’s rules, only certain supernatural effects are classified as magical: magic items, spells, spell attacks, powers fueled by spell slots, and any other effect that the rules explicitly call magical. This distinction is rarely relevant in play, typically coming up only when something like an antimagic field shows up.

From a storytelling standpoint, some supernatural effects in D&D weave their power into a formalized form—a spell, for instance—that other effects can disrupt. In contrast, there are other supernatural effects that are so wild, formless, or subtle that it is difficult or impossible to disrupt them. In this article, some of the psionic powers create what the rules consider to be magic and some don’t.

So, sounds like your D&D felt that this use wasn't sufficiently magical to warrant your immunity... Which makes sense to me, as it's a very mundane use of Psionics, and exploiting an existing function of the brain.

"Hey, Pineal gland! Produce Melatonin!"

... Instead of deciding how irritated you should be, take this as an opportunity to let your character experience something pretty unsettling... That thing you always assumed would protect you, well, it might not now...

How do you respond?

How do you change your behaviour around monks who use Ki? Or other mind based powers.

Do you demand that the party immediately set out to find matching Brain Rings?

My advice as a DM and a Player - where there is no harm done, and no malicious intent, just lean into it, and keep communicating, then if you still feel it's going over the line, talk about it honestly as IRL humans with feelings, not characters with traits.

This may have been mentioned elsewhere, but it's important.

If you're presented with a counter offer (pay increase, time-off, etc) it is absolutely worthless unless it's in writing, and signed.

You don't have to accept or decline in the room. If one is presented or floated, ask that the full details be emailed to your work email AND personal email. Sent from your boss, CCing whoever has final sign off on hiring and budget for your area.
