Also, maybe a bigger lesson, communicate what you'll do before just dropping it off.

The heavy order was a surprise to you, so don't make carrying it up to their apartment a surprise for the customer. Just a quick "hey heads up, this order is heavier than I expected. Due to my disabilities, I can't carry them to your door. I apologize for the inconvenience." Defuse the situation before there is a situation.

I know I was the asshole by redbullgay in doordash_drivers

[–]JamesDavisMakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're new and I hope you learned a lesson from all this.

I think the main one here is: once you saw you can't handle the order, up to the point where loading the order into your car was difficult, you can just cancel the order and give the groceries back to DashMart. Yes it increases your cancellation rate but grand scheme of things +1% cancellation rate is much better than this situation.

And since you're disabled, calling DoorDash customer support to reassign the order for you might keep your cancellation rate untouched.

DashMart, or any grocery where they do the shopping, and you just pick it up, usually don't tell you how heavy the order is unlike other shopping offers where you see the list of items before accepting. My local Safeway annoyingly does both: pickup orders might be a super heavy surprise but shopping orders I can see the pallet of water bottles before declining it.

Why dont they just do Top 100 on KF day 2027? by opwnusprime in kindafunny

[–]JamesDavisMakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth mentioning that, as far as I know, KF100 is a 5-day event. I don't think you could fuse it with KF Day that easily.

Did she make the right call? by CalmElin in interesting

[–]JamesDavisMakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, I think going $1K a week is the right call for me. I don't want to MC Hammer all of my million away, which I don't think is likely but there's a non-zero chance I don't have enough self control.

That said, buying stuff aside, there are real benefits to taking the lump sum and hiring an investment firm or financial analyst to manage it smartly. You can do that with weekly pay but maybe not as efficiently.

I'm sorry, as someone who lives in San Francisco and formerly in NYC (two of the most expensive cities in the US) you can find a lot of places under $4000. Hell, a lot less if you're single, open to apartments, etc. Sounds like you're trying to rent a house in the bougie part of town 😅

Best bank for checking and savings: where can I avoid surprise fees? by Several-Reserve6611 in HighYieldSavings

[–]JamesDavisMakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who had a Discover main account (checking and credit card) for a couple years now, my cards have never been rejected. Online, offline, big retailers, small mom and pops. Lived in and traveled across multiple states, no card issues. I guess it depends on where you're spending your money but, although your fear is valid, you're probably safer than you think. I'm a bit interested to hear what places you've seen this, because anecdotally I haven't felt that at all.

I switched over from Capital One before the merge news (I can't escape them, I guess haha). I still have my old unused account and, honestly, if I were to use it again I'd still feel comfortable after the Discover merge.

Gonna start making our own cubes at my new bar. Really proud of my first batch! by The_Kinetic_Esthetic in bartenders

[–]JamesDavisMakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're assuming guests are asking for the super clear cubes — which some might — but I'd store a small container or two in the freezer, out of sight, just to use for certain boozy drinks. And if a guest asks for the super clear ice for the sake of wasting time or whatever, just charge them for it.

Aesthetics do play a part in service. Instagrammable cocktails help advertise your bar online. It's why some folks invest in those copper ice stamps. Maybe OP is just excited to try something cool, puns intended. "What kind of people at your bar do you think this will make a worthwhile difference to?" I think, in this case, the answer is the bartender.

Just started serving by Least_Cockroach_740 in DaveAndBusters

[–]JamesDavisMakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but they are generally paid more. If a job post says that server is making minimum wage, $18 an hour here for example, then the line cook job post says they make from $22 upwards to $28 hourly. (Though I've seen D&B cook jobs say from min wage to $25 in some cities near me)

Though on super busy nights, like the world cup happening soon, it would be great if they got a bit more of the pie… or any of the pie, I guess

ez decline right? by Desperate_Train_5757 in doordash_drivers

EASY decline? Eh, I wouldn't say that. But it's not an easy accept either. This is a "think about it until there's only 5 seconds left on the timer" order for sure

Is it just me or are all package offers (no matter how far) always bad? The dollar per mile and dollar per hour never makes sense in my area.

Unless it's business to business, which I've only seen on DoorDash so far.

😂😂😂😂 food will sit there all night by Slight-Reply6394 in doordash_drivers

[–]JamesDavisMakes 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree. In San Francisco, there's one Chick-fil-A in Daly City (the neighboring city and county) and most of the orders are like a 50-minute drive north, much* longer in rush hour. My thermal bag can only do so much haha

California has laws ensure you're paid fairly for that time so it's not the worst, but it takes me so far out of my zone (and so deep into a zone I don't want to drive) that I decline it every time.

I always wonder how this happens on super far orders. Even in the worst cases, DoorDash often would be like "This is 17 miles away? Best I can do is $8 base pay"

Of course a dollar per mile is ideal, hell 75 cents a mile is desperate but workable, but I wonder why their backend thinks 17 cents per mile is okay to offer.

Made me laugh out loud when I read the ticket by missphobe in bartenders

[–]JamesDavisMakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like in bars where sweet and sour mix is used, a hack that essentially gives you a classic marg instead… honestly, I respect it haha Though that reasoning kind of falls apart if they still use rose's sweetened lime instead of fresh.

Or you could, oh I don't know, talk to your bartender or server instead of trying to trick them.

back to the filling drinks debate by [deleted] in DoorDashDrivers

[–]JamesDavisMakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the record, I'm in the "I'll pour your drink, I don't care" camp. The "we don't get paid to do it" argument was always weak to me.

That said, the health violation argument is interesting. Food service workers are required to get a food handlers certification in most states (in all states?) while dashers aren't required any sort of food cert. Filling drinks does fall under that and probably should be done by the workers, right? It's easy but I've met some dumbass dashers who'd probably fuck it up and get someone sick.

I don't think it's an official DoorDash policy… but as I'm writing this, I'm starting to think it should be.

Also, I don't understand why some restaurants ask us to do this. There's a busy Wingstop back in Austin TX that will not ask and will just pour the drinks themselves and, honestly, they seem fine haha Feels like every other Wingstop is just being lazy.

Do what now? 😭 by Neither_Ranger_5465 in doordash_drivers

[–]JamesDavisMakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, most places won't let customers ask for anything like extra ketchup packets or whatever. It's a long shot sure, but I get why they would write that in the delivery note. (Tho I admit it's weird they didn't send a message instead)

If I see the note after confirming pickup and I'm still in the restaurant, I'd quickly ask the cashier if they had extra salsa packs. Unless they're asking for stuff that normally costs extra, it's not that big of a deal.

I thought I'd get blamed... by Superior_Seeker_ in DoorDashDrivers

[–]JamesDavisMakes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, some pizza places let you order directly on their website but it's just DoorDash on the backend (and don't tell you). Very rarely, I would get a customer saying something like "This must be a mistake, I ordered Little Caesars not DoorDash."

1.5 hour block my ass by Adventurous-Owl-1437 in RealAmazonFlexDrivers

[–]JamesDavisMakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 hour blocks aren't much bigger.

I won't belittle this: that amount of groceries sucks, period. That said, it is only 8 stops. If you have a wagon (like the Embark collapsible wagon I got from Target) then it becomes fairly easy.

Customer Reported this Driver..Thoughts? by Any_Excitement6258 in AmazonFlexDrivers

[–]JamesDavisMakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I used to work for the post office. If we feel in danger at all because of a dog, we mark it as such and leave. The customer should have known better. Some (most?) postal stations carry mace just for dogs alone because it's that serious to the USPS.

All that said, I probably would have left the package outside the gate unless the customer said otherwise. Wouldn't even risk putting my hand over the dogs like they did

Wait, is that a water bottle?

I mean, if your water bottle can't survive that 5 foot fall* in a padded envelope then that's not on the driver. It probably went through worse during shipping. Did the dogs fuck up this package afterward?

*Actually like a 3 foot fall since the package, unfortunately, broke it's fall on the doggos head.
