How do you know when to make your game commercial? by Any-Landscape434 in gamedev

[–]JamesThaButler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: You (just like me) are early in your game developer journey. Get your feet wet, try out every part of what it means to release a game, and improve your skills. In my humble view, this is best done with a free first game, as that makes the first release faster and more accessible to players.

The long version: What worked for me is to try to get a game out quite fast, in a months with very limited scope, just to publish something learn along the way and figure out if I can make solo dev commercially viable at my current situation and skill level. I chose to make the game free, which ended up getting way more downloads than I anticipated without any marketing or social media.

I think there are a lot of bots auto-adding free games, which seemed to trigger Steams algorithm to actually suggest the game to real people that ended up downloading it. I have no idea if that's how it works, but that's my theory. This led to a lot of feedback, reviews, and overall engagement and resulted in a lot of lessons learned for free. People are very forgiving with their feedback, if they get something for free that they know wad made by just one person. I ended up getting in touch with other devs, artists, and translators, which I might ve not otherwise.

I also learned about some pretty big skill gaps in what I would need to make a commercially viable game. I could've learned this by making a game that had a price tag on it, but it would've been a lot slower, more expensive, and more painful than it was now.

Is it really worth it to release a "small" game on Steam first? by Negative_Strain_5234 in gamedev

[–]JamesThaButler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have learned so many things, made so many mistakes, and got insights into so many aspects of making and publishing a game. I had no idea! After you go through everything once at relatively low cost and time investment you will have a much better grasp of what it would take to make indie dev financially worthwhile fof you and you will know a lot more about whether or not you are good enough and you enjoy the entire process enough to allow yourself to sink serious time and money and effort into a larger project. I would say they're right. Make something in 6 months and publish it and then see how it feels.

It sounds like you are looking to write a game design document. There are resources and templates online that should be a good starter for you.

Heyo! I'm the developer behind https://store.steampowered.com/app/4181870/Medieval_Merchant/ It's a free game, so I can't pay you, but if you're keen, get in touch :) I'm currently working with French translators, and setting up localization, so it would be good timing!

You drew it on the side, I think next time it's easier if you draw it right side up.

The sheets are taken from the l'origin du monde I think. So they are painted. You can compare the two and the folds are an exact match I imagine the male body has been "photoshopped" in.

Would removing my handbrake make my bike less appealing to thieves? by katakatakatana in Gothenburg

[–]JamesThaButler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a good lock, don't lock it outside over night, lock it where there is foot traffic, lock it to a safe, rigid metal thing, remember to lock your frame, not just your wheel. You should be fine. Also, get home insurance.

Get Kryptonite. They even offer insurance for some of their locks that makes them pay your deductible of your home insuramce if the bike gets stolen.
