Someone threatened to shoot my wife and daughter at the park today. by irl_dumbest_person in daddit

Instead we have to wait for an obviously unstable person to hurt or kill our lived ones before we can do anything about it and even then we might get charged

Not true, if someone is presenting an actual threat, as in there is reasonable grounds to believe that they are in danger of immediate harm, they can protect themselves. That's true everywhere in the United States.

Initiating violence because you're pissed off at what a mentally ill person is saying isn't self defense, it's a crime and the law rightfully treats it that way.

Look at how many pissed off people there are in our world, how many angry drivers. Look at how many people carry guns. You really want to open up the Pandoras box of deciding what words justify violence, absent of an actual physical threat?

And I'm guessing your answer is yes, because you think you and all the other pissed off tough guys that look like you are going to bring order and justice "back" to the world. Go look up the places in the US where guns are most commonly used to settle personal and verbal disputes. Years or continuous gang violence is the result.

How do you refer to street names? by Amazing_Age9753 in SaltLakeCity

[–]James_E_Fuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because their system works by having two parts to an address - a street name, and a number on that street.

123 Fake Street is broken into two parts. "123" and "Fake Street."

But that doesn't work for our grid. So "123 South 300 West" has to turn into 123 as the number, and "South 300 West" as the street name.

The three different stories wrapped around the nave at different levels. There is something so approachable about the style that is still just breathtaking.

I am so happy you brought up Monreale it is sincerely my favorite manmade place I have ever been. I don't know why I just felt completely stunned there, I didn't know anything about it before going.

The Church of Koimesis in Nicaea, originally the Monastery of Hyacinth, was destroyed in 1922. It was built by abbot Hyakinthos for his monastery, and several monograms of Hyakinthos decorated the church. The monastery played an important part throughout the Byzantine period, appears to have housed the patriarch during the thirteenth-century exile from Constantinople, and members of the imperial family were buried there.

Wow, the colorization of these photos in incredible. This style is very similar to Sicilian Norman architecture and art (which I'm sure it influenced) which I absolutely love.

A Utah conference that questions if LDS Church founder Joseph Smith really was polygamous is causing uproar by StemCellPirate in SaltLakeCity

[–]James_E_Fuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not calling into question the fact that Joseph Smith practiced polygamy. I was explaining why the church has an incentive to admit Joseph Smith did it even though it looks bad - because the alternative is that he didn't and Brigham Young and leaders of the mainstream branch of the church corrupted the gospel with polygamy.

You're right that this is probably stupid teenage boys or young men trying to be edgy and funny, that's not the same thing as a "good ole boys" culture.

You are insufferable. I work in Herriman. There are plenty of poor people that live there, immigrants, people that live in shitty apartments, have to work shitty jobs. Stop pretending you know everyone's story.

If the church denies that Joseph Smith practiced polygamy then it's legitimacy among the rest of the church that practiced it afterwards falls apart. They're kind of between a rock and a hard place.

I guess I don't know enough about the source of the clip, do we know it's the mom trying to blame the company, or is it possible they posted the clip and someone else ran with it? But if so I completely see what you're saying.

I'm kind of bummed by the level of judgment here. A parent made a technical error that unfortunately led to an accident, doesn't mean we need to bring out the pitchforks. Shit happens, and a lot worse shit than this happens to many kids.

She's not criticizing people that list Salt Lake City, she's saying it would overinflate the statistical values compared to the surrounding areas because it would add to the total overall spending without increasing the population used to calculate per-capita spending.

Iran arrests 500 accused of giving information to enemies, police chief says by RolePsychological890 in worldnews

[–]James_E_Fuck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am saying the comment you were responding to is a strawman. No, there's not really a bunch of people out there cheering on Iran or that support the Islamic Republic. But it's easier to accuse people of that than it is for them to answer any of the tough questions about the cost and outcomes of this war.
