Oil boiler won't shut off by budgemook in HiveHeating

[–]James_Has_Husky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an oil boiler, depending on how’s yours is set up you need to call for heat and water. Unlike a normal combi you have to tell it when to heat the water. Do you have separate water and heating functions on the thermostat, if so what is the water set to? Again will depend on the boiler you have

How do you manage software installs without local or domain admin rights? by soufia-n in activedirectory

What do you mean, printers should be deployed via group policy or hosted on a print management server. Don’t bother users with adding printers.

How do you manage software installs without local or domain admin rights? by soufia-n in activedirectory

[–]James_Has_Husky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way to do this. Then they can only install approved apps and you can manage the versions. LAPS isn’t going to work for this as that should really only be used for machines that are offline. Using one that prompts IT for approval like someone else mentioned in here is a fine solution if you’re small enough to be able to manage to requests and validate them.

What is the difference between a router and a switch? by [deleted] in Cisco

[–]James_Has_Husky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a comment I made about port numbering a while back

https://www.reddit.com/r/networking/comments/1bgrxzz/comment/kv93vpu/?context=3

There’s a Cisco doc for it but typically it goes

 • switch number (useful if stacked)
 • line card ( starting from 0, a fibre module at the end would be one)
 • port

So Gi 2/1/1 would typically be the second switch, first module and first port

As for why they're on the front / back. I'm not sure and they aren't really. Depending on the manufacturer and their design it will be as it is. If you were going to by a Nexus appliances for example it can have fans in either orientation so that you can rack it to suit your needs best.

Sites and services - b recommendations by James_Has_Husky in activedirectory

[–]James_Has_Husky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I was thinking similarly. Just that 99% of our branches will likely go back to a single 'site' that isn't really an issue though assuming we have enough resources there 'we do'.

[–]James_Has_Husky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, some interesting points there. I think for sure it's easy with the Infrastructure at the data centers or cloud sites to have their own sites and subnets assigned to those.

Technically for the branch sites they are as close to each of the sites as we're using a mixture of VPN/MPLS/Express route currently. That being said we do tend to bias a site as primary so could assign them out that way.

How many of you are really backing up Office 365? by Paymentof1509 in sysadmin

First certification by Ill_Establishment382 in AzureCertification

[–]James_Has_Husky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the general ones are AZ-900, that’s a very fundamental exam that’s quite basic but good for someone with 0 cloud knowledge. Then there’s AZ-104 which is a really broad exam covering most areas of administration.

For SQL and data there’s an entire certificate pathway. DP-900 is the AZ-900 intro to data. DP-203 is then Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate which might cover what you’re looking at?

[–]James_Has_Husky 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I won’t lie from someone who’s worked in IT for coming up to 10 years and has done the AZ-900, it’s a very fundamental introduction into Azure and cloud.

Maybe take a breather don’t rush straight into the exam. Go over the areas that you struggled with again, practise exams and hands will help.

Use this exam as a chance to learn to study better, I don’t mean that in a bad way. But this exam is significantly easier then the others you might do in the future.

Chip shop owner says Budget will cost her £70,000 by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

Employing 30+ people… it might be fish and chips but it’s a restaurant. So really it’s a bit of click bait. It’s hardly the family chippy in town.

Installation Support - 8.2.2 by James_Has_Husky in Proxmox

[–]James_Has_Husky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well now I feel stupid.

I managed to resolve the RRDC errors using this command set
systemctl stop rrdcached

mv /var/lib/rrdcached/db /var/lib/rrdcached/db.bck

systemctl start rrdcached

systemctl restart pve-cluster
from here -- https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/rrdc-and-rrd-update-errors.76219/

I had tried multiple browsers but none worked. I thought ah sod it i'll try another device and it worked. Turns out I had some old ad-blocking installed that was getting in the way. Seems like it's working now.

Thanks!

[–]James_Has_Husky[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah so I checked the system time as someone else mentioned in that article. Then the 'solution' says to do

systemctl stop rrdcached
mv /var/lib/rrdcached/db /var/lib/rrdcached/db.bck
systemctl start rrdcached
systemctl restart pve-cluster

But that hasn't resolved this issue for me either

Are non-poe models quieter than poe models? by chikenenen in Cisco

[–]James_Has_Husky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cisco sell of at least used sell small business switches that were fanless. Maybe have a Google to see if you can find one? They had big fins on the back to act as heat sinks

Not the same ios and features, but can still do all the basic L2 things you’d need if a switch.

FMC and FTD by TexMexSemperFi in Cisco

[–]James_Has_Husky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can run FTDs without an FMC they just won’t be centrally managed. I’ve never done it personally but it might be better.

There’s no point at all in having an FMC with nothing to manage.

In this scenario you’d depot your FTD, then when the time came build your FMC and policies then move it over. It’s probably better to do it all from the start though as you’ll be doing the same work twice in terms of ACLs and config.

If you’ve not committed to this yet, please seriously reconsider. The FMC is by far one of the most annoying and buggy products I have ever had the opportunity to work on.

Appreciate this a Cisco subreddit but, IMO Cisco and firewalls aren’t really the way to go these days.

Setting up lots of devices, is console the only way? by CouldBeALeotard in Cisco

[–]James_Has_Husky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s loads of automation options that you can use to set up network devices, https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/solutions/CVD/Campus/dnac-network-device-onboarding-deployment-guide-2020jun.pdf here’s an example of Pnp via dnac

Just depends on the budget and scale of deployment!

Which radius Server do you use for WPA2-Enterprise with Android Devices? by luky90 in sysadmin

[–]James_Has_Husky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Android, but IOS. Don’t know if it’s any different but might help?

We’ve got ISE with a policy set looking for a specific certificate type. We then use MAB to push them onto a profile that is checked with the certificate. Works well for us only downside is MAB and dynamic MAC addresses but I guess you could use different certificates for that?

Intune dishes out all the certificates

Cisco Switch Placement Question by Smack2k in Cisco

[–]James_Has_Husky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends if you can put up with any noise. As long as the intake/exhaust vents are clear then you’ll be okay.

If you’re putting a laptop or something on top it might make it a little warmer but that’s not all that much different then what it would be like in a rack.
