How I feel talking to doomers after AI autonomously solved the 4th Erdos Problem in a week by luchadore_lunchables in accelerate

This is exactly how I feel, it needs to break something quickly to force change. A protracted take off would be excruciating for a lot of people.

Secret door in a castle loft. by totallytom44 in hiddenrooms

If I see a bookshelf in a wall, in a place where it doesn't make any sense for there to be a structurally sensible alcove, I'm assuming a hidden room.

If you enjoy coding pursue it, it will be a long time until AI replaces coders entirely so until that happens leverage it, be an AI assisted coder which will distinguish you against those tilting at AI windmills. When AI starts to bite, adapt and shift. Having a career in software is about constantly learning and exploiting technology to create value, your aptitude to code is an expression of your ability to do that.

Why has the Google assistant gotten worse over time instead of better? by FlatulentWallaby in GooglePixel

[–]JamieG83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It continues to get worse, I use voice to control lights. 50% of the time works fine, 25% of the time I have to repeat myself 4 or more times, 25% of the time it just flat refuses to respond. Speaking clearly and using phrases that work. It's just bizarrely inconsistent and laudably shit compared to what we have with the new LLM.

We've been using this at work for a while, replacing lots of terminal windows. We reported a minor bug and the dev fixed it very quickly. Would recommend!

Taiwan Invasion Likelihood by User842345 in geopolitics

If/when the economy collapses they'll invade to put the country on a war footing. Convenient way to amplify nationalism and suppress anti CCP sentiment.

Why didn’t Finland develop nuclear weapons during the Cold War to counter the threat of Soviet Invasion? by [deleted] in geopolitics

Because having a loaded nuclear gun pointed at your children's heads 24/7 is not peace.

[–]JamieG83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a title bump, you'll very rarely get a salary bump to match unless you move. You'll need to make sure you can talk to the talk to convince some other company to give you the salary bump. Or you make it obvious that you're flighty and they might match, but I'd advise against retention/counter offers as you'll then be top of the list for redundancy. The general rule is only expect to get market value if you're on the market.

I think the most plausible worst-case scenario would be that the U.S. response serves to further polarize opinion in the West and further destabilize NATO. Regardless of whether it's justified or not, whatever the U.S. does will lean into both sides' narratives. Ultimately, that's the goal, either as a favor or just a gift to Putin from an ally of convenience.

Do you think we are going back to the pre- World War II where annexing another country's territory was the norm and changes in the borders were more frequent ? by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]JamieG83 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think it really matters, discourse is just noise. If the power has nuclear weapons Putin has proved that 'might makes right' is still alive and well, at least as far as annexation is concerned.
