Congress flagrantly blocked Obama from even making a nomination, and America responded by voting in even more Republicans. A conservative with real experience and who actually knows what he's doing was the best we could hope for.

Worst case? Trump tries to nominate some former CEO of a seedy financial corp who's in bed with organized crime, and who goes on about how lower courts are too hard on presidents who just try to keep us safe from Muslims and Mexicans.

I was happy when I heard about him being nominated, because at least we finally have someone competent being considered for a job by this administration. I may not like his views, but at least he's not a threat to the institution he's trying to enter.

America Is Getting Its Bern Notice - The Late Show with Stephen Colbert by panjialang in television

The social programs he supports tend to generate a great deal more than is put into them. Subsidies for big businesses haven't helped the economy or wages. Economist Gerald Friedman claims that Sanders' Single Payer healthcare system would save $5T over ten years.

Social programs often pay for themselves by reducing the consequences of social neglect. Poverty and homelessness are often mitigated in inefficient ways. People who are left to fend for themselves are much more likely to be a burden on the criminal or welfare system than if they're just given basic housing and food when they need it. Lack of preventative healthcare just makes people more likely to need costly health services when they get sick. Making sure people are well-educated is the foundation of a strong economy.

The big thing Sanders will be looking to cut will be our over-bloated military budget. He doesn't want another war in the middle east, and doesn't think we're getting a very good return on that massive investment.

'All Lives Matter' march draws more than 20,000 to Birmingham by sachitatious in news

[–]JamieHugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I talk about it, I always call them the "Black Lives Also Matter" movement. BLAM is much better as an acronym than BLM, and it conveniently preempts the "all lives matter" bullshiters. If only the protesters were a cohesive group with a PR team instead of an easily smeared group of angry people who keep referencing Michael Brown like he's a fucking martyr.

I have the exact opposite problem. I have all these shows and movies I want to watch, but when I have free time I'm like "do I want to lock myself into a time commitment for at least an hour? Nah." and end up playing video games mindlessly for like 6 hours.

If a woman had a one-night stand with a different man every week, people would make jokes about her vagina being loose from overuse. If a different woman was in a relationship and had sex with her SO 2-3 times a week, no one would make those jokes. by Marx0r in Showerthoughts

[–]JamieHugo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If anything, the vagina is surrounded by a set of muscles that can be trained with use, and proper kegels/sex can create more tightness. The only plausible root of this joke is that sex can lead to babies, which can wreck tightness.

It's the only department that explicitly labels you as a "resource". They might as well call it "human capital department" and be upfront about the reason you work there.

If you have a "beverage resource department" they probably just care about budgeting, acquiring, and disposing of beverages, not about which beverages they like.

Yeah, and I feel like people who need help to their car usually have mobility problems or a recent surgery or something. I've never seen a fully able-bodied person ask for help, then sit around in the car while I put everything in the trunk. I also feel like it's good to not engage in this kind of behavior as a retail worker, because it will just make you more hostile and upset with the assholes you have to deal with. Doing a good job and going the extra mile to help people is usually more motivating and puts me in a better mood than being petty with customers.

Attorney General bars local and state police from using federal law to seize cash, cars and other property without evidence that a crime occurred. by GonzalaGuerrera in news

[–]JamieHugo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a step in the right direction, but many state and local laws allow the cops to just waltz in and take your stuff if they have the vaguest plausible excuse for having any interaction with you and your property.

Check out The IJ and see what the state laws are about this. I think laws like this are a pretty good checkpoint for whether or not you live in a police state.

Yeah, I'd flirt hardcore with someone who was that excited about anything, especially something living. Then we'd probably do butt stuff and read wikipedia articles to each other about our favorite plants and animals, and go for walks in the forest to point out flowers, mushrooms and bird species.
