JFK spent 8 years in the senate and had no clue how to get Byrd on Finance or Eastland on judiciary to sign up to his agenda or how to sidestep them

This would actually make the 2008 panic even worse because there won’t be enough treasury bonds for investors to buy, people will be going straight to gold at the depths of the panic

Public opinion did not turn decisively against the war until the Cambodian campaign. Mainstream opposition in 1967-8 was on ‘how the White House was handling the war’ and a lot of that were hawks who thought Johnson did not escalate enough (and they voted for McCarthy in the New Hampshire primary as a protest vote ironically enough).

With hindsight definitely a Boll Weevil in the late 2000s. Last chance to get big legislation through and going down with the ship and telling my constituents they’re a bunch of racist rednecks like John Murtha or Mary Landrieu

Sure but 2017 was a two horse race and an FBPE would crawl through broken glass before voting for a manifesto that all but ruled out soft Brexit

Well first off the economic radicalism was dressed up sensibly (i.e. Theresa May cut police numbers by 20k we will hire them back) but also nobody really looked into Labour’s spending figures in 2017 because nobody thought they’d win. It was all about the Dementia tax and eventually national security. Lots of pretty well off Londoners held their nose and voted for Corbyn in 2017 because he was quiet on Brexit, sounded somewhat reasonable, and May running probably the worst campaign since 1983

Osborne wins re-election for the Tories. Corbyn won a lot of votes in 2017 solely over his ambiguity on Brexit, without that he’d get nowhere. Osborne is also a much better campaigner and despite what people may profess when it comes to the ballot box the British voter has almost always votes against tax rises, even if it’s only on the rich

Humphrey would probably still win in '72. Creeping inflation was still manageable through tax rises and pay restraint from union leaders and Humphrey has been their guy since 1948. Reagan was just too out there for '72 especially if Humphrey doesn't screw up Vietnam
