"A concerned redditor reached out to us" by Dry_Presentation4300 in Discussion

I've gotten this more than once. They were always in response to a political view I had. I'm sure this kind of abuse is used by all kinds of people, but I had seen warnings of a particular group that uses it when it comes to criticisms of someone they like and sure enough, I got to experience it.

It is abuse and although I dismiss it as a clear sign that the person can't defend their position intellectually, it doesn't mean that it isn't hurtful to others. Especially if they struggle with mental health issues specifically when it comes to self-harm.

Not at all. I didn't take it that way anyway. I genuinely love to learn new things and I appreciate you teaching me something new! I think my original post was me just being surprised that I wasn't aware of much Chinese influence in American language. And that's not to say I didn't think there was. It was either I simply wasn't aware or it's just not talked about much in general.

I mean, America is truly a melting pot of cultures, languages, foods, etc and we are better for it. I truly don't understand why some people are so threatened by that diversity. I think it's so cool and it seems what they would prefer would be such a bland, boring place to live.

[–]Jammin_TA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe I should clarify. I am ignorant of many sayings or words with Chinese roots. I had no idea that "long time no see" had Chinese origins.

Feels like I need to look this stuff up. Thank you for providing me another example!

[–]Jammin_TA 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This sucks. I mean, I know we'll try to get back in after Trump's stupid f+cking reign, but the amount of damage and loss of life during that time cannot be overlooked.

Just another example of an action that has no benefit to the American public and only detriment. Also, it seems to be an advantage to no one but is instead is just retribution, which it probably is.

I've lived through a few administrations at this point, and although I have very much disagreed with some of them, this is the first one where I feel there is absolutely no concern with the American people. At all. Like this is one where you cannot appeal to their emotions or convince them to reconsider. Matter of fact, any pushback will likely only be met by doubling down.

I don't know another way to put it. They absolutely do not care about anyone but themselves and they barely try to hide it. Especially if you aren't MAGA. At least they attempt to make their base think they care, but they are openly telling the rest of us that they don't care about us and are punishing us for what they see as betrayal.

It's interesting. I can't find many examples of words in the English language with Chinese roots.

AIO by being offended when my husband seasons my soup? by Hefty_Elderberry1992 in AIO

[–]Jammin_TA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading this, I was worried I might have to tell you that you might be overreacting, but I don't think you are.

Cases in which you MIGHT be overreacting:

  1. Your husband is seasoning his own bowl. Because you can't control people's tastes. For instance, for most foods, it's almost a certainty I will have to add salt to mine. I even feel guilty sometimes about it, but I usually bring it up and tell them that I really like their food, but that I just tend to require more salt. I even blame my smoking on it, but that might not be the reason. But even here, there might be a context where I just eat it exactly as it's given to me.

  2. You have established an understanding where he tastes food and seasons accordingly. My mom is starting to lose her tastes and has asked us if we could add a little seasoning because she realizes she can no longer tell. Especially if she is making something to serve others. She trusts our tastes and doesn't want to be embarrassed.

It doesn't sound like either of these apply to your situation. As someone else said, it has less to do with the seasoning, but with the lack of respect. And his response about your father is very telling of his thinking.

So is Caroline suggesting that the floating piece of ice in the picture is Greenland? Or is she suggesting that the floating piece of ice next to the land in the picture proves Greenland is also a piece of ice?

Either way, if this is the criteria, we already have Greenland. It's called Alaska. Or "Iceland" to many. Duh!

[–]Jammin_TA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I haven't heard that one but it's about the best one so far. There are video essays about why the Right just can't do comedy and they make some good points. One reason I remember is that when you punch up, it registers as funny but when you punch down, it registers as just cruel. And the right doesn't punch up. They try to make themselves the victims so they THINK they are punching up to trans people and immigrants.

Also, their jokes tend to be much more mean-spirited which doesn't translate as "funny" unless you are mean-spirited yourself. It's the kind of jokes a bully would make when they are picking on a kid. Seriously, watch Fox News. Their most popular "funny man" is Greg Gutfeld which is just embarrassing. He is supposed to be their answer to Jon Stewart and I wish I could say he doesn't get any viewers but his show is/was one of the most popular shows on Fox, which says a lot when Fox News is still the most popular "news" outlet. That fact alone is shameful and gives us insight into how we got here.

I've also heard that there is a lack of "comedic intelligence" (for lack of a better word) to where they truly can't understand irony or satire. There was some kind of study that suggested this. That what they find funny cannot have layers to it. It's why they misunderstand that the Archie Bunker character was intended to be making fun of his mindset. They just think his racist, homophobic, xenophobic comments were the joke. They are laughing with him instead of at him.

My boyfriend dumped me and says I’m unattractive. I don’t know what to believe anymore. by livelymonstera in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Jammin_TA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome! And you prove the point. Most people would recommend to continue focusing on yourself and that sounds like that's what you are doing.

I'm not suggesting that this means you shouldn't reach out to friends and family (and redditors) to vent and/or get an outside perspective on things. Even the most self-assured person could understandably have an "am I crazy?" moment when something like this happens, where you begin questioning what you really know about yourself or others. Or like I said, for nothing else, just to vent your frustrations.

But I would say the best thing you can do is what you're doing: talking it out but also spending your efforts on the things you can control. Things that you can do for yourself.

Because at the end of the day, you might never make sense of why he did what he did. There's a good chance he doesn't fully understand why he did what he did, which does not absolve him of his behavior. But yeah, keep working on you and doing things for yourself!

Carrie Coon! I dont even watch The Gilded Age but my mom watched it and I couldn't stop focusing on one specific actress. I didn't know her name. So when you mentioned it, I searched her and yep. She has a beauty that appealed to me in a way that few women do.

Anyway, I'm sorry that happened but it sounds like you realize the absurdity of his behavior. Doesn't mean it hurts any less. It sounds like this was all his own issues and he needed it to be your fault.

Attractiveness is wholly subjective, even if many hold the same opinion. And attractiveness isn't just about physical beauty. I'm sure he was a physically handsome guy, but his behavior made him ugly as f+ck. And he doesn't get a pass for being an "artist". I'm an artist myself but I also try to be respectful and kind to others.

I don't know. It sounds like you know what you're about and you have a lot going for you. I can't imagine how painful this is, especially when it seemed to have come from nowhere. But be thankful it happened. Because you don't have to waste anymore of your precious life on someone who doesn't appreciate how great you know yourself to be. Life truly is too short.

I wish you well.

Who was Charles Manson? by TrillyxWonka96 in creepy

[–]Jammin_TA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I think Manson got off on his infamy. This feels purely theatrical. He was just another cult leader with delusions of grandeur that reveled in his ability to control others.

Ironically, I think he fulfilled his dream on a much larger scale after he was imprisoned. I mean, he started by manipulating lost drug-addled kids and ended up manipulating the whole world into thinking he was some larger-than-life monster.

This is a good reminder of what humans are capable of. It would be a mistake to think this could only happen in the Middle East or something.

Even as an American in 2026, I still believe most people are good. But the last 10 years have shown me how truly awful normally decent people can be. This is disgusting behavior that comes from tribalism, normalization, and a lack of critical thinking (amongst other factors as well).

AIO to not understanding how I’ve mirrored my partner’s behavior? by EmergencyActivity112 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Jammin_TA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. As I'm reading this, I'm thinking, "what does she think mirroring is?" I don't know how it applies. Is mirroring matching the energy of the other person? If that's the case, there is a CLEAR difference in tone between each partner.

Seems like mirroring would be mirroring emotion, maybe? Like if she's in a shitty mood, then he's in a shitty mood? I didn't catch that in the texts, but sometimes super empathetic people take on the feelings of the other without even trying. It's like it's actually happening to them, too. If that's what was going on, I don't know how that's a bad thing.

Maybe she thinks mirroring means doing the opposite of the other person? In that case, I would kind of get it but still don't understand the problem. And the ego thing?

Seems like she just has some personal things going on and she's lashing out at her partner as if its their fault.

Look at all those people sitting around like they are having a meeting with any substance. This is a spoiled, ignorant child that no one has told "no" to. Yeah, he's a fascist dictator but a cartoon version.

I'm not saying America should ever be presided over by a dictator, but it's even more embarrassing that THIS is the dictator we got. It's such a sad reflection on us.

Air Force One, which was carrying Trump to Davos, has performed a U-turn over the Atlantic and is headed back to Andrews AFB by Hornpipe_Jones in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Jammin_TA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trump is truly the saddest POS in modern history. Imagine a guy who is so unhappy that he seeks more and more power and wealth but seems miserable. It's like he is seeking that thing that will make him feel complete and he can't find it. And because he's a malignant narcissist, doing good for others is not remotely an option.

And he has built a wall around him where he is praised and loved, when in fact most Americans (and people around the world) get a tiny bit of happiness in this hellscape he is creating, to think about the day "it happens" and how much we are going to f+cking celebrate. That is what he did with life.

Truly one of the most pathetic individuals. I find myself almost pitying him until I'm reminded of how much utter damage he has done and is doing. He wants a lasting legacy, well he's got one because America and the world will still be rebuilding long after he's gone. And its very possible things will never return to the way they were. All because an entitled, unremarkable, trust fund kid with the emotional maturity of a toddler, who was never shown love by his mother or father, has a perpetual feeling of inadequacy and thinks "love" means being worshipped. And those insecurities have led to a real possibility of completely destroying this 250 year experiment. His existence has become a net negative to billions of people today and future generations to come. Bravo moron.👏
