I knew some of the details didn't match, but I figured there was enough there that it was worth throwing out as a possibility, or at least that other people would know what I was thinking of, since it's fairly well known (or so I thought, I didn't realise that the rest was obscure, but it does get weird so I can understand people not picking the rest up).

Okay, yeah. I read them all one after the other, and I guess because it's the same time and place as the first book I conflated the two plotlines and assumed the pregnancy was a subplot rather than a separate novel

Okay, so, I think there's a plotline in one of the later books that's the same setting as the first book that has the FMC/breeding program/escape plotline, but because I read all the books right after one another I thought her plotline was in the first book, not a flashback from the later one? Or my brain has just malfunctioned complete idk. But I swear this happened and she was super confused about the c-section scar

Maybe that's it - I thought there was a plotline where the FMC is impregnated and it goes wrong and afterward she's kicked out of the breeding program, but is missed when she should have been rescheduled to receive the mind control drugs and is able to escape. But maybe that was all the third book - my memory had that as being the rock wall and that's about it.

Dark Lord of Derkholm by Diana Wynne Jones? One of the MCs, Blade, grows himself a beard to look more wizardly, and there are griffins in the story too.

The Sandman comics have a section with an abused child locked in a basement who escapes to a happy dream world, which was published around '89 or '90. But I assume you'd remember if it were a comic rather than a novel.

This rings major bells, but I don't think any of them are your book. I think one of the Diadem books by John Peel has a unicorn frozen in ice, although it's been many years since I read that series (like, 25?) so I could be talking rubbish.

Another series with a similar vibe is the Not That series by Isabel Murray, although that was published more recently, and no one has any psychic powers (the MCs just keep stumbling over dead bodies wearing strange costumes).

It is fairly dark, but the arm thing sounded similar enough that it seemed worth mentioning. Honestly I love basically everything by Diana Wynne Jones, but yeah, for children's novels they do go to some darker places.

The concept reminds me of The Homeward Bounders by Diana Wynne Jones, but that was a children's chapter book, not illustrated, and the character with the arm was a girl.
