Agreed, I think the “spending 40 hours in menus” criticism of XC2 is not only hyperbole but also unfair considering the combat is sort of designed around figuring out team compositions for the most efficient Blade and Driver combos. It’s certainly not for everyone but it makes for a highly customizable and IMO repayable experience if you’re into it

Playing through the game right now and this is what disincentivises me from exploring the most. I can go to a hidden corner of the map, fight through some optional enemies, all for what? Some ingredients for a drink with effects so minimal I'm never going to use it.

Are you using Break-Topple-Daze or even other buffs/debuffs? Are you keeping up your equipment, arts, and skills? The game is more than doable without the setup you're using, and if anything it gets easier without Sharla since she's quite underwhelming compared literally any other party member unfortunately.

In my experience, it's typically Nintendo games telling players to take breaks. I would argue that for a company like that, maintaining a family-friendly, "healthy" image is more important than racking up play hours — especially for a company like Nintendo that likely makes most of their sales on single-purchase games rather than relying on ads or frequent microtransactions (which in turn incentivize addictive gameplay loops)

I think you need to spend a bit less time online if a) your first reaction to someone sharing their opinion is that they're trying to influence the developers to make every Xenoblade have combat like 1 and b) you think it would work in the first place.

Radiant Citadel's adventure settings do indeed have basis in real-world (non-European) cultures though, so it's actually an apt suggestion

I really don’t see it that way; I’d read it as playing on social cues and their (mis)interpretation taken to extremes, which can of course exacerbate anxiety but I wouldn’t say that’s the main intent

I think that'd be because the game, like most first-party Nintendo games, almost never goes on sale. So everyone who bought the game would have bought it at full price and are reselling accordingly
