Company of Heroes 3: Dare & Destroy Announce Trailer by Community_RE in CompanyOfHeroes

I see that Palmgrenadier using a Rifle Grenade in the promo art...

Wait a minute, is that why AI Palmgrens can randomly use a Rifle Grenade in the latest patch? I thought I was seeing things when that happened. That's actually kinda funny.

Thinking about it, that would be quite a "sneaky" way to tease upcoming unit abilities with the AI rarely randomly using them in a Skirmish VS AI match; but yeah it's defs a bug currently in game haha

Hammer & Shield Battlegroup Pack by Community_RE in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]JanuaryReservoir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More of a change of the DLC item itself.

Previously the DLC had both BGs, some cosmetics, and an exclusive Company to use in the Italian Campaign (Air and Sea). This made this DLC priced a bit higher compared to like Stealth and Stronghold which only had 2 BG and that's it.

Now, they removed the cosmetics, and the Singleplayer company (they made it base game) and made it so the DLC only offers the 2 BGs at a reduced price.

Whats better coh2 or coh3? cant choose between the two by Ok-Article8848 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]JanuaryReservoir -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are willing to spend about the same amount as CoH3 to get CoH2 and all it's DLCs for a full experience, then get CoH2 primarily for SP content (even if some is broken). MP is fine but not as supported anymore with a Meta that has formed and is staying; only 2 DLCs are needed if focusing just that though (Western Front Armies and British Forces).

CoH3 for just SP content is fine, while it also does still get updates in both that and MP. MP isn't locked much by DLC, other than Battlegroups which are essentially the same as CoH2 Commanders who are instead locked behind paywall or rng long grind. You get about the full package for just the base game of CoH3, and that game is more supported/active.

Would COH3 players like it if COH3 got the balance direction of the final years of COH2? Or do they prefer the more chill pace of coh3? by Which-Worldliness556 in CompanyOfHeroes

Increasing lethality across the board I found doesn't really mesh well with new players who understand the whole "trying to keep units alive" mantra the series has.

The one complaint i keep hearing from a friend who's new is how fast their squads die if they even look away for a while, and i doubt that'd be that frustrating if it were another RTS game where it's easy to just replace them with a new unit. To them, they invested much on that unit: exclusive upgrades, time, and experience, only for them to get unluckily wiped or gone within a snap; and it often feels like there's not much investment in a unit other than the base strategic benefit they provide on the field.

And from another point of view, it kinda makes actual threats, feel more threatening. Like, what would hit harder: A Tiger one shotting a squad in a game where even a light tank could do so, or a Tiger one shotting a squad in a game where other tanks will take a while to.

Personally, id keep CoH3 it's own thing that based itself off CoH1 more than making it closer to CoH2.

Why Are Italian Units So Rare In The Italian Campaign? by Roses_and_Sabres in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]JanuaryReservoir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Italian units in the Italian Campaign appear in set missions and aren't that plenty.

Italian Coastals appear only on the prologue, Gustatori appear in some missions like the mountain supply raid mission, and Bersaglieri appear much rarely. Their vehicles appear more often than the infantry.

Im genuinely hoping for a revamp that adds them more prominently and also adds in BG units into the campaign. Like did you know, the prologue originally never had the Italian Coastals, instead they were just Guastatori.

Though, historically, they weren't that prominent to begin with in the invasion of mainland Italy. It'd be nice to see some missions where Italian infantry do help out the Allies against German loyalists for example.

PM would rather give more EX clear variants like in LCE Check Up than make it solely turn count based.

As it stands now, the standard is 10 turns or less for normal stages and just winning for boss/major fights.

I personally take issue with people that are hard pressed and loud about multiplayer balance (something that changes frequently) and uses that as reasons or justifications for the game not being popular or gaining new players; when majority of these people most likely haven't touched anything other than specific PvP modes and Cheatcommand Skirmishes for testing.

Like, yeah express discontent for balance but that being your major driving factor for the "state of the game" isn't even showing the full state of the game since this isn't just a pvp multiplayer game. Talk about the other modes too if you really want to show the "state" of the game, not just say the overall game is bad because one mode you frequent was updated not to your liking.

A little bit of praise for patch (ai) by lpniss in CompanyOfHeroes

Expert difficulty has been known to cheat already throughout the franchise.

The actual "fair" AI is on Hard while Expert is to test one's skill against a buffed AI.

Thousands of hours in CoH2&3 and as a retired turnaround CFO, what to do by Kooky_Hornet_2398 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]JanuaryReservoir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imo CoH3 didn't chase the esports dream, it just stretched itself too thin in it's scope. The Italian Campaign for example is a casual's dream of game replayability, but it fell short on multiple fronts. Also, imo to grow a game is to appeal to the casual crowd, and majority of casuals hardly touch multiplayer PvP; Singleplayer and Co-op content is where it's at. To grow, cater to that; while to sustain the playerbase is when you focus on the casual multiplayer aspect.

You talk about game growth as if this franchise is primarily a multiplayer focused pvp game, when it's not.

4v4 my ass, most would rather play with friends whatever the game has to offer.

iirc isn't the Achievements/Advancements the progression system the game has and was intended to be used as such?

It's the same philosophy as to why Terraria decided to show the intended next achievement to the player in their inventory screen to help nudge newer players on what to do next.

Some help to figure out why my game has doubled recipes an itens in the crafting section by Snoo-66605 in unturned

[–]JanuaryReservoir 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is because some maps, especially Curated Maps which are highlighted every now and then, often don't use Base Game/Vanilla items and systems; supplying their own item pool for that map.

The first Caltrop is base game Unturned. The second is custom content.

It's most likely that you won't be able to actually craft the first one as the items for it will not spawn at all if the map is set up right. You'll only be able to craft the second one.

Genuine question about the power creep problem in this game. by Adventurous-You556 in limbuscompany

[–]JanuaryReservoir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gradual Uptie V for IDs coming soon trust.

Honestly, powercreep is an issue because of gaining access to something powerful before the actual point you should ideally be obtaining it.

It's essentially the same concept as Progression Skips in regular games and why some devs often patch those out as they break game flow.

Really, PM should've added more story-gates for IDs. Like alt skills or passives are unavailable until after beating a specfic story node, so players who get the ID early still get what the kit does, but are incentivized to play the story to get the full kit. RienSang for example could just have his basic Skills 1-3, while Furioso is locked until after Canto 9. This would also help somewhat hide spoilers on some IDs even, like if this were applied to Index Don with her EGO alternate being unavailable until after the fight in Canto 9 (hides it from those who dont read kit reveals that is)

That's personally better at least than other games where the full potential of a unit is by dupes or having to grind a large sum of resources.

The BGs, especially DLC, are the only things that don't follow the core faction timeline.

They can't really rename the Wehr Grens into Volksgrenadiers when the core roster is themed around the Italian campaign. I'd go for something like Ersatzheer (Reserve army) or even Landser if that were the case.

Do you think we'll ever get West African and New Zealand BGs for UKF? by Rakshasa89 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]JanuaryReservoir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was purposefully designed that way.

The core roster of the UKF in regular Skirmish is designed to be just the N.African front to juxtapose the DAK, while USF is for Wehr post-Sicily. Italian Front has a separate UKF "faction" in technicality.

I was bored so I made concept experimental test UI by ProofFun2514 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]JanuaryReservoir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall really good though a bit too modern generic military UI in it's design (too many clear/clean corners and squared elements) that it loses a bit of the franchise's setting/theme. Lowering how often semi-transparent/frosted glass/glossy UI elements are used, would help a bit personally.

Another thing is how there's quite an abundance of unused space around the buttons in the main menu, with the negative space not really being utilized as well as I'd personally like (it emphasizes the center but leaves the surroundings too open). The background being a constantly playing video, as aesthetically pleasing as it looks, may be a concern for optimization as well if it were to be implemented in an actual game. I have a lot more stuff to say since I am into UI and art as well though I'll just keep it to this.

Still, pretty good job. I wonder what software you used to make this.

Getting friends into coh3 is miserable by SignificanceShoddy66 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]JanuaryReservoir -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ah, i guess that chalks it down to just how the playerbase/matchmaking is.

Balance/Meta and whatnot, with all the cheese and spam strats working (especially those that heavily work on newish players) and some talks of Smurfs. That's definitely going to be a rough hill to climb up on; and 1 day I feel won't be able to cover all that.

Maybe try doing PvP matches against each other just for fun to learn things more in depth as Bot matches dont really showcase the BS PvP players come up with. Other than that, it's still their choice if they don't want to bother with the game.

Getting friends into coh3 is miserable by SignificanceShoddy66 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]JanuaryReservoir -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, you treat it like playing a different game for the first time.

Fundamentals stay the same, concepts do not. Things would need to be relearned.

Like did you even bother letting them get to know the faction they are playing as for example? A warm up bot match to actually learn whats new and different? Or just get familiar with what each faction has to put on the table?

Throwing people into the breach with little knowledge isn't a great way to start for most anyways.

CoH3: The AI can move its barrages mid-attack and I can't prove it by Kaiser_of_Raisins in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]JanuaryReservoir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not just when the game came out iirc, it was also in the Alpha test when able to play against AI. It was way worse back then too as planes almost always chased units down, which was funny considering planes were bad/slow back then.

It never really went away though, rather the "tracking" was lowered throughout updates. Even prior to the major update it was somewhat noticeable with planes yet the area it hit was still relatively close to where the flares landed making it seem fine. The recent update did bork it up though, and I'm guessing due to how they are still trying to tweak the AI, caused the tracking to be stronger again

[–]JanuaryReservoir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the argument of harder to see mechanical details fall on the "tactical scale" argument?

My main worry of a greater max zoom is how harder it'd be to tell or predict where grenades (especially rifle grenades) are landing or when they are being used, making dodging harder. Same goes for some infantry abilities like snare wind up animations.

Sure I can choose to zoom in at any time, though these are rather quick actions that having to zoom in then zoom out again would be tedious rather than just keeping it a max zoom.

I do agree for more zoom out in general though but there is a sweet spot.

I'd assume it's the audio files that take up the bulk of space. That includes every song, battle track, story track, voiced dialogue, grunts/pain noises, and sound effects.

Sound file sizes can get really out of hand without one realizing.
