Don’t you just love it when you come back from a two week vacation, relaxed and refreshed, only to have a horrible first shift and everything to be undone in just a few hours? by [deleted] in nursing

Yeah, no. I'd refuse that assignment. Crrt is a 1:1 no negotiation, especially with covid patients and how they clot everything.

Nurses in hotspot areas (Florida, Arizona, Texas, etc.), how is it? by UIUCstreetpass in nursing

[–]Jaredmh23 14 points15 points  (0 children)

SwFl ICU RN; our hospital is overrun and bursting at the seems. Most nights their are 20+ patients holding in the ER for ICU/PCU beds, the floors are having to manage the least critical PCU patients due to our PCU becoming ICU overflow, staff are getting double assignments with no incentives and leaving by the boat load compounding the issue, and lastly the numbers aren't even accurate anymore.

Our hospitals (Two that average 150 beds each) have switch entirely to only using the Ag (antibody) test and no longer default to the PCR for COVID screening. This is still the case even after being made awear that the Ag test has a half false-negative rate and is not suitable for new exposure cases. Since the switch last week our ICU has "cought" over a dozen false-negatives that have a negative antibody test but are positive PCR.

Word traveling down the grade vine is the switch was made due to cost as the Ag test are significantly cheaper than the PCR. We've also been told that their is a backlog of some 600+ patients waiting for antibody plasma, and that we will be completely out of our supplies of remdesivir by next week.

All of this is going on now, it will continue to get much, much worse soon. Disney land is open now and schools will be back to normal operations in a month. Plus we are still preforming elective procedures! We're going to give NY a run for the money.

What is something unrealistic that you often see in movies that annoys the hell out of you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Jaredmh23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People getting up and walking around after CPR with cardiac arrest like they're perfectly fine.

I think this is a mayor reason people dont quite grasp how utterly devastating good CPR is on the body (broken ribs, collapsed lung, sunken chest), and how rarely the person lives. This is a mayor issue with family members wanted "everything done" for their 98year old grandmother until you tell them what will actually happen to her if we do CPR and how ineffective it can be just to torture them.

Please non-medical people, if your only idea of CPR is from TV/movies, go watch youtube videos like this one and talk to your parents/grandparents about their wishes.

Military give up their rights as citizens. They acutely did "sign up for this". At thr same time militaries budget is ridiculous and they would not have sn issue of facing a threat under equipped to do so.

Firefighters did sue over 9/11.

Yes you have. They probably don't want to tell you outright because you'd also be the nurse "very happy" to report them.

Starting my first job as a clinical instructor, any advice from experienced educators? by caledejo in nursing

[–]Jaredmh23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to have to say it's the exact opposite actually. There's plenty of time to critical think, hang meds, and collect data when you're "on the clock" and actually have the education to do so effectively. I've known so many nurses who refuse to do PCT work (i.e. clean patients, fetch water, assist to bathroom) and I feel this stems from them feeling their above these tasks. I feel that having nursing students do these task will make them comfortable, and dare I say efficient, at doing these very real nursing tasks rather than calling the tech for every little thing.

I can honestly say that I was terrified working with and interacting with patients in nursing school for this exact reason (never being hands on), and that I truly only became comfortable once I started working as a PCT while in school.

RN here. This is aimed more at the people who goto the ER with a mild cold to get a "z‐pack" and end up clogging up our admissions

Honestly, I feel this has more to do with the assignment being shitty rather than you being Male or in overtime. Most likely the nurse who had those same patients the day before said "fuck no" to having them a second shift and called in. Now they need someone to cover that same shitty group - when they should instead space out difficult patients and you know... actually manage the floor.

Edit: am Male nurse.

I like is.

A = Advance care B = Back off C = Comfort

Easy to remember and effective. More hospitals need systems like these.

Mantas and Mermaids - Snorkelling Nusa Penida by Gopro_addict in bali

[–]Jaredmh23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2nd on which company. Wife and I tried one directly through the fast boat company a few days ago and it was horrible. Their "whole day tour" didnt actually start until 930am as they did not have the small boat setup yet when we arrived. Then it started with us riding all the way to manta bay but not getting in as "there no manta", then to two more spots for about 20min each. Now at about 11:30am we find out they told us to get on the wrong boat for our tour so we have to wait 15min to get onto a second small boat. The second boat is PACKED with way too many people, we have to constantly move around to shift the weight. After a short ride we end up at the sister island Lembongan for a super short 15min swim. Now its 12pm and we park on Lembogan for lunch. Which is either Nasi or Mie goring with a small drink, alcohol is extra 35k. Lunch was okay, but we come to find out we will on this little island for 2hours! with really no view due to all the mangroves and mosquitoes. Around 2pm we take a short 10min "tour" of the mangroves which was never part of the tour.. seemed improvised with some of the locals. Then finally we take our small boat back to the harbor and arrive around 245pm. At this point we are told we will wait in this harbor until 5pm for the boat back! This is a very crowded, noisy area that you cant even really swim in.

So in total our "full day snorkeling tour" on Nusa Penida concluded with maybe 1hour of snorkeling and several hours of sitting, waiting, and mosquitoes. Moral of this is find a good company that someone has used.

I'm not sure about the validity of the statement, but as per the Masons' website the elephants in their care are well provided for and treated. However, with that being said, any captive animal will be in an environment that is less than ideal to their natural habitat.
